Never fired a gun myself, but I always had fast reactions. 'Taking your time' means (to me) a micro-pause that allows the conscious mind to give priority to the subconscious, which is faster. Once the switch is 'on,' you have to perfectly time your muscular reactions subconsciously, or you will fumble.
