- Sean Penn, two-time Academy Award winner, the first for MYSTIC RIVER (2003) and the second for his portrayal of UAlbany alum Harvey Milk in MILK (2008), visited the New York State Writers Institute in Albany to discuss his debut novel, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff, the tale of an “odd job man” who kills off the weak and the sick as part of a secret contract with the government. He took questions from the audience.
"Relax alright. My old man is a television repair man, he has this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it"
My brother is gonna shit. He's gonna kill us....
@Kevin Prima Bo Derricks tits!
@@tropicalstormrain5893 so is he gonna shit or is he gonna kill us? First he's gonna shit, then he's gonna kill us!
"Yyyyou can't fix this car, Spicoli!"
"Learning about Cuba...havin' some food..."
I went to High School in Anaheim Calif. from 1980 to 1984, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High was very accurate for high school in southern California at that time!
True story... I met Sean Penn at 1660 N La Salle in Chicago in 1998. He was meeting someone at the building. We talked in the lobby for ten minutes while I waited for my date. Almost 10 years later he walked into my office in NYC and we picked up exactly where we left off. He was a client at my firm for 5Y.
Did you live in Chicago and what did your firm do in NYC if you don't mind me asking
For many fans, he will always be Jeff from "Fast Times."
Are you the pizza guy? Remember? 😂
I can’t look at Sean Penn without thinking of Spicoli 😁
@@coachdebby564 , I can see why. Jeff often had such a stupid look on his face whenever he was outwitted, which was too often the case.
@@nitro_001newman2 , and Jeff never got a single slice of the treat.
I'm shocked he said the movie was "Fluffy". I grew up in the '70's and went to the N.Y.C. public schools and if you take out the surfing I knew every real life person that was portrayed in that movie. Who didn't have a teacher like Mr. Hand? There were no big stars in "Fast Times " but I walked out of the theatre thinking they plucked a real surfer off the street to play Spicoli because Sean Penn only had a small role in "Taps" as did Tom Cruise and unrecognizable . Greatest H.S. movie ever made . I still have the original movie poster
Plot twist: There was no one from his neighborhood who he based the character on, it was just him all along.
im a limousine driver in California. i drove sean Penn when he came to town for an event. he was the nicest guy.
Everyone that went to school in the 80's knows of a Jeff Spicoli in their lives
And the majority of us knew more than one. Heck I was a Jeff Spicoli for short time. lol
If you grew up in Southern California in 1970s beach culture, you knew Jeff Spicoli. If I was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, I would have been one of those guys tumbling out of the VW bus in a haze of weed smoke with him.
@@JohnHoulgate haha, that's funny
I grew up in Northern California, graduated from high school there in 1986 and I can attest to this. I knew several actually.
@@JohnHoulgate I grew up in Canada and went to high school in the 80's and knew a few too. One guy had a Jeep. One day I see him hitching a ride to school. When I asked where the (almost new) Jeep Cherokee was, apparently he was high and went "tree jumping in a forest" and the "Jeep didn't make it" (Insert Spicoli language and dude-laugh here). Same guy was in the local paper for taking a corner at excessive speed and didn't see the car carrier until it was too late. Half a car later, he was in the news. Dude had an epic party that he advertised via flyers. Imagine how many people were there. The list goes on...
Always liked Sean Penn and any character he played but Jeff spicolli is by far my favorite
Sean Penn's best film.
Love that story Sean! Epic 👏
They way he portrayed the character was dead on. I lived in Clairemont in the '70s and this how a lot of the "surfer dudes" talked and acted. I was a surfer, but didn't act, or talk like that, however.
However, YOU DID!
I found this to be such a good find , he has fulfilled a story we were all waiting to hear .
All the different characters In the movie were hilarious and yet Jeff Spicoli stole the show.
Great story! 😂 Loved Spicoli 😃

Thanks for the love, nice comments and unwavering support
Spilling out of the vw van with all the pot smoke before class was so true of the early seventies.
Hotboxing the Van. Lol another classic hotbox seen is in Detroit Rock City when they are going to see kiss in the one dudes mothers car. Lol
He needs to reprise that role. And older Jeff spicoli.
That move is a big part of my youth in high school back in the early 80s. I love it.
Awesome! Totally Awesome!
Sean Penn is an iconic actor/director.Bar none....
I'll bet money that Sean Penn's version of Jeff Spicoli is better than the real guy.
Actually, most of the real life characters are often more extreme than the ones on screen. Look up the real soup nazi from the seinfeld for example.
Nope dude was 😎🌴👽asf
To this day, any time I bump into someone I haven't seen in a long time, the first words out of my mouth are "Ohhh, I know that dude!"
Listening to this guy is very hard he seems like he is in on another planet

The pinnacle of his career.
As an actor - Jeff Spicoli was, to my mind, the best acting he ever did. I've seen him in other things where he did a good job but ... as Jeff - he was great.
.
Considering how young he was...It probably wasn't all acting. But I think he did his best work In at Close Range.
@@johnnyguitar6639 Haven't seen that.
.
@@BobSmith-dk8nw Oh you should. Really a great movie. But it's more a thriller drama
Such a great actor.
One of my faves.
Cool interview.
The famous consultant Tom Peters said that the "A" student, works for the "B" student and the "C" student owns the company. I've talked to many job recruiters, and they said that they favor a 3.5 GPA student more than a 4.0 GPA student because in many cases they have other skills, including social skills that helps professionally. Just see how many Harvard and Yale students work for people that graduated in other countries or came from less famous universities. There was a "Spicoli" in my High School class. He went to college just for one year but today he owns 3 car dealers and make around 2 million dollars a year. His car dealer is famous for the honesty. He never sells a car with a problem. You see lots of honest Spicolis and very dishonest Harvard guys.
I didn't follow his whole one plus three syllables in Italian? What was that all about?
He should’ve started that story with “ Well, Stu. I’ll tell ya. “
Ten bucks it’s one of the guys from the Surf Punks. Years ago, I read an article, part of a book, (?) where Sean and Chris (Penn) grew up in Southern California, on the beach, and it was a phenomenal read! Damn! Wish I could remember where I found it! 🤬
"Make up your mind! Is he gonna shit or is he gonna kill us!" LMAO!!
First he gonna shit, then he gonna kill us
He's going to sh!t, then he's going to kill us.
I would like to see Fast Times 2. Only now, Spicoli would be the Mr. Hand. If I were to ever meet Sean, that's what I would tell him. I think that would be a very funny movie.
Yes, also keep the name.
Mr. Hand must be real then man.
"That was my skull! I'm so WASTED!"
I love your story
That is freakin’ awesome! Well alright Hamilton!
Way to destroy the quote.
Well you know what Mr. moncorp, if I’m here, and your here, isn’t that comment on our time?
Here...let me undestroy it. Spicoli: "Awesome! Totally awesome! Alright Hamilton!"
👍
He looks better with long hair
My alma mater for grad school!
I love that movie
Great story!
I met Sean Penn a lil over a year ago. Cool dude.
And now you can say you know that dude
"Make up your mind, Dude! Is he gonna shit, or is he gonna kill us?"
Everyone knew a Spicolli growing up. If you didn't then you were the Spicolli.
I'd ask him what he thought of Mark "Cutback" Davis and Bob "Jungle Death" Gerard?
Awesome totally Awesome 🤙🏻
This is hilarious!

Good stuff loved the movie and the character was great
As a bus driver for 35 years you never know
Awesome story
Hey, are you in my class? I am today.
Someone should get sean Penn to make a movie based sequel to fast times called spicoli
So cool
You still laugh like Spicoli 😂😂😂
Did he regret never having a scene with Phoebe Cates in the movie?
ay spicoli that light was rayedddd, it was yellow uhminute ago.
Can’t stand the dude but by FAR his best role.
All I need is a cool buzz and some tasty waves and I'm fine

My high school van nuys
did Sean Penn even tell 'the guy' that Spicoli was based on him??
He made that up
Penn < Spicoli
Damone made that movie.
So did he lie here or on Conan? I guess a story is a story and can be placed anywhere in time.
its two weeks ago in this interview and in the conans interview think sean is lying
Aloha
I think Sean Penn is morphing into Gene Hackman these days
Sean Penn totally ripped off the Jeff Spicoli character from real life guy Richard LaVon Griffiths. Check out the movie The Beaver Trilogy, directed by Trent Harris, featuring Richard LaVon Griffiths. It's such a blatant ripoff
I was number #420 for likes...aloha jeff
Nowadays Sean is even more confused than Spicoli ever was. I wonder why that is.
He sounds like a 90-year-old man telling a long, drawn-out, uninteresting old man story. I mean, after all that build-up... you ran into the guy you once based a character on?
The superficial venezuelan outstandingly shelter because hamster unknowingly spare amongst a obsequious credit. boring, nonstop chain
Penn is a terrible story teller
Dude, Vans wouldn’t be the company it is partly in due to FTRH 🤘🏼
There is absolutely nothing more nostalgic than watching that classic movie. I miss the early 80s
I miss the whole decade.
Great story

so nice that he is still happy to talk about Spicoli and the Fast times days.
You mean finally happy to talk about him. For decades he wouldn't talk about him.
@@moncorp1 ikr? ..... I was gonna say, for a long time, he'd be a real ... well .... dick! .... when asked about that movie ....

I want to go up to him and say “I know that dude”😂😂

He looks better with long hsir
I walked by him (Penn) once in west LA as he stood / leaned by his classic 80’s Buick (might have been an Olds) muscle car and said, “nice car dude”. He glared at me as if he wanted to punch me. What a dick I said to myself. Said the same thing to Kevin Costner at Warner brothers in Burbank about his green mustang from the bull durham film and he at least smiled at me. Penn was obviously being nice in this interview to promote a film.
@@UnitedSoundVideo A 1980s car isn't a classic car. Could be classified as a collectable car/hot rod or just a old nice vintage car. A "Antique" car is generally a car or anything 100 years old or older. 1980s car is just a old car. If it's a GN or GNX something like that then ya newer term "Muscle car" can be applyed.
That dude has been stoned since the 3rd grade.
All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine...
Great story...I graduated high school a few years before the "Fast Times" class would have...But it was a very similar party hard and fast, rock and roll atmosphere. And I've seen that: guys who were total wastoids went on to become Chamber of Commerce icons and school superintendents...
Our teen age years does not define the rest of our adult life, people through out the years and experiences change. It was funny how the school system back then labeled students as failures by their wacky attitudes and low academic performance, I did heard the phrase "you will fail in life with that attitude" many times on guys and girls whom today have a good living, the 70's and 80's were transitional decades from the old school conservative system to the more chill, cool and tolerant ambience that hit the 90's to our days.
He looks better with long hair
Lol..BS
There is a real life Jeff Spicoli. My god....come forward sir.
He's still waiting on a food line with a full crowd scene
They're everywhere where I live on the California coast. Everywhere!
Here he is. ua-cam.com/video/hJdF8DJ70Dc/v-deo.html
Spicoli is an Iconic character and Penn nailed the part. I’ve heard he gets pissed whenever people mention Spicoli and has gotten mean in years past with fans.. not sure why - it’s what made him and he’s never topped it in his acting career imo
While that was a great answer, I still wanted to know what it was like behind the scenes of the movie.
On the totally awesome edition of the DVD that came out,Jennifer Jason Leigh and Phoebe Cates both talked about him being rude and not hardly talking to them on set.
@@curtissmith7297 ~ Penn is a notorious prick. He wouldn't even acknowledge or talk about Spicoli or Fast Times for many, many years. He thought he was better than that stoner character he once played. He's only recently started to somewhat soften up his stance on it. I say somewhat because you can tell he still doesn't really want to talk about it much.
@@curtissmith7297 He was around some major eye candy on set, I would give my left nut to be there.
I was teaching a class to some transitioning Army pilots just last week and one of the studs was late to show. I immediately found the Mr Hand “why do you shamelessly waste my time” video on UA-cam and played it when our late student finally showed. Good times!
That's awesome.
What were the pilots transitioning to if you don't mind me asking.
Glad he is finally embracing this movie. I mean all of us don't really remember Sgt. Tony Meserve or Harvey Milk. But everyone knows Spicolli!
Finally? WTF is WRONG with you
He went for decades without wanting to talk about Spicolli. Chill, man.@@BAKER22-l4u
@@BAKER22-l4uI think the op is right. I don't think he really was that proud of fast times
One of my favourite characters ever 😎
This is one of those rare times when you see Sean Penn actually acting civil
WTF is WRONG with you? You obviously need serious counseling
The shocking thing to me and the first time I realized Penn was a great actor, was someone told me that the stoner from Fast Times was in the military school movie Taps…. Blew me away it was the same kid.
Next talk: 'Fast Times In Venezuela."
Pope Toby that’s fucked up😂
@@mayfieldgage why is Toby effed up?, s. penn is a leftist prick
I graduated high school in 1984, I vividly remember seeing that movie when it first came out. Everyone loved Spicoli, he made the movie what it was.
But no Best Supporting Actor win (or even nomination!) for Spicoli in "Fast Times"?! Dude, that's not right!
Please. The Academy Awards will never give out Oscars for comedy movies especially teenage, raunchy, nudity filled comedies. I think the closest they have ever gotten was giving Robert Downey Jr a best supporting actor nomination for Tropic Thunder.
@@cgh7337 Now they give them out for comic book heroes and ethnicity
he hates being asked about that movie, and i love when hes asked about it
He's such a prick.
He is ashamed. And probably scared. He really is a prick.
He did say that the moderator picked the right time to ask. And he is a great actor..not just good. Grew up in Hollywood, so no surprise that he's a prima donna. Comes with the gig..for some folks.
@@garyspence2128 his brother grew up in hollywood and wasnt a prima donna though. wasnt as good of a actor but shame he died. he had the better personality
