the homeless doll was always interesting to me since I think they were trying to bring up the topic of foster care, orphanage and people around that time struggling to get to life which is an important topic but of course parents want to hush money to that.

Though I grew up low income, I was still obsessed with american girls and would read the catalogue front to back constantly dreaming of getting one. I finally did in 2006 when I got Jess, the then girl of the year. I also remember the opening with the american girl store was accompanied by a pbs kids arthur episode about a parody of them. it was pretty fun

WOAH I'm pretty sure my first American girl doll, bought for me in 2001, is one of the greycast frizzy defect dolls. I had never heard of that being a thing until this video, but I always wondered why her skin looked so dull and greyish and her hair was so frizzy so early on in my owning her even I took obsessively good care of her. Who would've thought! Anyway, this video brought up so many deep dark memories from my childhood, well done! Keep up the awesome content!

I never got to have an American Girl doll growing up, because we couldn't afford it. However, as my name is Kirsten, several people got me books of the Kirsten book series. I found it funny that we shared the same name and that we both lived in Minnesota at some point. Now if Kirsten would be considered autistic, then that's another thing we would have in common 😅🤣

American Girl was my first ever doll obsession, I can’t imagine how many hours my sister and I poured over the catalogues. Now that I’m an actual serious doll collector I wish I had more because I always loved the characters, but of course they’re some of the most expensive dolls out there, and the fans are a whole new level of toxic. Guess they saw “American” in the title and assumed it was permission to act entitled. (I’m American too, I apologize on behalf of… every fan community I’m in.)

I just read up on the homeless doll and totally resonated with her after spending 3 months of the summer homeless in my car myself, while i saved up money to get an apartment for the winter 😭 her situation is so much more common than people realize and I was honestly touched that they thought to include a story line like that

Never heard Marie Grace as Grandmary.
But it's a good theory. Her last name is Gardner and it was a very 19th century fashion to name children after their maiden name.

I never had the American Girl Dolls growing up but I think I remember specifically of my grandmother having the porcelain doll versions of I believe Molly who is one of the historical ones. I also remember collecting a lot of the books reading them over the summer during the summer reading program that my local library would hold every year. My mom would also buy the books from garage sales.

Dude, hearing about the bubble eye issue explains so much. The only AG doll I had as a kid was a Bitty Baby, and I hated that thing. One of it's eyes had that bubble defect. It instilled a Tell-Tale-Heart level of fear and paranoia in me. Nightmares. Seeing the defect progress over time made me believe I was witnessing a genuine curse in action.

Great video and very well researched. I have a few AG dolls and they are of the older PC productions. When I watch older and newer doll comparisons videos. Wow what a difference. The newer are smaller and skinnier. New clothes do not fit older dolls nicely. Some are comparing AG with Barbie as becoming cheaper quality with poorer quality control in manufacturing and too much pink!

One thing I noticed that was left out of the iceberg and honorable mentions was the Amazon Prime Video American Girl movies. They weren’t really movies, more like special features. (about 45 minutes in length)
I grew up watching these movies over and over again, and from what I remember, there were several about the dolls Maryellen, Melody, and Julie and Ivy. There was also a summer camp type movie about these three characters using science to discover some camp mystery. One of the three was Z, who I’m assuming is the same Z from the contemporary line as they shared many noticeable similarities, as well as the fact that the movie came out around the same time that Z did, however nothing was confirmed.
I really expected this to be on the list, and I thought it was popular enough, but maybe not. Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers this!

About the Felicity doll possibly having ADHD, the reasons listed for why she *might* have ADHD are pretty stereotypical, to put it very bluntly. Coincidentally, I actually owned the Felicity doll and read her books when I was younger (as we had the same first name!) and I have ADHD and am autistic. While it may be possible that she could have ADHD, the reasons you (or really, the general fandom) give for her having the condition are a pretty stereotypical portrayal of people with ADHD- that is- hyperactive, fidgety, and incapable of completing tasks. While those are true to some degree, every person with ADHD is different and ADHD is much more than just being hyperactive or "lazy". I understand the intent of the speculation probably doesn't come from a place of deliberate insensitivity, but I seriously wish neurotypical people would stop labeling fictional characters (or sometimes real people) as having ADHD or other similar conditions without really understanding what the condition means or bothering to actually talk to or understand neurodivergent people. Especially because this kind of behavior and way of thinking continues to stereotype people who ACTUALLY have ADHD and leaves a lot of people, especially girls, miss or under-diagnosed because of the narrow perception of what the condition is always "supposed" to look like. If American Girl wants to make or write about a neurodivergent doll, whether they be autistic, dyslexic, ADHD or something else, I would prefer they outright state that the doll is neurodivergent instead of hiding it behind vague behaviors, symptoms, or suggestions from other characters.

I don't know how much puberty has changed in the last few years. As far as I am convinced it hasn't changed for thousands of years.
I feel the same when schools keep updating their math books. Honestly, math doesn't change. There is no reason to keep changing the books. All I know is we used to be able to do more math on paper and in our heads. So not sure the updated books are an improvement.

I can explain the white dolls. I worked at Toys R Us for years, including when they sold American Girl dolls. The city the store was in was mostly black, then white, then Latin. We had all races of dolls including Gabriella. Well, the white dolls were always selling. You rarely saw anyone buy a black, Latin, or Asian doll. Wellie Wishers, same thing. Willa and Camille sold the best. Easily. It didn't matter who was buying the doll. White dolls always sold better. We constantly having to refill the white dolls (the extra dolls were kept in bays behind the American Girl section; I used to have to stock that section overnight at Christmas). Mattel gets flack for this, but in reality, white dolls sell better. Mattel has to make money. Period. The other issue is that it's easier to make a unique looking white doll really easily. That's because white people have more phenotypes due to melanin variations. This is hard truth people don't want to face up to. Doll face molds are what they are. Mattel can only really do so many combinations with black, Asian, and Latina dolls. They should work on a new Latina face mold (my opinion) and bring back #4. I would also use a darker skin tone on a Corinne mold, but that mold is so new, they haven't had a chance to work with it much. I think they should do more mixed race dolls in Truly Me, but the problem with that is that some ignorant people online start whining that it's "cultural appropriation of hair" when you put a more African hair texture on a lighter skin doll without giving a character. Mixed race kids exist. Evette was so close to the mixed race doll I was picturing, except the eye color (I wanted hazel). I was shocked. They did the hair type I wanted to see, the skin tone, and the freckles. I couldn't believe it. Still, I made a mixed race doll in CYO and bought her. With hazel eyes and long natural brown wig, medium skin, Sonali mold, and freckles.
Anyway, you can more combinations with white dolls. It's really easy. Mattel loves easy. They also just outsell. That really helps motivate them.
If people want more non-white dolls, you have to buy them. Close to 1/3rd of my collection are non-white dolls. Exactly one third of my CYOs are not white. Buy Kavi. Show them you want this, people. I bought Kavi in spite of her ugly meet outfit.
