    Old timer here. We took cable car rides when we visited SF in 1988. We were 32 and now we're 70. We made it our mission to take many rides on all the lines. Sitting inside, in front, on the side seating,..and kind of hanging off while standing. I actually enjoyed watching the cable car "grip" operator, and seeing the sturdy levers, and various foot brakes. Its the coolest working artifact, from the 1800s, that people can still enjoy. Perfectly suited to tourists, maybe less so for people in a hurry. They are 95% authentic, refreshed, and maybe with some unobtrusive, modern electronics.

    The most fun is to stand off the side facing forward, as close to front as possible! The cable car drivers make it more fun too as they encourage chanting and cheering! So much fun!

    Hello. Looking for some advice. Never been to San Fran. Mostly there to board the Amtrak California Zephyr to Chicago over by Oakland but spending a half day across the bridge in San Fran. The plan is to take Cab to Trolley car, Trolley Car to Lombard. Walk down Lombard. Walk to Pier for Alcatraz tour. Cab back to hotel near Oakland. (Gotta get up early for Amtrak the following morning) I got the walk part down from Lombard, but never done a trolley car. Flying into Oakland, cab to nearby hotel, Cab across the bridge. Would I be correct in that I should have the cab drop off near Union Square to buy a Hyde line ticket to get to the top end of Lombard?

    You do a great job and I hope you are still creating content. My cousin and I are visiting SFO in a few weeks and I've been there several times but haven't rode a cable car.

    Thanks for the video. If you buy it on the MuniMobile app, do you have to go to that ticket window to show it to someone or just jump straight into the line for the trolley? Then once you get to the front of the line, do you just pull out your app and show it to a driver?

    • @EDDvlogs
      @EDDvlogs  2 роки тому +1

      Hey there, so, it depends. Sometimes the operators will ask for it, other times not. Same if you get on a bus or the metro. But, if they do ask, you must have it on hand if you don’t want a fine or get kicked out.
      On the MuniMobile app you can make your ticket “active” and so it becomes valid for a period of time. If they ask it, just make sure it’s active and you should be good.

    • @wendym1234
      @wendym1234 2 роки тому

      Yes. You can just jump onto the cable car and show your phone.

    SF relies on the Cable Cars for massive tourism. Many people visit SF just to see and ride the cable cars.

    Can you use your clipper card to ride the cable car, if so where do you swipe it please?

    • @EDDvlogs
      @EDDvlogs  Рік тому

      Yes you can, but you have to pay for a specific "package" which includes the cable car. You can do this on the clipper card locations on the stations, or using the MuniMobile app, which is the avenue I would recommend. If you download the app, you will see the options for the cable car right there
      Hope that helps

    The California Line can't turn. They go up and down California Street from Bay Street to Van Ness. They are larger in size but they can go back and forth without having to turn. The Powell and Hyde street cars are totally different. They are built to turn...make turns, corners ect. But those cars when they get to the end of the line have to turn...hense cable car turns.

    • @EDDvlogs

      Hey Doug,

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng Рік тому

      That's incorrect. The California line runs on California Street from Drumm Street to Van Ness Avenue. The California cable cars are double-ended with "grip" levers at either end of the longer cars which are operated in each direction without the cars being *turned **_around_* at the ends of the line. The California cable cars do make turns at California and Hyde Street where they continue on non-revenue track to return to the barn.

    I wanna video on how the hell people survive with that crazy rent! I'm from monterey BTW and its high down here but nothing like sf

    • @EDDvlogs
      @EDDvlogs  3 роки тому +1

      Haha, I think the trick is the people you know (moving in with people/replacing someone), and handling expectations.
      If you expect to live close to downtown you better know you’ll be paying way more than if you’re living in the avenues.

    • @JasmineApple
      @JasmineApple 3 роки тому +2

      You get in a rent controlled building. Plus, most people who live in the city don't have cars, so there's no monthly payment, no gas expense, no car insurance. That, alone, can save $700 or so per month in expenses that you can apply to rent. And there are (were) a lot of good paying jobs - salaries in SF are going to pay better than the same job would in TX, for example.

    I've always wanted to ride them, but they're all the way across the country and a bit far for me to go there.
    They came about after that guy saw a horse & buggy operator beating his horse while trying to climb a hill. To a point it collapsed and the buggy & it fell down the hill. He had a history of cableways used in mining.
    $7 seems a bit steep, but it is Cali, or is that for an all day pass?

    • @EDDvlogs
      @EDDvlogs  3 роки тому

      Thank you for your comment! If I mentioned $7 bucks on the vid, that is probably just for the cable car, and you can check the Muni Mobile app for specific prizes for 1, 3 & 7-Day passes that are (at the moment I’m typing this) $13, $31 & $41 respectively
