the homeless doll was always interesting to me since I think they were trying to bring up the topic of foster care, orphanage and people around that time struggling to get to life which is an important topic but of course parents want to hush money to that.
Studying this video so I can be like “I KNOW MORE ABOUT AMERICAN GIRL DOLLS THAN YOU, GENIUS”
is this a reference to that vine with the little girl at the AG store?
the dolls can get cataracts 💀
Though I grew up low income, I was still obsessed with american girls and would read the catalogue front to back constantly dreaming of getting one. I finally did in 2006 when I got Jess, the then girl of the year. I also remember the opening with the american girl store was accompanied by a pbs kids arthur episode about a parody of them. it was pretty fun
WOAH I'm pretty sure my first American girl doll, bought for me in 2001, is one of the greycast frizzy defect dolls. I had never heard of that being a thing until this video, but I always wondered why her skin looked so dull and greyish and her hair was so frizzy so early on in my owning her even I took obsessively good care of her. Who would've thought! Anyway, this video brought up so many deep dark memories from my childhood, well done! Keep up the awesome content!
This was the first AG iceberg video I ever seen. Thank you for posting!
I never got to have an American Girl doll growing up, because we couldn't afford it. However, as my name is Kirsten, several people got me books of the Kirsten book series. I found it funny that we shared the same name and that we both lived in Minnesota at some point. Now if Kirsten would be considered autistic, then that's another thing we would have in common 😅🤣
Yeah I felt the same way when McKenna was released. I couldn't have her but made her my entire personality since we had the same name😂
@kirstenhartman555 did you ever get a chance to purchase a Kirsten doll for yourself?
I think Kirsten meeting Singing Bird again is referencing one of Kirsten's short stories, Kirsten on the Trail, where Singing Bird's tribe returns.
I was never into American girl dolls, didn’t even know it was such a big thing till HS when I was too old for them. Good video!
American Girl was my first ever doll obsession, I can’t imagine how many hours my sister and I poured over the catalogues. Now that I’m an actual serious doll collector I wish I had more because I always loved the characters, but of course they’re some of the most expensive dolls out there, and the fans are a whole new level of toxic. Guess they saw “American” in the title and assumed it was permission to act entitled. (I’m American too, I apologize on behalf of… every fan community I’m in.)
I just read up on the homeless doll and totally resonated with her after spending 3 months of the summer homeless in my car myself, while i saved up money to get an apartment for the winter 😭 her situation is so much more common than people realize and I was honestly touched that they thought to include a story line like that
Never heard Marie Grace as Grandmary.
But it's a good theory. Her last name is Gardner and it was a very 19th century fashion to name children after their maiden name.
Uncle Gardner
I dont know if this was intentional but it's a good theory
I never had the American Girl Dolls growing up but I think I remember specifically of my grandmother having the porcelain doll versions of I believe Molly who is one of the historical ones. I also remember collecting a lot of the books reading them over the summer during the summer reading program that my local library would hold every year. My mom would also buy the books from garage sales.
I watched through this whole video, and WOW! I never seen a iceburg video about AG, and this video was very infromative and well researched. I am not a very avid collector towards American Girl and didn't know that much about it so I didn't realize how much lore was towards this brand! It shows how much time and patience with this video, beautiful job, you're so criminally underated!
Great video and it so true about the scalpers that rip people off those dolls are still on eBay for 200 to 700 that’s insane
@@CraftyMagicDollzyikes it’s good that you don’t regret it but I would not spend that much on an American girl doll. Original 6 is pretty though.
Dude, hearing about the bubble eye issue explains so much. The only AG doll I had as a kid was a Bitty Baby, and I hated that thing. One of it's eyes had that bubble defect. It instilled a Tell-Tale-Heart level of fear and paranoia in me. Nightmares. Seeing the defect progress over time made me believe I was witnessing a genuine curse in action.
Elizabeth's hair color changing to match the actress doesn't make sense. Annasophia Robb is blonde and wore a wig to play Samantha. They would have just put a wig on Kate Henney.
That’s what they should have done but that makes too much sense apparently lol
I always thought it was also to differenciate her from Felicity a bit more.
Yes but also Samantha had been around for a while so changing he hair color would be confusing but I do agree that they should have given Katie Henney a wig.
just imagine pleasant fkn rowland being your landlady
I kind of wanted the american girl tablet but I thought I was too old for it ❤
i think it says something that it was bad enough that nearly completely oblivious eight year old me could see and question why a majority of american girl dolls were blonde and white and not literally anything else
The Bitty Baby Bears were everything and I loved the little books that came with them.
interesting iceberg! hope your channel flourishes beautifully!
This is amazing! I’ve been waiting for someone to cover a ag iceberg. Great video!!🤍
I've been hoping for a video like this for a while, then I see this in my recommended, thank you so much! Great job.
Great video and very well researched. I have a few AG dolls and they are of the older PC productions. When I watch older and newer doll comparisons videos. Wow what a difference. The newer are smaller and skinnier. New clothes do not fit older dolls nicely. Some are comparing AG with Barbie as becoming cheaper quality with poorer quality control in manufacturing and too much pink!
2017 was a flop for the company
This is amazing! So much effort into this one video! I feel so educated thank you so much! I hate that they don’t keep all their historical dolls available constantly. I understand why girl of the year dolls aren’t available. When I was old enough to get an AG doll they had discontinued Samantha for the time being. It made me so sad as she was my favorite.
i made one of these a few years ago and scrapped it! i’m so glad one is finally up! you did a great job❤
So when I was 8th grade my civics teacher used an game on the American girl website based around Addy to teach us a bit about the Underground Railroad.
Totally love this video! So informative, thank you
One thing I noticed that was left out of the iceberg and honorable mentions was the Amazon Prime Video American Girl movies. They weren’t really movies, more like special features. (about 45 minutes in length)
I grew up watching these movies over and over again, and from what I remember, there were several about the dolls Maryellen, Melody, and Julie and Ivy. There was also a summer camp type movie about these three characters using science to discover some camp mystery. One of the three was Z, who I’m assuming is the same Z from the contemporary line as they shared many noticeable similarities, as well as the fact that the movie came out around the same time that Z did, however nothing was confirmed.
I really expected this to be on the list, and I thought it was popular enough, but maybe not. Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers this!
Wow I’m super impressed! I thought I knew all the things but you had some nuggets of information that I’d never heard before 😅Thank you!
Good video! I’m not all that into American Girl Dolls but I still watched and found it interesting! I would change or quiet down the music at some points though for future videos - it got really distracting
Came to say the same thing, the music was distracting but the video information is good.
The music issue is definitely something I'm going to try to fix going forward. It seems like it's always too loud or too quiet in my videos lol.
@@bubbleteaproductions15 too quiet is always preferable. But that having been said i thoroughly enjoyed your video.
Ohmygosh I LOVED the DS games!! I spent to many hours playing them lol
I remember most enjoying meeting all tje characters from the books!
I also finally found the History Mystery line!! I have sone that are focused on Molly and I remember reading the Prairie Bride book & it took me forever to to find it, because I remembered the main characters name! Thank you so much for this video! While watching, I definitely felt so much nostalgia because American Girl was a central part of my childhood
Wow, I didn’t realize the Cecile was so rare. I have her doll but if I tried to sell her, it would only be for a little bit because her hair is all messed up and stuff.
fun fact the American girl music videos play in store, last time I went was 2022 so i cent say if theyre still playing now but they were recently
...so the WellieWishers can have Alexandria's Genesis? 😁
(great video by the way - as someone only vaguely into American Girl, it's awesome getting to learn all of these facts about the brand that I never knew before)
This is great ❤ really enjoyed it I am a new subscriber now ❤
If you added the history mysteries, this would have been perfect. Also maybe going ahead, you can omit the parts you had no info on completely instead of including to say you didn’t find anything on it. The rest of the video was very informative though, looking forward to seeing your future uploads
1, one million moms sucks lol
2, what exactly is different about the Tenney prototype? I don't see it. And if you accidentally put a picture of the official doll on here, do you know where I can find the picture of the prototype?
3, I love American Girl!
I miss American Girl movies so much! 🍿😢 They were so good and underrated.
I always found the American Girl teeth so creepy lol. They definitely look way better with closed mouths.
I loved the magazines and puberty books when I was little.
I had a couple American girl dolls growing up. I dont understand why my parents acted like build a bear was so much money, yet AG dolls were fine. Lol. I didn't care much for the books because I didnt like reading as a kid, but I had a few of the movies and loved them
slsksjgksl i LOVED innerstar u as a kid. i would spend literally hours trying to beat the horse minigame. to this day i’m still mad they got rid of it :(
Hello, I am a huge fan of your channel! Thank you for all of the insight into the world of American Girl! I would love to see you do an in-depth, chronological history about the American Girl brand as a whole including all the dolls ever made/almost made, outfits, furniture, all similar line products, etc.
I am also curious to where you find all of this detailed information regarding the American Girl brand and similar brands.
Also another honorable mentions: 1) Rosanna Pansino got her own American Girl doll. Do you know of anyone else who has gotten their own doll? I always wonder about this.
2) The GOTY Mia had a prototype. I would love to see a chronological slideshow of all the prototypes from American Girl.
You did a lot of research! Thank you!
OMG! Thank you so much for all the research ❤. This video was totally fascinating. I love all of the history and about the creator’s economic decisions that affected a whole town. This truly is an American story with all of its hopes, inspirations and its warts- including greed . A documentary would be so good.
Hey there please boost your audio quality, I really was interested in the topic!
hopscotch hill scare me tbh
The only thing I wanted to know is if Felicity married Ben.
Haha, this is so funny!! I know it was 6th months ago, but that's an interesting idea!
Ironic that this video says 13+ when you aren't even supposed to be on youtube if you're under 13
With UA-cam’s policies about what’s considered “made for kids” and COPPA/UA-cam kids situation I put that there just to be safe lol. Although of all my videos this is probably the one that could be considered for kids the least 😂
This is a great video. I only have a few American girls because I live in Scotland and it’s so expensive to ship but I love them!
This is a cool video I remember I wanted these as a kid but there so expensive but I love the American girl shopping magazine.😅
24:55 OMG!!! I used to have all the pins!! SO MANY! like probably 50 of them, all on a tapestry in my room! I didn’t even know they were from AG😂😂 I collected them from thrift stores and yard sales!! I wish I kept them, but not really, since I don’t collect pins anymore, but dang, such fun times!
Edit: idk WHY I didn’t know it was AG. I literally owned THAT tapestry!!! 😂 it says American Girl on it LMAO
cool video!
This is a video covering a great topic, but I couldn't make it 3 mins in bc the music sounded freaky as hell 😅 I usually like to fall asleep to videos like these but this one very much did the opposite. If you were to repost without that particular music being that loud, I'd love to give the whole thing a listen 💕
Not into AG the way I was as a kid, but this video was very nostalgic and interesting.
Oh my gosh that silver eye thing used to scare me when I was like 9 lmao
Pleasant Rowland evil landlord character arc is maybe my biggest heart break?? But alas, what else could I expect.
Originally bitty twins were availed in blonde or brown hair but the girls had shorter hair
6:56 where can I found the American girl Boy Dolls with the yellow green headphones and red jacket. I would like to buy all 4 boys for my set
this video SLAPS and i love your additions at the end. can attest: agig discourse was insane. at one point i was like, a 13 year old projecting my internalized homophobic insecurities on the internet. through agig discourse. thank god i am chill now and all my dolls are gay and trans like me 👍
the likes on that dolliedreaming post actually made me so sad watching this, sucked to find out doll accounts i used to like support gross transphobic stuff
Good video
I don’t see the difference with tenny protype and the actual tenny doll!? Unless it is the very small details.
It's mainly the freckles and lip paint that are slightly different but it's hard to tell unless they're next to each other. I think the prototype might also have the older, chubbier classic mold but I'm not sure.
It's definitely easier to see on the post I found the prototype on in-pleasant-company.tumblr.com/post/637499241112256512
can u repost this without music? i wanna watch but it is hard to understand
A few of my old dolls have sliver eyes ❤
I still have my AG doll and a Bitty Baby too, they’re adorable 🥰.
I was SO disappointed when I found out the magazine had been discontinued! 😭
About the Felicity doll possibly having ADHD, the reasons listed for why she *might* have ADHD are pretty stereotypical, to put it very bluntly. Coincidentally, I actually owned the Felicity doll and read her books when I was younger (as we had the same first name!) and I have ADHD and am autistic. While it may be possible that she could have ADHD, the reasons you (or really, the general fandom) give for her having the condition are a pretty stereotypical portrayal of people with ADHD- that is- hyperactive, fidgety, and incapable of completing tasks. While those are true to some degree, every person with ADHD is different and ADHD is much more than just being hyperactive or "lazy". I understand the intent of the speculation probably doesn't come from a place of deliberate insensitivity, but I seriously wish neurotypical people would stop labeling fictional characters (or sometimes real people) as having ADHD or other similar conditions without really understanding what the condition means or bothering to actually talk to or understand neurodivergent people. Especially because this kind of behavior and way of thinking continues to stereotype people who ACTUALLY have ADHD and leaves a lot of people, especially girls, miss or under-diagnosed because of the narrow perception of what the condition is always "supposed" to look like. If American Girl wants to make or write about a neurodivergent doll, whether they be autistic, dyslexic, ADHD or something else, I would prefer they outright state that the doll is neurodivergent instead of hiding it behind vague behaviors, symptoms, or suggestions from other characters.
The only American girl thing i had was the Josefina pop up book with paper dolls
WOAH This made me remember my doll I had when I was younger ..
I REMEMBER THE AG UNIVERSITY GAME
I only got to play it twice before losing my doll lol
Hi! I actually live in the uae, while I haven’t been to the store there in a long time, I think since luciana was girl of the year I’d love to answer any questions people have
this is kinda unrelated but I remember in 2017 I had wanted gabriela, and my mom hadn't gotten it for me just because of her skin color, which is really stupid. it's a doll. I got tenney instead.
Watch this video flop 💀
It's alright, my other channel is still a pretty small channel. I've gotten 1k views at most. Be proud of your hard work. I really liked this video. 💓
i remember the gay dads in the magazine, i just thought it was wholesome😭
coming from a girl born in 1980 .. i love the music videos that AG did
that’s what videos looked like way before everything became fake
9:57 lucky me found Caroline for $25 at a savers
i never had one they freaked me out 😭
At least I know the weird puppet like doll i have isn't a knock off
I have a Luciana doll
I have an original Caroline and Mary grace 😳
I loved interstar u ❤
I don't know how much puberty has changed in the last few years. As far as I am convinced it hasn't changed for thousands of years.
I feel the same when schools keep updating their math books. Honestly, math doesn't change. There is no reason to keep changing the books. All I know is we used to be able to do more math on paper and in our heads. So not sure the updated books are an improvement.
The ag dolls are so cheaply made now
I can explain the white dolls. I worked at Toys R Us for years, including when they sold American Girl dolls. The city the store was in was mostly black, then white, then Latin. We had all races of dolls including Gabriella. Well, the white dolls were always selling. You rarely saw anyone buy a black, Latin, or Asian doll. Wellie Wishers, same thing. Willa and Camille sold the best. Easily. It didn't matter who was buying the doll. White dolls always sold better. We constantly having to refill the white dolls (the extra dolls were kept in bays behind the American Girl section; I used to have to stock that section overnight at Christmas). Mattel gets flack for this, but in reality, white dolls sell better. Mattel has to make money. Period. The other issue is that it's easier to make a unique looking white doll really easily. That's because white people have more phenotypes due to melanin variations. This is hard truth people don't want to face up to. Doll face molds are what they are. Mattel can only really do so many combinations with black, Asian, and Latina dolls. They should work on a new Latina face mold (my opinion) and bring back #4. I would also use a darker skin tone on a Corinne mold, but that mold is so new, they haven't had a chance to work with it much. I think they should do more mixed race dolls in Truly Me, but the problem with that is that some ignorant people online start whining that it's "cultural appropriation of hair" when you put a more African hair texture on a lighter skin doll without giving a character. Mixed race kids exist. Evette was so close to the mixed race doll I was picturing, except the eye color (I wanted hazel). I was shocked. They did the hair type I wanted to see, the skin tone, and the freckles. I couldn't believe it. Still, I made a mixed race doll in CYO and bought her. With hazel eyes and long natural brown wig, medium skin, Sonali mold, and freckles.
Anyway, you can more combinations with white dolls. It's really easy. Mattel loves easy. They also just outsell. That really helps motivate them.
If people want more non-white dolls, you have to buy them. Close to 1/3rd of my collection are non-white dolls. Exactly one third of my CYOs are not white. Buy Kavi. Show them you want this, people. I bought Kavi in spite of her ugly meet outfit.
Hi
