This was my favorite episode of Cold Case. Jonathan Wesley is an underated actor, he nailed this role. Such a great show, and they wont release it on DVD because of all of the music licensing issues they would have to go through.
The song ,Backstabbers, was written by Billy Kelly. The Cold Case episode was based on the true story of his song and his murder by the female vocalist that first did the song. Billy tried to interest the club owner in his composition, but the owner wouldn't even look at it, because Billy had suggested it be recorded like a Motown song. So, Billy paid some musicians and was preparing to do the song when the guy walked in. The guy heard the song as they were recording it. Afterwards, Billy found out that his demo had been recorded by Motown. Billy was paid 10,000 dollars to keep quiet. But the song had been re- recorded with male singers. When the female vocalist heard it, she was enraged and even though Billy said they would make another record. She killed him. Later she found that Billy had been telling the truth, so she used the 10,000 dollars she found on him to pay for his funeral. Billy's murder went unsolved for years until detectives found out the truth. The O' Jay's recorded the song. When Motown found out the truth , they added Billy as the writer of the song. Royalties were paid to Billy's son. It was hushed up but a Cold Case writer found out about it and wrote a fictional story based on the truth. The O' Jay's didn't know. But Motown paid Billy's son back royalties and added Billy's name as songwriter. Backstabbers indeed.

I have been listening to this song for more than a half-century but only when I saw this episode did I realize what a beautiful piece of music The Backstabbers really is! I'm no musician, but I hear the music far differently than I used to because of this episode.
Am I the only one who thinks this verison of the song is better than the original? I mean the original is good but something about this one idk can't put my finger on it 🤔

My favorite part has got to be around 0:52-0:55 when the violin players start, gets me hyped.
Great ep and I always get chills when this scene plays. She has a great voice and is exceptional. Love this version just as much as the original.
