Hi David, The amazing thing about day trading is that you can literally do it from anywhere as long as you have a decent internet connection. I hope you reach your goal!
How's the trading working out for ya? I drive also although I don't drive rigs anymore. Too much bullshit, not worth it as I see it. Now my truck(dump as it were) is 7 mins. from my front door, and I'm home everyday. Screw all that nonsense being on the road all the time; I may earn less driving now but it would take some pretty big bucks to give up my convenience. I might consider doing it again for an additional $80K per year, otherwise naw I'm good! Good luck trading.
Thanks for mobile trading desk station video. I have a question how to attach 3rd monitor to a desktop. I have 3 ports on Video Card (dual link DVI-D, HDMI and DP) and DP and HDMI on mother board. MY monitors (same brand) have DP, HDMI and VGA ports. I suppose HDMI and DP from video card to 2 monitor is easy answer. Any suggestions how to connect 3rd monitor? From Video Card DVI to VGA or DP or HDMI or from motherboard (either HDMI or DP ) to HDMI or DP respectively? Thanks
You can also create virtual desktops so you don't need as many monitors. As a side note, regarding your videos, I find that i have to jack up the volume on my receiver to hear your videos. Not sure why. I don't have this problem with other you tube channels.
Hey Ross. I have the same Lenovo y520 as yours. I'm unsure how to connect it to 3 or 4 monitors. Can you suggest what hardware do I need? I'm aware of splitters and adapters, but want to know a specific model that would allow me to connect multiple monitors to my laptop.
I see lots of comments on here suggesting how Ross does not need that many monitors. My two cents - This man is a great day trader. He could successfully trade with a single screen. However, in my experience, it helps tremendously to have multiple screens in order to closely follow as many stocks on one's watchlist on any given morning. Thanks for sharing your setup, Ross. Here's to thousands of green days to come. Let's get another one like OPTT this upcoming week!
So for someone like myself who is on a tight budget. What are your reccomendations for someone just starting out. I feel like I can add as I go. When the market pays me then I can add on more. Like the necessities. For someone like me your set up seemed a little intimidating. But this is also bc I am studying so all of this lol looks like alot. This prob isn't but to a newbie it is
For starters, a decent laptop and a extra monitor or two is a great place to start. We like the Lenovo Legion Y520 laptop. You don't have to get that exact computer, but you can compare it's specs with others that may be in a better price range.
If you are already on a tight budget then, to put it bluntly, day trading stocks is most likely not a priority right now. The long term success rate of traders is extremely low. You are most likely going to lose money which is why I would only recommend trading with disposable income. Do not try to trade with money that you need for other things like bills, tuition, medical expenses, rent or mortgage, car payment, etc.
That sounds very discouraging. How about he continues to practice with a demo account? That way he knocks two birds with one stone: 1. Learn/practice/get better using a demo account... 2. while saving money dedicated for trading
Grasping the concept of day trading has been fun, interesting, and exhilarating. Learning the terminology is my main focus. But being new to the internet in 2010 leaves me with another learning process. The only thing I heard about the internet is that you could play games and buy merchandise. I thought to myself "that's a large purchase just to play games and I'll stick with the console format for games." I didn't realise the possibilities of the net. When I get more self education I'll start the warrior course, really looking forward to the future of trading. You guys definitely lead by example. You guys talk the talk and walk the walk in a humble manner.☕
Hi Ross, what do you think of using a mac air 16gb with 4 monitors external ? or do you think it is worth to pay for the mac pro 13' to be able to have 32gb ram? also with regards to wifi trading or wired trading my router is in the living room so to wire the whole thing I will have to take an ethernet cable from the living room to my room. I am using td ameritrade but I do not see the level 2 and the candles pricing as fast as in lightspeed. My question is I don't like paying per trade and I see interactive brokers has also free comissions for trading. I saw your video about that trade that took 1.5 min to fill it and that's why you left interactive brokers. so my idea is either I keep my mac mini mid 2011 with 16gb ram in which I can install windows if you tell me is quicker than mac ox. and 4 hp monitors to see charts level2 and so on. I wanted to ask your opinion on that. looking fw thanks! Victor

Andro I doubt he can. He’s not even using the gpu on his “gaming” laptop. He might be able to get a game to play at 10fps. But it wouldn’t be playable.
1:45 you don't have to worry about drives, solid state or regular, overheating 2:20 even with 8gb ram, you probably won't be reaching the higher limit unless you're trying to game while doing stocks, 16 is nice to have for future scalability, but you can certainly skimp 5:15 native resolution is ~always~ going to look the best compared to downscaling; if you think it looks better, it's really just because pixel density is greater, and that's a nice feature to get 12:10 if you want reliability, you can also employ a remote desktop connection; not the fastest but gets the job done well on a decent PC
never considered small transportable screens, that's a good idea for a portable 'workstation' where you want more power than a small laptop since i have you on the hook, do you still use suretrader without problems? quite a lot of people report that their leverage changes (without notice) depending on the stock, and that the margin call and going over buying power (totaling ~50-75$ each time) is ludicrous, and that their systems are so poorly ran that you oft getting nickle and dimed for improper reasons that they don't or won't reverse the charge a majority of the time
Hi Ross , sorry for the dumb question, but would a MacBook Pro works as great as a Lenovo gamer computer? It is huge difference 8gb than 16gb? Thanks 🙏
Many trading software are designed to operate on Windows-only unfortunately, but it is possible for you to run Windows on a Mac using bootcamp, parallels, or Amazon Workspaces.
Joderic exactly. You could grab some old hd5450’s for next to nothing and run 9 monitors if you had enough pcie slots. You couldn’t game in them though.
Hey, Ross. I have a Lenovo laptop with Thunderbolt 3. Due to how I setup eSignal, I prefer a bit more screen real estate. Would 24-inch usb monitors work just as well?
Hey alley way, ya that would work! I have a mix of things. Big Dell Studio computer, it has the original hard drive, but I added a SSD hard drive just for trading. I bought 2 - 32” Samsung 1080 p TVs to use as monitors because they were on sale for the price of 24” monitors and it give me lots of real estate to add charts.. I have two vertical dual monitor stands with the 32” TVs on the bottom and above them are two 24” monitors that are connected to a Mac Mini that runs both windows and Mac OS. The 24” monitors on the Mac are for Chat room, StockTwits, and other internet media, where the 32” TV's are just for trading. If my Dell crashes, can quickly switch to the Mac to complete any open trades...I also have a Mac Laptop should I loose power, I can still login, connect to my phone for internet and close any trades I have open. I think it’s important to have a laptop to access your broker, through internet on your phone to be ready for any scenario where you could lose power and or internet during a trade.
in mid 2020 (almost 2021 soon) do you think a gaming laptop [to be used for trading/investing & making podcasts attached via a RodeCasterPro & maybe some video editing here and there] MUST have "64gb RAM" and "1024gb SolidState Drive" as a minimal? or is '32gb RAM' and '512 SSD' sufficient?
Those settings are reserved for my Annual Chat members and Warrior Pro students. Join my next webinar if you want to learn a little about them. You can sign up here: webinar.warriortrading.com/signup
Vortex Sam95 No it’s really not! Having more screens does not mean you have a great gpu. You could run those screens on a bunch of very low end, second hand cards. But you could never game on them.
In a previous role I ran a trading function for a large fund manager and our setup was nothing like this, instead we used 3 widescreen monitors, although 4 is quite common too. For a home based trader, I’d suggest the Dell multi input monitors are worth looking at and it would be my preferred choice. Whatever your preference, remember you are going to stare at the screen a long time each day so I’d suggest you pay for quality.
Hey Ross this vid had been so helpful ... I gotta question though. I am a minicab driver in the UK. My ideal set up would be a laptop like yours. Can I initially start with a good laptop and split the screen 3-4 ways. Would that work???
You can use a laptop to start and add 3-4 external monitors. Check out the following blogs to learn more: 1. www.warriortrading.com/day-trading-computer/ 2. www.warriortrading.com/3-tips-for-buying-your-first-trading-computer/
Ross, This may be a long shot. If I am using think or swim what is your recommendation for the center screen layout as well as the 2 external monitors.
I’m very interested in day trading . Watched from lot different traders to learn something different but I still don’t know should I have set up my trade station as you guys because I’m beginner , I can’t afford to make big station like that so could I still can use only laptop to trading . And for normal laptop not a gaming laptop is that ok or not??
A "gaming" computer is recommended because they usually all have top speed components like the processor, memory and hard drive. You can make a regular computer work, just look out for these things. "Intel i-3 Gen 8 or newer" because its cheap and fast. "256 or higher SSD" Solid State Drive is a fast hard drive where you save all you information on, such as you favorite cat memes. Finally the memory.... the more memory the faster your computer can thing. You'll want to shoot for 16GB or higher. VERY IMPORTANT... there are many variations of RAM out there, to simplify make sure it is 16GB DDR4 RAM!!! I see a lot of DDR3 out there which is a old version and 10x slower. I hope this helps finding a budget computer to start your journey to financial freedom.
I feel like a VR headset and well designed multi-screen/ window management app might be ideal for this type of work... 🤔 might need to make one just for trading, and if someone beat me to it, I’d love to put it use!

Great introduction to the laptop, but just like to add a little to it: Why gaming laptop? They are fast for a pretty cheap price. They usually have a decent CPU setup (quad-core most of the time). However, they are fast in that most of them have 8GB RAM, at DDR3 or even DDR4 (just which generation the RAM is). In the computational power world, good RAM is actually more important than good CPU and it is really not the standard issue for other laptops you see on the market. You can also get a gaming laptop with HD and change to SSD later. In addition, gaming laptops usually come with an okay graphics card, which turned out to be a pretty big deal when you have two external monitors. Not to mention they are pretty light for what they provide, so they are great when you travel. What about buying a more affordable machine and upgrade it? It could be an approach but the laptop upgrade is not easy. Except for SSD, most of the kinds of the stuff mentioned are not that affordable and could cause you big trouble if you don't have at least some experience with machine upgrade/modification. Try to search for the price of good RAM and laptop-specific graphics cards and think about how much money you would waste if you fail... But I would say gaming laptops also has its drawbacks. They were built for fast visual processing usually at the cost of stability. Of course, they are fast, but not when they are multi-processing. In addition, they are usually restrained to two external monitors (check how many HDMI and USB 3.0 ports are there and that's how many external monitors you would have, period.) There are two alternatives. If you are at the lower budget end, getting a desktop that supports multiple monitors are actually a good approach. Even if you are traveling, you don't need to work on your "lap". You need a good wifi, a queit environment. If you are okay with trading in a coffee shop then you shouldn't probably consider a desktop setup in the first place, just an external monitor would suffice, right? Therefore, a desktop works because it is cheap to upgrade and the smaller ones are actually lighter than a laptop. The other approach is getting a workstation, which is more expensive of course. But they come with great functionalities (more computational powers, usually support up to 4~6 external monitors, stable environment). Most importantly, it is still a laptop.

Most likely. All the software companies for trading should have minimal and recommended computer requirements posted on their website. Depending on the software, you may need to run windows anyway. Most people think they need way more than they actually do. You can check the system performance of a computer that says how much memory and everything is being used and most people won't even use what comes standard on their computer. In the beginning, don't focus so much on all the equipment. You need to learn to trade. Expensive equipment will maybe help a good trader to get a little better but it won't turn somebody who doesn't know what they are doing into the next millionaire trader.
so, what about if i have a mac pro 2018 , do i need any type of card to recorgnize a second monitor? i have one installed, and a tv as a support!! lol!

Hey Pamir, Unfortunately a lot of trading software doesn't work on Mac computers, so I suggest getting a powerful gaming computer. I use a Lenovo and Mike uses an Alienware.

Victor
Hey Victor, The more power the better and you're going to have to install windows because trading software doesn't work on macos.
Could you just use a 50" tv instead of lots of monitors?
Yes you could. If that's what you like.
It probably won't have enough resolution to display a clear image.

Dude this man can play Rust, Pubg, and r6s all at the same time
Andro y rUsT
Andro I doubt he can. He’s not even using the gpu on his “gaming” laptop. He might be able to get a game to play at 10fps. But it wouldn’t be playable.
LOL
1:45 you don't have to worry about drives, solid state or regular, overheating
2:20 even with 8gb ram, you probably won't be reaching the higher limit unless you're trying to game while doing stocks, 16 is nice to have for future scalability, but you can certainly skimp
5:15 native resolution is ~always~ going to look the best compared to downscaling; if you think it looks better, it's really just because pixel density is greater, and that's a nice feature to get
12:10 if you want reliability, you can also employ a remote desktop connection; not the fastest but gets the job done well on a decent PC
Appreciate the input, thank you!
never considered small transportable screens, that's a good idea for a portable 'workstation' where you want more power than a small laptop
since i have you on the hook, do you still use suretrader without problems? quite a lot of people report that their leverage changes (without notice) depending on the stock, and that the margin call and going over buying power (totaling ~50-75$ each time) is ludicrous, and that their systems are so poorly ran that you oft getting nickle and dimed for improper reasons that they don't or won't reverse the charge a majority of the time
This was just what I was looking for!! Your timing couldn't be more perfect.
Brilliant setup! Super clean and simple. I was worried about needing to bring a gas generator in my backpack to run the extra monitors.

Joderic exactly. You could grab some old hd5450’s for next to nothing and run 9 monitors if you had enough pcie slots. You couldn’t game in them though.
I could watch euphoria, rance 01, oni chichi, and kuroinu at the same time
Hey, Ross. I have a Lenovo laptop with Thunderbolt 3. Due to how I setup eSignal, I prefer a bit more screen real estate. Would 24-inch usb monitors work just as well?

Unless the SSD is your boot drive you will not notice any difference.
The screens don’t make the trader. knowledge and information makes the trader. All blinged up on 8 screens to distract you and ready to fail.

in mid 2020 (almost 2021 soon) do you think a gaming laptop [to be used for trading/investing & making podcasts attached via a RodeCasterPro & maybe some video editing here and there] MUST have "64gb RAM" and "1024gb SolidState Drive" as a minimal? or is '32gb RAM' and '512 SSD' sufficient?
That seems like plenty to me!

Vortex Sam95 and his guy just does boring ass trading on it
Vortex Sam95 No it’s really not! Having more screens does not mean you have a great gpu. You could run those screens on a bunch of very low end, second hand cards. But you could never game on them.
Cam Bar it was a meant to be a joke
In a previous role I ran a trading function for a large fund manager and our setup was nothing like this, instead we used 3 widescreen monitors, although 4 is quite common too. For a home based trader, I’d suggest the Dell multi input monitors are worth looking at and it would be my preferred choice. Whatever your preference, remember you are going to stare at the screen a long time each day so I’d suggest you pay for quality.
You're awesome, man. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
My pleasure!
Hey Ross this vid had been so helpful ... I gotta question though. I am a minicab driver in the UK. My ideal set up would be a laptop like yours. Can I initially start with a good laptop and split the screen 3-4 ways. Would that work???

Hey I will listen for free. Can't afford the full course.
Ross, This may be a long shot. If I am using think or swim what is your recommendation for the center screen layout as well as the 2 external monitors.
Finally.... good guidance on PC hardware decisions for nomadic traders.
You need a laptop powerful enough to run the trading software. That's why I recommend a gaming laptop.
I've had that idea 20 years ago, still not there *sigh*

Hey Ross, please keep filming "Life with Ross" videos, they are so good
Great introduction to the laptop, but just like to add a little to it:
Why gaming laptop?
Most importantly, it is still a laptop.
that explanation about why Ross likes to use a laptop 2:35 3:01 is alot lol, Thank you ross

Most likely. All the software companies for trading should have minimal and recommended computer requirements posted on their website. Depending on the software, you may need to run windows anyway.
