- So rather than doing a typical 'Top 10' list of songs, I decided to try something a little different. Instead here's a timeline of great guitar songs from the 1960s. No order of 'best', just a selection of songs in chronological order that I like and think are great.

I posted this comment a year ago and i couldn't have been more wrong. Im now a year into instruction and my teacher doesn't really care as long as you sound good.
What difference does it make if I play on my head or lying down if It sounds the same?

You had bad guitar teachers if they told you so. Look at the guitar virtuosos and you will see that none of them holds the guitar perpendicular to the body like the guy in the video does. And you don’t even need to have a guitar to understand why. Due to the fact that he holds neck so close to himself, he has to pull back his left elbow and his arm is constantly tense. Due to this positioning of the guitar, his right elbow, on the contrary, bulges forward at this crazy angle. Again, he holds his whole right arm in suspense instead of just resting it on the cutout of the guitar, which is there specifically for this. Thats why his alternate picking is bad - instead of playing Misirlou by moving his wrist only, while the relaxed forearm rests on the guitar, not only his whole arm but his body is shacking like he is having a seizure due to tension in his arm and shoulder.

@@theali8oras274 It doesn't as long as you're playing entry level stuff. But when you get to the certain level of speed and difficulty you just have to hold guitar and pick in the right way if you don't want to sound like a total mess or your hand to fall of mid gig.
The way I'm sitting and holding the guitar is mostly due to how I'm filming it.

Miserlou was way ahead of its time as played by Dick Dale. It’s the heaviest song you played and the earliest. The contribution of instrumental surf gets overlooked. Many that went on to become rock gods can point back to the instrumental surf as what got them playing.
I would argue, Can't get no... And Helter Skelter could be considered heavier and possibly even communication breakdown, but agree with your point.

Whats so great about these 60s riffs is they werent so over complicated, really gives you time to get in the groove of the music and feel what the song has to offer

@@chambeet Yeah, i noticed that. Guitar-nerd types tend not to give punk/alternative musicians nearly enough credit. I think ron asheton is one of, if not the most underrated guitarist. His impact on heavy music is massive, on a level similar to hendrix or iommi, imo.That riff could be played in a 90's grunge song and it wouldn't sound out of place at all (tbh grunge probably wouldn't have existed at all without the stooges)

Big Kinks fan here, but Link Wray invented the distorted power chord sound with Rumble in the late 50s.

The magical thing about music is that Can't Explain and Wild Thing are based on three identical chords, but by the order in which they're played and the phrasing, you get two totally different sounding songs!
So happy you included "I wanna be your dog". Underrated, and was one of the first punk songs ever. Way ahead of it's time.

Early rock and roll is on par with most folk music in terms of simplicity. I play a lot of Mexican stuff and what I learned is most of these dudes didn't go to school or take lessons they just picked it up and did whatever sounded nice. Whatever picked up chicks I guess. Music is perfect man

I'm pretty sure my garage band (and millions more like it), played 90% of these songs. Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Byrds, that pretty much covered it.
The Misirlou riff should be E-F-G# not E-F#-G#

DanFudge I’d go with some Aussie rock or Japanese rock, the folks in those countries are keeping it alive. Rocks actually on the radio in aus. I’ve heard.
I live in Aus and there are plenty of bands to be excited for that are up and coming plenty of range between genres it’s slowly coming back 👍
There is such a wealth of rock music over 70 years, I don't think it matters that it has left the mainstream to be honest. You could listen to records for years and continually find unheard albums that blow your mind. Without ever reaching the 2010s

It's a great timeline !! Even if in my opinion you miss all a side of psychedelic rock like the Doors, Quicksikver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane etc... And also Creedence Clearwater Revival and a part of country rock like Buffalo Springfield, CS and Nash and even Neil Young... But that's great good job !!! I really enjoyed this video !!

The Beatles are my favorite band of all time, but John Lennon was definitely inspired by Bob Dylan, they were making pop before the started having more mature folk songs on their albums. Anyway, The Rolling Stones are ok, they had some great riffs and some great tunes, but they really just played the blues, sure they were the best at it, but other bands like the Yardbirds did that to. I feel like in terms of progressing rock forward, I feel like Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Doors, The Beatles, arguably The Who, and honestly most bands had more impact. I feel like their main gimmick was “ look, we are the Beatles, but edgy.”, which would be fine if they rocked harder like Pink Floyd or something or created new techniques, but they didn’t do much in that regard. Definitely had more influence than the Monkees tho, and at the end of the day, this is just my opinion. Also surprised The Beach Boys or Jefferson Airplane weren’t in this vid.
