This world is full of believers whose voices are not being heard because they do not fit into mainstream Christian culture. Therefore, the emergence of the spiritual underground, which is buzzing with new life and innovation as a random network of misfits find each other, and a much needed place of safety.
These past few years, Common Hymnal has served as a connecting point for this community, and, in the process, stumbled across some beautiful songs. A key thread: worship with a social conscience. Recently, we gathered songwriters from the network for a House Show recording so that we could start sharing these gems and telling this story.

An online church service used this song so appropriately this morning & I’d never heard it. Searched and found this as its beautiful source. Thank you, thank you for a song of hope after such a soul-crushing week. This is the first true peace I have felt all week.
I came across this music on my UA-cam am gonna listen more of this songs they open my spiritual eyes.
I heard Jamie MacDonald's Higher I Will Go in a movie recently and have been trying to find out more about her music and stumbled on this beautiful video. She truly has an anointed voice all by herself but this song is beautiful indeed and I will check this group's music out also.

I like the effort to do worship from the margins but unfortunately this song’s lyrics still reify notions of patriarchal and imperial reign via notions of ‘kingdom’ and an abusive male ‘lord’ (e.g. the lord of the manor ruling over serfs and creating the working-class medieval White European trauma that later got blown through Black and Brown bodies in the later-formed United States; see Resmaa Menakem’s My Grandmother’s Hands). Would love to see music using mujerista theologian Ada María Isasí Díaz’s concept of the kin-dom, and perhaps replacing ‘lord’ with ‘guru,’ ‘mentor,’ ‘sage,’ or something more relational.

Mainstream CCM just doesn't do it for me anymore. I love to worship, but I resonate less and less with their songs. This song brought tears to my eyes for the first time in a while. You have gained a follower for your project!

DanielandMarie Walter I’ve really only been listening to Common Hymnal and Lauren Daigle. The song “God Is” by The Outer Banks and a few others by them are also amazing.

I'm going to share this with my youth group tonight. We've been studying through the Sermon on the Mount for several weeks now and we're studying the end of Matthew 5 this evening. We've been blessed to see how time after time Jesus points us back to the beginning of His sermon where we learn that blessing begins when we realize our poverty of spirit and truly see our need for Him. Your song is a beautiful reminder of much of what we've learned over the past couple of months. Looking forward to more in the coming weeks and months.
