We're still planning on doing a NEW resin pumpkin this fall so make sure you're subbed 😘 ALSO thank you Nigel for being our science expert! ua-cam.com/users/nilered
Said it before: when things rot, the bacteria eating the organic material releases gasses, which are pushing the resin, and now the mineral oil, out of Chunk 2's prison. The Pumpkin that flash cured might be staying pristine because the heat killed all the bacteria. High temperatures are used to sanitize medical equipment.
Hm. I wonder if you leave a lil opening on the top for the gasses to escape on their own, would Chunk 2 still leak? The problem with that is letting him rot. Though, it may not be by much, since he is in resin
i thhiught the same thing!! but the ending implies the continuous bubbles might be because of the leak! it was just too small to notice until they left it for 10 days
@@Rosie-yt8nd the leak was due to the two thread taps they added i think, but the pumpkin was rotting and producing gas before that since it was buldging
So I have a thought. I know flower dessicants exist to kind of preserve flowers, and I've heard about the water molecules being replaced by silicone can also add a flexibility and preservation to stuff like coral. I imagine a pumpkin has way too much water content for something like that, but at this stage, could heating the resin and adding a desiccant or silicone help?
I love that nigel is like "you could do it with salt water and a bit of germicide" and they went "well we found this chemical on amazon for cheap" and he was like "oh dip, go for it"
Right? And then they used their preservative briefly before getting rid of that too in favor of mineral oil, which is doing nothing to kill the bacteria or mold that it causing the issue
@kevinwells9751 I'm pretty sure they made a 1% solution woth both water and then mineral oil. Problem is I don't think that germicide is diffusing through the flesh of the pumpkin
I don't think logic is their strong suit, considering how much chemistry/physics/biology is going over their heads in this video haha. Personal favourite was them being completely dumbfounded by their accidental siphon that was pulling air into the open end
out of those two, Chunk 1 is still my favourite. He might not be encased in a perfect cube like Chunk 2, but he looks like he is trapped in an ice cube. I think that's pretty cool

Hey guys! I have some info that might help with the next pumpkin: My dad is a wood worker, specifically he likes turning bowls on a lathe or making pens. Sometimes he uses wood that is partially rotten. Rotten wood, of course, is soft and falls apart, making it unsuitable for turning. He solves this by putting the wood in a vacuum chamber full of a certain resin. Over time in the chamber, the air is sucked out and the voids left behind are replaced by resin, preserving the shape while making it stronger. Someone else uses this technique with vinegar and cucumbers to essentially make instant pickles. This might be a good solution to allow you to fill the pumpkin with some sort of preservative before encasing it.
You could also steam the pumpkin for a couple hours at like 120C/250F. If this heat can penetrate the entire pumpkin for 15 minutes it will sterilize it. Unsure what this would do to the pumpkin's structure. An acidic environment would also work, but also would probably destroy the colour. The other thing that can stop anaerobic bacterial growth is an extremely high concentration sugar solution. I think this is a good bet if you want to pump a liquid into the resin like this video after the fact. There are clear sugar syrups that you should be able to pump in and I do not think sugar will react with the pumpkins structure.
That's definitely gonna shrivel the pumpkin. You'd be putting several times earth's atmosphere from every angle pushing in on the pumpkin. Unless you can somehow replace the cavitations left behind with resin.
My guess is Chunk 1 is fine because of the rapid cure. It sorta pasteurized the pumpkin with the rapid heat meaning there's nothing to decompose it in the resin.
Nigel should create a new channel called NilePurple where he offers his chemistry knowledge to people who are doing unhinged things since this interview falls in-between his seriousness on Nile red and his unhinged behavior on Nile blue

I genuinely love the look of Chunk (1s) resin block, it looks like he's trapped in ice! Which makes it a very fun decoration, with environmental story telling

Hey I know this is random, but you should really unstring that bow at the end of the video in the closet. Depending how long it's been like that, it might be unusable now. Bows lose their strength when strung in storage for too long. They should only be strung while in active use. Hope that helps!

ahhhhh this is the earliest I've ever been to a youtube video! Love you guy's content and it's been so inspiring for me to do DIY stuff for myself!😁
The collab we never knew we needed.
So true
Honestly, Nilered being like "Well most chemicals are pretty eh" is so real. If you work with chemicals like that often, you do kinda get that attitude where you aren't really scared of them as long as you know you have taken the proper precautions.
Hey I know this is random, but you should really unstring that bow at the end of the video in the closet. Depending how long it's been like that, it might be unusable now. Bows lose their strength when strung in storage for too long. They should only be strung while in active use. Hope that helps!
the look she gives the camera at 6:35 is just "my husband is so silly i love him so much" and i'm here for it
Yeah that's a relationship gone right.
OMG! I LOVE THAT YOU GUYS COLLAB'D WITH NILERED!!!!!
Yes! Another pumpkin vid ❤
This crossover feels like the time Jimmy Neutron and Fairly Odd Parents had that trilogy
So excited to see this saga continue!
i was just thinking about the pumpkins and was excitedly waiting for october
never in my life would i assume your next colab would be with nile red
I love that Chunk 1 looks like she's trapped in an ice cube.
Just the collab i wanted to see, omg
Oh my gosh this is the best series ever
Me and my cat (Boots) love to watch you videos to unwind for the night ❤
I just whached all of the pumpkin videos and then this dropped out 😆
