Like Dak, Romo’s biggest Achilles Heel was Jerry Jones, who has a knack for putting together extremely talented teams and saddling them with coaching that’s just mid, especially in the postseason.
Dallas' chance to win a Superbowl was Dak and Zeke's rookie season. If he hadn't gotten injured in the preseason, it would've been the best combination of O-line, run game, and defense he would have ever had. I get why they didn't let him fight for his job, it's hard to justify benching a QB leading a team to the 1-seed, but that offense ran (literally) through Zeke, not Dak. Dallas just needed smart, experienced QB play in the playoffs, which is what Romo had that Dak didn't. If Romo started vs Green Bay, Dallas doesn't fall behind and probably wins by multiple scores.
I agree. The 2016 season was the best the chance cowboys had to win the Super Bowl post 1996. I really think they were the best team in the nfl that season. The problem was that with Dak starting, the nucleus of the team was too young and that team was built for Romo, not Dak. A rookie Dak Prescott couldn’t connect with Dez like Romo could. I think if Romo played, they would have won the Super Bowl that season. They were better than GB and the falcons and they wouldn’t have choked that badly against an overrated (in my opinion) patriots team.
I think romo was a top QB when he was playing, which translated to him being a great commentator for his first couple seasons in the booth. Then the NFL offenses started changing more from what he was running and because he didnt know as much, NOR DID IT SEEM LIKE HE EVER DID ANY RESEARCH/PREP, he just started doing the "ooooooooooo well I DONT KNOW JIM". He went from a broadcaster with great insight into the game to being your drunk uncle on thanksgiving in the booth for every game.
To me, a color commentator should be, first and foremost, entertaining. And he is the most entertaining color commentator in the NFL. So, I don't care about any falloff on insight. The legendary John Madden also got...erratic in his lateryears on insight, but he brought the hype like no other. And Romo brings the comedy, he makes games more fun to watch.
The eternal burden of post-90's Dallas QBs: you will be universally hated until you back up the smack talk of all your team's loud and proud(???) fanbase and lead the Cowboys to a super bowl victory
Romo was underrated his career. He was elite and carried teams with horrible O Lines and poor to avg defenses. Along with having the clapper as his coach. He had to throw the ball so damn much due to lack of good running game. He had the most 4th quarter comebacks during his tenure and went toe to toe with Peyton Manning in 2013 vs Denver only for his defense to shit the bed. When he finally had a competent team in 2014, he lost due to the Dez Catch. Yet year after year, idiot fans and analysts called him a choker and a interception artist. Its like people chose who to hate without knowing facts. The dude only uas 2 ints in playoff appearances. The cowboys without Romo won 30% of games and with Romo won 60%.
It's about the same with Rodgers. He would always play his best in the NFCCG, but his defense choked for him. So people blame Rodgers and think he's not that good.
As an Eagles fan, I didn't like Romo when he was a QB, but he is, in my opinion, the best color announer in football. He's hilarious, incredably entertaining.
He may be the most hated but he definitely deserves the most respect. Going undrafted and getting to be a "franchise" QB for the Cowboys. That's pretty amazing, I really wished him and my hometown football hero Jason Witten wouldn't have went to the Caribbean in 07 though!🤬
He’s actually one of the best ever to do it. Numbers don’t lie. Hate it or like it, you can’t deny him being undrafted and playing for years in the most polarizing football team in America.
I hated him up until the day he hung up his Cowboys jersey for the last time, then I didn't care about him. Once he started his broadcasting career and evolved to become Romostradamus I have liked him ever since.
In a funny sense, he’s almost a Romo too somewhat. Solid in his craft but mostly remembered as a guy who kickstarted the career of Brady and well..alongside Romo here.
Romo was a victim of being the QB for Dallas. He was prety good, never on the tier of elite QBs. Imagine the god awful overhype if Dallas ever actually gets a QB that can win super bowls again... The media will be so unbearable. I really hope they end up resigning Dak for another 5 years.

2nd best UDFA QB after Warner. Unfortunately, his coach was Jason "8-8" Garrett Also that "oH mY gOsH" during the botched spike at the end of the 49ers Cowboys playoff matchup in 2022 was classic lmao
I've been a Dallas my whole life. I remember the 1-15 season. Romo was awesome. Arguably the best undrafted QB ever. It takes a team to win. And routinely, Romo would be clutch by getting a late go-ahead TD only to have the defense give up an even later go-ahead TD or field goal to the other team. The same thing is happening to Dak now. I also think Romo would have won that playoff game against Green Bay in Dallas Dak's rookie year. That was a fantastic team and the decision to start Dak over Romo was a bad call. Dak made several rookie mistakes in that one that Romo would have probably not made.
Even though I am from the Bay area and my family are 49ers fans and I grew up in the '90s and was definitely aware of the 49ers and cowboys rivalry although to be fair I didn't really watch sports as a kid I only started watching them since the mid-2000s, but anyways I have never had a problem with Tony Romo. Sure he played for the cowboys who have that historic rivalry with the 49ers, but hey you know what I think Tony Romo is a great guy and I thought he was a really fantastic player. It's unfortunate for him that he's never gone past the divisional round in the playoffs. He's come close to doing so, but let's face it there's so many other players who just have not had the chance to even get even that far in the playoffs the divisional round that is. So although he never actually was able to lead the cowboys to win the big one which You honestly can't entirely blame it on him, I mean come on there are 32 teams in the NFL and at the time there were a total of 12 teams in the playoffs now there's 14 of them all trying to go all the way and win that Super bowl. It is not an easy thing to do. If I'm not mistaken Tony Romo actually has the greatest regular season statistics of any quarterback in cowboys history. Him not winning enough in the playoffs does not mean he's a choker or that he's bad. The only time I could say he really choked and for all we know it might not even been a joke It might have been just some accident just some freak accident and he didn't even have issues with nervousness or anything for all we know unless he admitted to having some at the time I don't know but when he fumbled on that holding on to the ball for the kicker in that wild card round where they lost of the Seahawks. Anyways I think he was a great player and when I did watch his broadcasts when he first started I thought he did an amazing job.. I do have to point out that since watching his broadcasts I haven't really watched live sports like since like 2018 or something. I've only occasionally dabbled and watching a few live sports here and there depending on what it is as I just typically just don't watch anything live anymore. So perhaps because of that I wasn't aware of Tony Romo possibly going stale in the broadcast booth. Who knows? Maybe perhaps he'll win some Emmys for his broadcasting prowess but still be well hated like Joe Buck. Yes Joe Buck has actually won some Emmys even though it's hard to really meet anybody who likes him at all😂
“I can’t stand the thought of not going to another super bowl again.” “Bur Tony, you’re too nice of a guy, I can’t take your soul.” “You did it for OJ Simpson!” “Yeah, but OJ was coming down here anyway.” “Fine, I’ll go to the super bowl as an announcer and I’ll win an Emmy!” “That’s the spirit!” (Yeah, but I’m also a Packers fan.)
I got into football later in life and gravitated toward the Cowboys. Romo was the first QB I watched every Sunday. I’ll always have a soft spot for him just like I’m sure kids love their childhood QB heroes.
"Boys fans you need to stop the hero worshipping. This guy was nothing special. If you have to bring up a flawed metric like passer rating or the fact that he was undrafted, you are reaching for it. He was 2-7 in elimination games with as many TOs as TDs (not including that fumble in the Seattle PO game). He was part of the two biggest blown leads in Dallas history. In '06 with PO seeding on the line he had 6 TDs to 10 TOs in his final 5 games; in '07 again with PO seeding on the line he had 1 TD to 5 TOs in his final 3 games (9 games in those 2 years - 7 TDs and 15 TOs - not good). In his only PO and PB years ('06,'07,'09, '14) he had 33 PBs and 9 APs playing behind him. IOW, when he wasn't on loaded teams, he did nothing. Dallas fanboys - don't bother with a reply, I'll ignore it.
Tony seems like a decent enough guy who enjoyed the game a lot more than some of the other QBs of that era. Trying to predict the plays from the booth got real old, real fast for me. Particularly when he'd be circling a receiver at the line of scrimmage right before the snap - so distracting, especially for those of us who like to scan the formation and try to decipher what the defense was going to be doing.
I found my way to clickbait sports via TGS. I’m a Cowboys fan but I also personally connect with his style presentation and humor. I respect what all of you do and all of you seem to be authentic and work toward and audience that appreciates what you do, not simply catering to what might be profitable. Brandon might be someone that i think clicks with me on a degenerative level and the cadence with which we speak and joke meshes……but i truly loved watching this video as a cowboys fan.
One of my earliest NFL memories was back in 2012, Cowboys vs Giants. That was the game where Dez made that insane td catch, only for it to not count because his hand was out of bounds. I reacted to that by yelling, "In your face Tony Romo!" 😆
The only reason he was really hated was cuz he played for the Dallas Cowboys. Dak gets the same treatment and is scrutinized more than most QBs of his talent. If I was a QB, I'd stay clear of the Cowboys. There's so much pressure on that team to win super bowls even though it isn't warranted cuz they need to at least get to a conference championship before we start talking super bowls.
Announcer Romo seemed to make more noises than words during his first few years. Apparently he's improved, but I don't watch the sport anymore so all I have are memories of him grunting like someone defecating while giving birth.
I don’t know why people hate him. I don’t think you need to LIKE him but he was a decent qb and he offers great insight during games as a commentator. Dude has always seemed like a good guy to me
Romo was elite af. If given a offensive line and a decent defense early in his career he would of got a chip. Not his fault Patrick Crayton can't catch and he stopped his route. Not his fault Demarco Murray fumbles, and not his fault on the Dez Bryant catch. Same fans that scream he chokes are the ones that blamed him for 505 yards, 5 tds against Manning and the Broncos. That 1 game is a great measurement of how his career is skewed
I think he has won more than just a PGA celeb tournament. He has been paid Millions through his career as a player and broadcaster and BONUS points for a smokin hot wife!
If JJ had provided this amazing scrambler with a decent line so he didn't have to run for his life every snap Romo would be a multi superbowl winner. JJ thought he could get by with a cheapo OL because of Romo's talent and didn't buy an OL.
Romo was a Jeckle & Hyde-type player: one of the best regular season QBs in NFL history; but simultaneously one of the worst postseason QBs in NFL history
Wow, I was surprised to see a Giants fan actually admit that Dez caught it. A lot of NFC East fans just deny it and say it was incomplete. You definitely have my respect. I don't really have it in my heart to hate anyone, although I will say as a Chiefs fan, Romo does annoy me a bit. The guy is constantly glazing Josh Allen and every time we face the Bills he always acts a little too excited when we're losing. He's supposed to be neutral, but it's pretty obvious he roots for the Bills every time they face the Chiefs.
Imagine if he had signed with Denver and eventually supplanted Jake Plummer. He probably would be a well liked guy and that would be about it. Dallas is a magnet for haters and I count myself as one of those haters. It's just what we do as football fans. As far as announcers go, most are tedious so he is fitting right in.
Wait, wait wait… Did you say Sean Payton was the head coach of the Cowboys when Romo came out of college?? I did not know that. Being a Washington fan always loved Romo. He may have beat up on us once or twice, but I always knew, they were never gonna make a playoff run even if they lead the division. I slept better back then.

Yes Joe Buck has actually won some Emmys even though it's hard to really meet anybody who likes him at all😂
Put up great numbers in the regular season, only to step on rakes in the post-season, every year.
Dak is Romo 2.0
“I can’t stand the thought of not going to another super bowl again.”
“Bur Tony, you’re too nice of a guy, I can’t take your soul.”
“You did it for OJ Simpson!”
“Yeah, but OJ was coming down here anyway.”
“Fine, I’ll go to the super bowl as an announcer and I’ll win an Emmy!”
“That’s the spirit!”
(Yeah, but I’m also a Packers fan.)
He was an undrafted free agent! What more do you expect out of the guy?
As a Cowboy hater I love him, Dak Prescott too!
You replace the r with an h and you got yourself a banger joke in middle school
Still my guy. He's the reason why I was not just a Cowboys fan but a football fan as well.
I thought it was cool when he did that, probably the only time i really enjoyed an announcer since john Madden retired from the booth.
Dude has won at life
I always liked Romo
More than anything, I'm just baffled how his last few years in the booth haven't led to a lucrative lozenge sponsorship.
The best part about the patriots being bad is we don’t get stuck with Romo on our broadcasts. Thank the football gods
Whenever I see Romo as an announcer or any cowboys for that matter I just mute it and listen to the local radio broadcast while I watch the game 😂
Charlie Weis said what needed to be said about Romo's performance announcing the Super Bowl.
If Romo had some defenses that could hold the lead in the final minutes of a game, he'd have lead the Cowboys to multiple Super Bowls.
I think any Dallas QB is polarizing!!
10:47 so he’s Billy Mumphrey?
Everyone in the group besides Tom will admit that Dez Bryant caught that ball.
Sam Hurd the drug kingpin
Announcer Romo seemed to make more noises than words during his first few years. Apparently he's improved, but I don't watch the sport anymore so all I have are memories of him grunting like someone defecating while giving birth.
6:34 it wasn't an extra point attemp to tie the game, it was a field goal attempt tht would have given them the lead.
Just a video idea, maybe a story about Tommy Maddox will be interesting.
Lol I thought this video would be about Ryan Leaf or Johnny Football lol
in the least i'd say the man has a solid work ethic.
Jessica >TaYtAy
His first 2 years of announcing were great.
Didn’t mind him as a player, hate him in the booth
I don’t know why people hate him. I don’t think you need to LIKE him but he was a decent qb and he offers great insight during games as a commentator. Dude has always seemed like a good guy to me
I actually really liked Romo as a QB and I like him even more as a commentator
Romo was elite af. If given a offensive line and a decent defense early in his career he would of got a chip. Not his fault Patrick Crayton can't catch and he stopped his route. Not his fault Demarco Murray fumbles, and not his fault on the Dez Bryant catch. Same fans that scream he chokes are the ones that blamed him for 505 yards, 5 tds against Manning and the Broncos. That 1 game is a great measurement of how his career is skewed
That 5TD game is a summation of Romo's entire career. And yet year after year idiots blame him for everything
I think he has won more than just a PGA celeb tournament. He has been paid Millions through his career as a player and broadcaster and BONUS points for a smokin hot wife!
Man asking for a 2nd rounder for a backup QB seems crazy. Especially since someone like Fields got traded for a bag of footballs
Cliff Avril bears the blame for putting Romo onto announcing; he folded up Tony like a cheap suit.
It hurts more than I care to say as a grown man, that this dude didn't get a ring.
If JJ had provided this amazing scrambler with a decent line so he didn't have to run for his life every snap Romo would be a multi superbowl winner. JJ thought he could get by with a cheapo OL because of Romo's talent and didn't buy an OL.
If the Cowboys had 2014 Romo these past few years, they’d would’ve gotten to the Superbowl easily, maybe won it all
Yeah i remember they were calling Jessica Simpson "Yoko Romo" for a while.
Did expect to see a FUMA shirt in this video 😂
Been here since before 5 points had a face reveal.
I didn't hate Romo himself as much as I hated the hype train NEVER SHUTTING UP about him.
It was his endless glazing of Brady during games that I couldn't stand.
I remember as a kid my dad had a custom jersey that said "Homo for Romo"
Tony Romo is the best kick holder in NFL history.
Romo was a Jeckle & Hyde-type player: one of the best regular season QBs in NFL history; but simultaneously one of the worst postseason QBs in NFL history
I live in burlington wi. Literally the only thing that this town cares about is that Tony Romo lived here.
Personally I think Romo might make a good coach. Especially offensive coordinator
Loved him as a QB, hate him as an announcer
“EHHHHH I DONT KNOW FIVE”
