Guide to Light Tank Tactics and Scouting - Still Good in 2024!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 лип 2024
- I review common mistakes and break down effective tactics and tips to help you understand how to play light tanks correctly.
Light tanks have the highest "skill cap" of any class in World of Tanks (WoT), as they are fragile, possess relatively weak guns, and have enough mobility to get the driver into trouble.
00:00 Introduction
What Bad Looks Like
00:43 Suiscouting / charging recklessly
02:52 Spawn camping
03:39 Spotting in areas where spotting can be done by anyone else
04:37 Overexposing your tank
07:50 Dumb brawling / poor trading
What Good Looks Like
09:27 Active scouting smartly
12:29 Getting early spots + damage
18:27 Leveraging intervening soft cover
19:36 Exploiting low-risk opportunities
21:39 Knowing when to flank
29:08 Knowing when to back off / retreat
34:16 Keeping your cool when you have support
35:15 Beware of friendlies who'll get you killed
37:00 Playing with low HP
Recommended UI Options
1. Settings → General → Enable Expanded Minimap Features → Always: this tracks the last spotted location for every enemy tank
2. Settings → General → View range indicators on the Minimap: check all 3 checkboxes. The first shows the view range circle, which is how far your tank can spot. Note that doesn’t account for enemy camo. The second checkbox shows the max distance (445m) that any tank can theoretically spot. The third checkbox shows the max distance that you will render tanks that have been spotted by an ally
Recommended Equipment
1. For the vast majority of light tanks (aside from the ELC AMX), use Coated Optics
2. For the other 2 slots, typically you want one for gun handling (VStab or GLD) and the other for reload (Rammer). For autoloaders that can't mount Rammer, go with Vents
3. For light tanks around tier 5 that can't get to 445m view range with Optics and Situational Awareness, I have been experimenting with replacing Rammer with Binocs and having good results. This would be regarded as a controversial choice by other Unicums and I want to emphasize that I do this to help out-spot higher-tier tanks, not to sit stationary and be passive for long stretches of time
P.S. this video was something I've wanted to do for a couple years - light tank gameplay is so nuanced - but I knew it would be a TON of work so I kept putting it off. It took several months to collect and catalogue the illustrative footage in the video, so I hope you find it helpful. I'm so relieved to finish it :)
This video is part of my "Road to Unicum" series in which I share what I learned as I progressed towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I'm reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help players improve their gameplay.

This. Is. Fantastic.
Covered so many aspects. I was watching it in portions, so it took me a few days to watch it all. Wondering how long it took to plan it all, to get examples for all of that etc., a month probably! This should be shown in the WoT LT museum! :)
A month? Hah! Took 3 months of collecting footage. Was worth it based on viewer comments.
amazing job m8! be great if you used the ru251 as well :D
Taugrim, you get the biggest compliments (and truly deserve them!) by the best scout player EU - not me, Ilya Red. :-) Great scout guide, mate!!
@@taugrim great video, appreciate the effort
@@taugrim I've got over 10k games in WoT and I still got alot from this vid. TY.
Excellent Guide Taugrim! What's the next guide on :)
Czech tiers 6-9 and Swedish tier 9 Strv 103.
Skoda T50 is a favorite tank, sooooo much fun to play with the mobility, gun handling/depression, and autoloader.
Nice, got WG commenting on youtubers... thats pretty cool guys, :) and thanks for the upload Taugrim.
World of Tanks North America oh damn senpai noticed you D:
Skoda has Good Gun handling you say!? You must play mid to short ranges to be able to hit 2/3 shots with that bloody gun. Yes, if you`re 10-50 meters away from a very large tank and if you`re behind/side him so you can freakin` stop to shot...you have 80% chances to hit 3/3. Regarding other aspects, i agree, but no Sir, no gun handling. Had enough 5-6K dmg games in it, true, but had also tons of games where i shot 15 times and only 2 shots landed in conditions of perfect aim (full aim) on steady/tracked targets.
Hello there World of Tanks :D
Still helpful to a noob like me all these years later. I hope you return some day and make more WOT videos. You're in a league of your own when it comes to explaining concepts clearly.
There is something nostalgic about watching replays from before 1.0 graphics overhaul. Thanks for the pro tips Taugrim.
Heavy and medium driver here, I've just started trying out the lights simply because most of the lights on my teams "suicide scout". Most of these maps, you lose vision, you lose the game. First thing I noticed is that I'm not you or Turkey. :) I truly stink at lights but I try to stay in the game until the end, spotting, doing damage when I can, and taking arty out of the game. It's a ton tougher than you gent's make it out to be, but I'm a quick learner.
You created a video specific to the topic, with good game clips, and narration was to the point, providing crucial and important information, good work.
Here is my side-comment:
Far too many players have very poor situational & immediate area awareness. They get into a snipe position, they focus on tanks across the dam map and have no clue that spotted red tanks are approaching their location, they continue to ignore their immediate area which is now in threat and they die. A lot of times that causes a flank to fail and the game is lost. This happens in every type of tank from lights to arties.
holy shit, this is the most extensive Light tank guide I have ever seen. Thank you very much for making this man, I have been trying to wrap my head around my errors and this helps me see them. :) keep on going mate.
Thanks, this kind of feedback makes all the work that went into creating this video worth it. o7

That was brilliant, to have a condensed video of light tanking tips, brilliant! Thx Taugrim
It was a long time coming but it was worth the wait. This is a greaet all-in-one tutorial on running light tanks. Thanks!
Excellent video Taugrim. I enjoy lights more than any other class, and it's nice to know that I've been doing most everything as you describe it. The only thing I feel is holding me back from really excelling is that I just don't have time to play very much, but that's unavoidable. What I do get to play though is fun, fun, fun! Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Long video but super useful. Provides almost everything new LT players need to know in a single video. Great work man!
This was a fast phase video covering great many (if not all?) aspects of LT's play - most difficult to play but also most rewarding WoT class. I will definitely watch it again when sober :)
I think these are the most in depth guides to this game. Very good.
One of the very best Light Tank guides on YT. Thanks for this!!
This is really helpful. This reinforces things that I do sometimes without thinking and serves as a slap on the wrist of things I need to stop doing.
I focus on vision on a lot of my tanks and it helps to know how to trap scouts and what to look for
Glad I found this. I’m really interested in Lights, and scouting, but haven’t tried it because I wasn’t sure what to actually do! Plenty of really good information here. Thanks 👍🏻
You made me realize that I tend to get tunnel vision especially in my LT, thanks, definitely going to do my best to make use of this information.
I think I need to focus on map knowledge. I am well aware of the game's mechanics but I never know where the hell to go in tanks like the 12 t and WZ-132
One helpful resource are the map guides by O7 Gaming:
o7gaming.com/maps/
The guides don't cover every place that's worth going as a light tank, but it's a very helpful start.
Taugrim, is there any alternative for O7 Gaming guides? The site is expired :C
@@taugrim too bad, website is offline.
Thanks for that awesome video.
I went for the Scouts because I likes their speed/vision/mapcontrol and was so disappointed in the light tanks. However your video felt refreshing and I am looking forward to my next games.
With the AMX12 T it's good at spotting basically since the 12 T up the way to tier 10 you have identical gameplay
Paper armor, Autoloader, And fast so basically just do active scouting and pick on heavies
Well thats what i do but after the 12 T is the tank that is basically the 12 T but smaller turret....
if Your talking about BC 12 T well it still is like that
Typical french tactics
Great information! I just started playing last week and I was basically just sui-scouting and brawling. Great breakdown of what not to do, and what to do in order to help the team get the win instead of just going in for kills.
I just got back into tanks after 2 years. And thanks for this. I appreciate the insight. Some of these things are not intuitive and it helps.
Great lesson I think I’ve learned more in this video than anything I have ever seen before.
by far the best help I've seen since i started, I'm no where near as technical as you, but I love to play and now I'll look forward for more Schoolin', THANK YOU !
I know this is an old thread but this is a very well made video. I love the fact that you include some of your OWN mistakes. A lot of good players wont show those games. Lot to be learned from watching this...more than once.
Thank you! Great stuff for those of us still trying get at least above average. Glad I found your channel.
A great video tutorial. It is very helpful and insightful. It really opened my eyes up on how to play lights on a better level. Plus your polite demeanor was refreshing also, not knocking on people's mistakes with a sophomoric attitude. Subscribed.
Thank you for putting this together… sooo much to learn.
Thanks for this video. It really shined the light for me on a few, what seems to be, important aspects of being a teams scout.
Thanks for the content Taugrim. LT's are by far the most difficult to play.
I was looking to start using light tanks, searched for light tank guides: This is the first i found and it is excellent. Will put this into practice right away!
Thank you for your simple and clear video. I like the way you edited it and commented it.
Thanks for putting this online. I'm currently grinding some lights and this has helped me a lot. As an older player (51) I don't have the kind of situational awareness and quick decision making skills anymore that unicoms have, but at least I know now how to position, when and when not to flank, etc. The video is a gem. Great work!
every extensive explanation on how to drive a LT. good info and experienced shared. well done. and thanks. i'm not a pro, just not experienced enough to drive a higher tier LT. i started out with TD, then HT, and now MT. hope i can learned more about how to drive an LT.
Very nice guide! I haven't seen any of your other videos but I'll be checking them out. Very in depth, and useful to me even as an experienced player. Thankyou, subbed.
The work you put into this is so impressive. I can really appreciate the effort you put into this video.
It was a huge pain in the ass. I hope the finished product was worth it :)
Just subbed. You are new 2 me. Great content. I am really getting into playing lights. Keep up the good work and greeting from the Uk!
anthony howard if u like light tanks, then I will suggest u checking out Ilyas red plays yt Channel, it's focused on light tanks only, he's probably the best light tank driver I have ever seen
Thank you so much for the info.
I have only just started to try to be a good LT driver and this is a really good tutorial. Watching it in 2020 it is amazing to see just how much the maps have changed.
Love your channel just started the game like 2 weeks ago and you helped seal my interest in the game!
Holy shit, I'm glad to see a new video! It's been awhile, but it was worth the wait! :)
Really excellent stuff Taugrim. Thanks for sharing.
I enjoy the way you present, and also the lack of arrogance despite the obvious skill which you possess. You share some excellent knowledge. Thanks for sharing...
I like to play light tanks so much because they promote active and intense combat. This helped me on fixing my mistakes while playing lights. Thanks :D
Loved this. Excellent work Taugrim.
glad your doing vids again...I look forward every time, keep up good work!!!
Great video as always Taugrim, especially for somebody that plays mostly light tanks.
BTW, it's great when your personality comes through; makes for great/amusing content that players can relate too. For example, at the 12:20 mark, "Look at the E75, that's glorious, dude is....hahaha, full HP 10 seconds ago and now he's one-shotable." In situations like that, you can't help but laugh and enjoy watching a Tier 10 heavy get nuked.
Keep up the great work; learning a lot.
Excellent video. I still continue to revisit it periodically as I continue to try and increase my game play. Thanks!
Glad 2 see ur back! 👍
Very good video, a friend of mine always asks me how i play lights so well and honestly, i can just link him this video, i agree with every point you make.
Well Done!!! Great video. man and one of the best for light tanking. This should be watched by every noob I come across in a light tank.
Really nice guide. Great skill level with great strategic approach.
Wow, so much good information there. Thank you for all the work you put into this!
Wow, great video! Now, when I do something stupid in a light tank, I can think, "D'oh! Now I remember! Taugrim told me not to do that!" I've saved it in my library so I can watch it again.
I love your editin decision of jumping from game to game back and forward it kept me on attention
Glad to hear that. There was so much I wanted to cover but I didn't want to make the video any longer than it already is. 40 mins is a long watch.
Helpful advice that was very concise and to the point. Loved how you did not just show others making mistakes, but yourself as well. No matter how good someone is, they can always make a mistake. Throwing in your own shows people that you cannot do it perfectly every time. There is always a learning curve.
I found this video, and despite the long video i found it really helpful and enjoyable, I already have a few marks on a lot of my tanks but always looking to improve. Thanks for the video :)
Thank you for your insight. I am trying to get better in my lights.
Man I thought you quit,i'm so pleased to see this vid, keep it up
Jolly good guide! Expertly written and a great help to us average players to enjoy playing light tanks!
Great video, with very helpful tips ! Thank you.
Great guide really enjoyed it. I know they take a while to do especially this length but would love to see more.
Great guide dude. Keep up the good work!
Never played LT before. Had to watch this since I am going to try it out for the first time...soon. :) Thank you for all the information!
Hey!
Thanks lots for the video.
In addition to the great advice on playing lights, your video also provides lots of information on various locations which are good for tanks that have to operate "from a distance" like weakly-armored meds and tank destroyers.
Considering that my goals include learning to play lights *and* improving my understanding of TD play, watching your vid gave me a doubled benefit.
Wow, such a great job putting this together. Thank you for your time, I learned a LOT.
Thanks, comments like yours make the effort worthwhile.
I just spent 40 minutes watching a video and boi was it worth it
Seeing as light tanks are perhaps my favourite class to play but I still have some basic errors (like suiscouting) to iron out, this guide is outstanding. Thanks a bunch.
You're welcome, and I hope it helps :)
Great video mate, lots of explaining how and why...really helpful thanks.
So...
Don't expose yourself too much, go for quick peeks, don't risk engagements with bad trades, take easy kills, don't shoot unless you're sure it's a good idea, don't brawl if you're outnumbered
Some of the things I got, might give my AMX 12t a try today
This was very educational. thanks.
This is great. I've been an avid light tank driver from day one (basically I bought a Type 64 when I installed) and light tanks... HIT my wn8 so bad. But I LEARNT. Boy did I learn. The only slight piece of advice I would have added is when to time a right click / use momentum / circle strafe vulernable tanks.. and how to make people turn turrets... you talk about 70pkh momentum driving as a bad thing but it really will cause a flank to fall if done right... it's about timing and the tools for the job.. other than utilizing that toolset properly you covered everything. What is good is that I genuinely already worked all this out on my own. So greatly encouraged me with your correspondent convergent thinking
Thank's a lot for your guide. Light tanks are really fun tp play but they are as hard (to play) as they are fun. It took years for me to learn and progress on effective scouting. Now I use to say to my scouts mates "If you scout, don't shoot". Scouting was a hard job already, but now with the EBR it's just a nightmare. Ebr are total game break.
The EBRs are getting nerfed a bit. It's much needed.
Of the thousands of WoT videos I've watched over the years, this one easily makes top 10.
Thanks, that is very high praise :)
First time I watched your videos. Well done.
I enjoy light tanks, they are the most fun for me, with their mobility and view range advantages. My highest wn8s are in light tanks. I do much of what you say, but I should start doing a few things you do that I don't. Like pinging the map more often to get team support. Sometimes I forget to look at the map and get over run, so leaving early enough is good advice I don't always do. I'll use that spot on Pokorovka (SP?) at the base of the hill to get early lights and the mid ridge on Malinovka. There are other spots on a few maps that you didn't show that you can get early lights too. Good stuff :)
Thanks for this guide, it was very useful to me.
w0w! Totally opens up the game mechanics, I've never even pondered. I've mostly been TD, or brawler. I'm going to try scouting. Thank you.
Nice job. Really excellent content. Thank you.
Happy to see you back Taugrim :)
Me too :)
Thanks man .. just started getting into lights a bit more seriously .. this will help ..
Coming to this video as a player who has been playing off and on for the last 9 years. So much stuff that I still need to learn and relearn even all these years later.
Awesome, awesome guide. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Awesome so many good points covered thank you!!
this is a pretty good guide, seems like the main thing to learn in lights is check your greed at the battle q. I think i may dust off a couple of my abandoned lights and give them a go.
I love you man. Very high quality videos
Very very very helpful! Thank you so much!
Yippee you are back so glad dude
Wow this is a great video! Thank You!
Great job I play on WoT on console. I never really play in a light tank but wanting to try them out. This is a great video thank you!
Nice vid mate. In the point to the whole video ! I hope that it will help a lot of new LT drivers out there.
Interesting seeing LemmingRush displaying the same thinking in places, also thanks for a new bush location. And the AMX13 90 for his ditch hideout, will have to try that.
Thank you for the video man! I have been trying to improve my overall gameplay for some time now and am slowly learning the role of scout. (Without getting yelled at for being a potato) Appreciate all the tips. I will put a few of them to use right....now!
Excellent! Thank you for this :)
Great mate learned a lot...thanks for sharing
Such a great video. And still totally relevant.
Nice vid, I consider myself a competent player but there was definitely some stuff I learned here
Man, I wish this was required watching for anyone who wanted to play past a Tier III light. Excellent guide for both those who play lights and those who counter lights (I've been grinding primarily TDs and Light for the past year, so I see it from both sides)
Thanks, what you wrote is exactly why I put in the hours needed to create this video.
Really good stuff -- I've been playing console for 4 years now and the American light line (up to the Chaffee because that was all that was available back then) was the first grind I worked on and I was awful -- I wish there was something like this video back then. I'm at the HWK 12 on the German light Rheinmetall Panzerwagen line and it was only now that I finally got it pounded through my head the concepts you illustrate in this video -- finally realizing the role and benefits of spotting points.
I see so many suicide scouts on the line that I now almost always avoid any lights that follow my path in the opening phase of a match -- just to avoid detection and it doesn't make sense XP wise; even if it's less tactically advantageous, I'll take an alternate route to be of a better value to the team and if I'm able to properly navigate the map in a fashion that doesn't get me killed.
Keep up the good work!
Great guide - just the facts - I like your simple but effective communication style
Great content as usual. 40 minutes!!
Taugrim I've been following off and on since we played RIFT together in 2011, thrilled we have had similar taste in games over the years lol
Really great video nice explaination !
Great Video! Very useful information.
I like the way you point out your own mistakes as well as other players. Shows that everybody can make mistakes. Classy, well done.
I'm over 20k battles in and still learning. The game is richly complex :)
Absolutely outstanding video. Super impressed with your analysis and exclamation of tactics. I wish I could play 1/10th as good as you do. In real life I am terrible with directions/navigation and rely heavily upon my phone for guidance. In the game, even after seeing a map hundreds of times, I can’t seem to remember the key locations and therefore I am unable to use them properly.
Thanks for this video. I hope it will help me become a much better player.
3:30 First time in anyone's video that I hear them say Spot for the TDs or if you want ro hang back get in the right tank to do it... A TD. So many times set in a perfect killing position to have our spotters, the LTs and MTs head off to spot for the HTs or as I like to say; feed off the scraps from the HTs. Enjoyed your video, hope LT and MT players took notes.
