    When we had our rabbit in an outdoor hutch in the winter, we got a heated bowl to avoid the freezing problem. Probably not too practical or cost-effective since you have several hutches and you'd have to get heavy-duty outdoor extension cords (we had some laying around since our family is big on Christmas lights) and several of the bowls, but it saves you and the rabbits the trouble of clearing out ice.

    I understand that this video is a few years old by the time I'm reading this, but I would suggest having wired "window(s)" of sorts near the top of the full wooded enclosure. Rabbits need air flow, I would imagine if you were to breed rabbits in this cage they would make a nest in that full wooded half of that cage. This change will prevent ammonia buildup, along with drilling small holes on the bottom of the wood floors. Hope these changes make sense and I'm eager to see what you can create in the future.

  • @LightningBoltBunny
    @LightningBoltBunny Рік тому

    Tip: Change the wire, it can give bunnies sore hocks. And bottles are not natural, if you put a dish and a water bottle in there cage it's very much likely that they will use the dish more. And rabbits drink as much as a small dog, not only that they can get dehydrated from them.

    Hey dude so this is a really nice outdoor cage design and all and the cold and stuff can be easily masked by towels in the winter but if you’ve had rabbits than you should know that rabbits shouldn’t have wire flooring. No matter the size. They will get sore hocks and it will take multiple vet visits to “fix”. So you need to buy some towels and put them over the wire or replace the cage entirely.

    • @bboutdooradventures491
      @bboutdooradventures491  6 років тому

      Kylie Gilliam thanks for sharing you thoughts. I have raised hundreds of rabbits and tried several different flooring options. It is my professional opinion that wire bottom cages are by far the best option for flooring. I know that if done right there are other flooring options that work just fine. If you prefer to not use wire floors that is just fine. Even with this design it would be very easy to just make the floor solid. It is actually harder to make wire floors than wood floors but I feel it is worth the extra effort.

    • @kyliegilliam2647
      @kyliegilliam2647 6 років тому

      Benjamin Goodson I understand that this is your opinion I just fear your rabbit WILL get sore hocks. Maybe you’ve never taken them to the vet and that’s why you don’t know. I think that maybe you should...
      1) provide space off of the wire so they can avoid sore hocks themselves
      2) do some research on your rabbits before you post things like this and potentially harm you rabbits

    • @bboutdooradventures491
      @bboutdooradventures491  6 років тому

      Kylie Gilliam I always always always provide places for them to get off the wire. I have talked to several vets. And I have done a ton of research. And both solid floors and wire bottom cages work well for rabbits cages. If you prefer a solid bottom cage that will work just fine. If you want further information on the proper care rabbits go to Arba.net. (The America rabbit breeders association).

    It would cost less if you don't use those expensive hinges and latches. I just use 2 shòrt lengths of quarter inch rod for hinges like you often see used on bird houses and drill a downward sloping hole in the door frame and into the hutch where a 4 inch nail can be placed to lock the door

      I have not made a video on how to attach the legs. I have some cages where I have attached legs and have done some where I just put them on cinderblocks. If attaching legs I would just make a mark on the leg at the height I want them then add a block underneath the mark use the blocks to hold the cage at the right height and then attach legs to the cage.

      In my experience they do better in very cold than very hot. But they need to have a shelter to get out of the cold or heat. With the back room on this hutch they have done very well in both the heat and the cold.

    • @heatherhartman2274

      @@bboutdooradventures491 We had the same basic design for our hutch as well. We made sure to add a nesting box filled with hay, straw, and/or some rags in the enclosed part so our rabbit could both snuggle up and get warm and also engage in natural nesting behaviors. We also laid extra plywood over half of the open area to avoid her feet getting sore from standing on chicken wire. Our rabbit loved the winter, especially playing in the snow, and she would grow a big winter coat every year (shedded like crazy in the spring and fall). In the summer, we would freeze 2L bottles full of water and put them in there for her to lay next to when she felt too hot.

    Would it be possible to design the roof into planter box ? I am having a hard time to figure on the drainage system should I opted to have a 2 in 1 roof (Planter box cum roof). please advise if you have any ideas.

    • @bboutdooradventures491
      @bboutdooradventures491  7 років тому

      Jau Robert I don't think it would be two had to adapt the roof into a planter box. The first idea would be to place a triangle peace on top of the roof that levels the roof out then the drainage would go onto the roof and run off the back. This would effect the kids ability to lift up but if you wanted the kid to still lift it could be done.

The does even raise their babies in the cage together. But I do not recommend putting two bucks in it. Also what breed of rabbits do you have.

      +Hannah Slaven I raise many of rabbits and have been very successful in keeping them healthy. I have seen many pet owners and how they are taking care of their rabbits, I have been to many rabbit farms and seen their set up for rabbits. After much experience and trying several different options for flooring it is my professional opinion that the wire floor is a very good option for rabbits. You do need to make sure you have prober gage wire (preferably 14 gage but 16 gage wire works). You need to monitor them and provide resting pads. You need to keep the cage clean. I have seen more problems with hard floor bottoms than I have wire bottoms but either way can work .

      George Eaton I have a fair amount of experience in raising rabbits. I have made several mistakes and am not afraid to Admit it. One of the mistakes that I have learned from was building a rabbit hutch with wire flooring that was too thin. With proper flooring your rabbits are much less likely to get sore feet. Wire flooring that is too small of a gage of wire can hurt a rabbits feet. Since I switched to 14 to 16 gage wire for the floor I haven't had a rabbit get sore feet.

In the climate of the Caribbean, materials are damaged much faster, try to construct the hutch in PVC Panel and only have to change the hintches, the locks and the panel of wire.

      layla meek having raised a lot of rabbits I have come to prefer wire bottom cages. Rabbits also seem to like them better. But if you do not like wire bottom cages it would be easy enough to just put plywood on the entire bottom of the cage. I encourage modifying the plans to meet your own needs.

    • @bboutdooradventures491
      @bboutdooradventures491  4 роки тому

      L unan rabbits live inside? In nature they dig a hole in the ground and live in their burrows. I guess that could be considered inside. As humans have domesticated rabbits some people have raised them as pets and kept them in side but many pet owners do not keep rabbits in the house. We raise our rabbits for show rabbits, also for meat and fur. Inside would not be a good option for us. Their fur is much better if raised out side where it is cooler. This helps with both showing them and if we harvest the fur. I have kept several rabbits in the house and still do when it is needed but they do much better outside.

    I am building my own hutch and was wondering if you could use pressure treated wood for the bottom frame. It wouldn't seem likely for bunnys to be able to chew that wood when it's covered by a fine wire but I wanted to make sure.

    I have seen many comments on this video saying to switch to a solid floor. Yes, it is better on there feet. However can cause other health problems as urine can seep into the wood and cause bacteria and ammonia to collect, which will kill the rabbit. Also, an entire rabbit (not fixed) is impossible to litter box trained, especially bucks as they do spray. An area for them to rest is great, however large areas of wood flooring is very bad. Plus it isn't natural either as there feet will slide on it, which also cause problems with the feet. As long as they have a resting board and there nails are trimmed once a month, wire floors are not harmful to your rabbits. And just watch them carefully, if sore hocks is caught early, there will be more problems. You can patch them up with some medicine for pets and bandages.

      You are very welcome. I have tried all variations of housing for my rabbits. I have even had a rabbit die from using solid floor hutches, so we try using as little wood as possible in our new hutches.

    • @bboutdooradventures491
      @bboutdooradventures491  6 років тому +1

      Elu Niabi yes I no longer will use wood in my hutches either. It has taken me time to develop and learn. Wire cages with non wood resting pads.

    • @eluniabi5098
      @eluniabi5098 6 років тому

      I also try not using wood resting pads as many of my current rabbits like to use them as there "litter box" so to speak. I try to get ceramic tile for resting boards as I can easily rinse it off when needed, however this can get expensive if you have a lot of rabbits. But defiantly good in the long run as you don't have to replace them as often. The only thing I have to say with using tiles, though, is you have to watch your rabbits and make sure they aren't trying to chew on them. I've heard that rabbits can break there teeth on them, but luckily I haven't had this problem. If they would chew on them, then wooden resting boards are defiantly the way to go.

      Thank you, I agree with this so much. Everyone always tells me to use wood because wire will give them sore hocks, But I have a rabbit who had Urine scalding from his previous owner's wood flooring. Wire is the best so they aren't sitting in their droppings and pee. Wood flooring is defiantly a no-no option.

      There was a video, I don't remember which one, where the person built a cage that had both a wood bottom and a wire bottom so the rabbits could choose which they liked better. Believe it or not, during the summer months, the rabbits stayed on the wire. During the winter months, the rabbits stayed on the wood. The right type of wire doesn't hurt their feet. They usually build calluses like we do on our hands when we work with tools like shovels, etc. The rabbits like the wire because they can stay cool in summer from the ventilation it provides.

    • @ddhvn28

      @@katherinepearce4189 wow, such a naysayer. bunnies/rabbits can be outside. They do very well outside, in the wild and in enclosures. The correct type of wire does not hurt their feet. Many people raise bunnies/rabbits on wire with no trouble at all. If you feel that it is not ok, then obviously you have never been around an actual rabbit farm. Just a naysayer from the city who knows nothing about farming.

    • @ddhvn28
      @ddhvn28 4 роки тому +1

      @@katherinepearce4189 the rabbits don't get blisters or sores if using the correct type of wire. Breeding rabbits is done for a food source like raising chickens or pigs. I don't think you would approve of me eating a rescue pet bunny so raising my own is better. I would rather raise my own meat where I know the animals are treated humanely and knowing what is in their food, than buying from a store where the meat is loaded with growth hormones and raised in cramped unethical situations. Raising my own also allows me to give thanks to the bunny and to the Lord for the sacrifice needed to provide the meat for eating. If you watch videos of rabbits in wire bottom cages, they do not show any signs of being stressed. Those of us who raise rabbits for food make sure they are not stressed because it produces a better quality meat. Also, bunnies/rabbits have been let loose in the wild illegally. They are known as feral bunnies/rabbits. They still thrive in the wild. There is an entire island of feral bunnies/rabbits in Japan that are the same as the ones we raise for meat. They pretty much took over the island and now it is a tourist attraction. They do just fine outside. Also, if the rescue rabbits were culled and given to the local food bank, two problems would be solved. The rescue rabbit population would go down and the homeless would get fed. Win, win!

    • @ddhvn28
      @ddhvn28 4 роки тому +1

      @@katherinepearce4189 1. Irresponsible breeding, I agree should be avoided, but breeding responsibility with a purpose such as for food, for show, or to better develop a breed is perfectly fine. I fully support responsible breeding. The ones in the shelters should be given to the homeless for food. 2. You missed the point with referenceto the island. The topic was whether rabbits are ok outside. The rabbits on the island are not dying from exposure to the elements from being outside. They are dying due to over population and an unbalanced ecosystem. There are no natural predators on the island so the population has been left unchecked. Over population is what creates the issue of disease, injuries, and a lack of food. If there were predators on the island to keep the population in check, alot of those issues would go away. But again, that is not the point. The whole point is the outside thing. Rabbits do very well outside. They can't be exposed to sun for very long...but if they are in the shade and kept cool...they do fine. Winter, their fur keeps them warm. Rabbit fur is actually very warm. Angora rabbit fiber is in many cases warmer than sheep's wool. Even so, appropriate shelter is still needed for the rabbits, they can't just be left out in the elements. Rabbits need a way to get out of the rain and sun, etc. Wire bottom or solid bottom is personal preference. 3. Hygienic...good topic. Solid bottom enclosures that don't get moved like rabbit trackers do, soak up the urine into the dirt and/or concrete. That urine builds up and so do the ammonia levels. These can give the rabbit urine scald and or other breathing and lung issues. The poop can be cleaned up easily by scooping it out. And to keep the rabbit out of the poop, a person would have to scoop the poop every time the rabbit pooped. To clean the urine, the dirt would have to be shoveled out and replaced quite frequently. Rabbit trackers solve this problem by moving the enclosure everyday but wire on the bottom is still necessary to keep out predators. Snakes, however, still get in and eat the babies. And someone who farms for meat probably has about 50 or more rabbits. They would not want to have them in their house. I wouldn't. Some do use sheds but the rabbits are still off of the ground. When there are a large number of rabbits it is more sanitary to have the rabbits in wire bottom cages. Again, using the correct wire does not hurt them. You should visit a reputable, high quality rabbit farm and see for yourself that the rabbits are indeed ok. Responsible breeders take very good care of their rabbits even if in a wire bottom cage.

      @@katherinepearce4189 something just came to mind. Not too long ago, I watched a video of a women only village in Kenya. The people were walking barefoot in the scorching hot sand. How could they do that? If I were to stand on scorching hot sand barefoot, my feet would burn and I would feel every rock. So why doesn't it bother them? They have been walking barefoot in the scorching hot sand since they could walk. Their feet have toughened up and has built up a tolerance to it. My feet are very tender and have not had the same chance to toughen up against the scorching hot sand. Their feet have so they can walk barefoot in the scorching hot sand without issues. The same is true with the rabbits. The ones who are raised from birth on a wire bottom cage do just fine. Their bodies have built up a toughness to be able to handle it just like the people in Kenya on the scorching hot sand. Just as the people in Kenya are ok walking barefoot, so are the rabbits ok on a wire bottom. Their bodies adapt.

Give them a little area in the cage with wire so it can serve as a toilet. you"re rabbit will thank you, the rest of the cage can be wood flooring.

People with wood floors are going to litter box train them! PLEASE STOP bringing this up as a point. However, he has a place where the rabbits can get off the wire. Don't tell someone how to raise their children, don't tell someone how to raise their rabbits. Also there is a significant difference between raising a rabbit as a pet and raising one for meat.
