At 1:36:09 good point!!! Maybe we shouldn't make so many until we have a way to dispose of/recycle them? Naw...who wants to do the responsibile thing anyway. The conversation that continues on is very interesting & def worth a listen. The desert in Chile...wow! Thanks Snakes & James Kaschmitter. I learned a lot. James brings up some REALLY good points about the issues with current EVs & the ph alternative
I'm only halfway thru, but this is great. I deal with cellular electronics every day and I'm finally getting some answers to stuff ive wondered about for years.
when I was in the Navy in late 1980's we started testing torpedoes fueled by Lithium and the question came up what would happen if seawater breeched the fuel tank and they said they didn't know but thought it would explode, well a month later when we are testing the torpedo for first time it ran good and they shut it down and 2 guys were in a Zodiac with a noose to go retrieve it and tow it back to our ship saltwater leaked into the fuel area and it exploded just as the guys were almost to the target our test turned into a rescue and retrieval of wreckage mission it also produced a mini mushroom cloud when it blew that always made me nervous about all these lithium batteries we have today and if one of them gets into contact with water
Because of thunderstorms & hurricanes (3 week power outage in 2020...Laura) here in Louisiana I`m sitting in a room with about 8 kwh of solar rechargeable lithium ion & LiFeP04 batteries for everything from lights to a small window ac. To preserve the lifespan of my lawnmower batteries I store them at 40% to 50% charged, recharge to 100% right before I mow, and put a frozen gel pack wrapped in a towel on top of them in summer when I mow. I never completely discharge them either like most people do who then complain "My batteries are no good!"
Finally a subscription! Signed up today, and on episode 24 listening about clay shadows and skerpderps ❤ I sat down this morning with a cup of coffee and codeine to listen to this episode and my mrs is nearby doing her hair as we are about to go shopping for our snowboarding holiday and the episode starts with you saying "ok lets talk about batteries" and my mrs says "ok dont worry about getting hold of some valis or zanax to make me sleep on the plane ill just listen to this" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fully discharging a lithium ion battery can cause dendrites to form, especially if it`s left that way, which can cause internal short circuits. You can also damage one by charging in cold temperatures or leaving a fully charged battery in a hot place which damages cells because of swelling. Charging too fast in a hot place isn`t good either. LiFeP04 batteries are more forgiving and therefore safer but you really need to learn as much as you can especially if building your own system. You can really mess up real fast.
My 300ah LiFeP04 battery weighs less than 70 lbs but has nearly 4 kwh of storage. It can run my small window ac all night if I set the thermostat reasonably. It wasn`t even fully charged when we had a bad sudden storm one night and it ran my window ac from 3 am until 6 pm the next evening. Because of clouds the solar was useless though. My record is 32 hours on a full charge but I turned it off and recharged with a wall charger when the voltage dropped below 12v.
Even if you have one of the small 300w portable solar power stations (Jackery 300 etc) you can still use it to cook. I tested a little Aroma 4 cup rice cooker (actually holds about 1 1/5 cups dry rice and a little over 2 cups water) and it only uses 200w on high and 40w on low. Almost all of the 300w immersion water heaters for cups use about 240w. You can boil eggs in a cup with them or even heat a couple of gallons of wash water in a bucket. It`s ok to submerge the entire heater and part of the cord at your own risk. The 12-24v DC cookers for truckers/cars can be connected directly to 12v solar panels if you add your own MC4 connectors.
Remember the old days when you could spotlight rabbit pests on the farm all week with a 6v headlamp? Now you`re lucky if one holds a charge for over an hour. I`ve been thinking about switching back to a trusty carbide miner`s headlamp but carbide has big restrictions on shipping, of course. You can get much closer to the bunnies with one of them.
I work in the Fire & Security sector and the scary things I have to deal with is the fire extinguishers that specifically designed for Lithium fires, they are all Water based fire extinguishers, or a derivative of AFFF, Aqueous Film Forming Foam, and AFFF is going to be banned because it is a Persistent Pollutant. Do not buy 'All Fire' fire extinguishers either because they don't cover All Fires, these are also Water based Foam fire extinguishers and not safe to use against Electricity nor near electrical devices, nor for cooking oil fires nor chemical fire or Gas fires.
"Valley of Death" process for anything should be done in emulated reality. This would enable thousands of iterations of evolutionary generations, producing refined products with all terminal failures virtual.
If the valley temple was refurbed by really high tech granite blocks, then how old is it? Do people realize that that means the old kingdom builders refurbed the already eroded temple?
Mate if your comments are going to bring people down, especially ones that bring you entertainment, dont post them. They have 300+ awesome episodes hours long each, if this one sode doesnt spark your interest so what, the rest of are happy with it.
Didn't know I was that interested in batteries until I watched this.
Thanks, very informative and relevant to modern life.
You guys put together very interesting shows. Love it as absolutely always
I’ve listened to this podcast around 10 times when I go to sleep, batteries go into my dreams, I really like this podcast, good to actually see it
this whole episode is a native ad for Big Duracell
Great interview/presentation, huge thanks to James for sharing the knowledge.

you guys are so great at making your guest feel comfortable and at ease. Great breakdown!
More of these please. Best vid I've seen to explain battery tech!
fascinating presentation, thank you
Excellent. I'm glad you are staying with being The Tangent Cube "of Science".🌟
The thumbnail is hilarious hahaha I love you guys lol love live the serpents

Greetings from an *old New Jersey guy* in SWEDEN. Snakes!
dreamy battery technology
The TSA always tells you to not travel with your vape (in my case THC) but they don't care.🎉
The thumbnail have me weak hahaha 💀 😂 I f-ing love you guys. Hid bless the serpents
When i was in the navy in the late 1980s we tested lithium torpedoes. Then a crewmate suggested adding sudophedrin. Next thing you know.....
* pseudoephedrine

I’ll defer to listening when I’m sewing some yacht cover next week. I e-bike 20 miles a day.
You're a bad ass
1:49:10 As demonstrated by those Chinese busses. If the clock was to be trusted it went from zero to enraging fire in less than 5 seconds.

Have they ever found a shadow of a battery in a clay layer
Project Farm just reviewed AA batteries.

Ok
I’m using a 20V Max Lithium drill battery to prop my phone up while I smoke
I like “Pensive Kyle” ……. not so sure about “Annoyed Russ” 😅 Thumbnail game improving ✌🏼
Not all lithium batteries explode
Not all bees sting either.
only the lebanese versions explode, for some reason 🙈🙉🙊
No "depth charge" with Lithium, it doesn't sink

Did you have something blow up? Im😢
