I just can't believe this. I recently decided to get back into 40k with 10th edition and the leviathan box. I started with 3rd edition Tyranid and decided this cover art would be my scheme. I could only find one post on reddit showing someone who'd done it. Then InfernalBrush made a video doing a Warrior in this scheme. That was already so helpful. Now you've made a video showing how you'd do it with more batch painting techniques to save on time. I cannot wait to get back from travelling to start making and painting this army. Thank you so so much for doing this. It is unbelievably helpful. Great video!
Man...I'm more of a Fantasy fan than 40K. But I gotta tell ya, this is the first time I've seen Tyranids as ACTUALLY TERRIFYING instead of a little silly looking. These are amazing!
I love this scheme! Other painters, like former 'Eavy Metal painter "Infernal Brush" you youtube also did a version of this although with a completely different approach. Its great to see both of you guys tackle this!
Yeah, I started this months ago when Leviathan came out, then I was sick for 2 months straight and thought about not finishing mine because he put his version out, but when I realised it was different enough I decided to finish it.
Nothing livens up deep blue/black armor like a gentle glaze of a bright red in the recesses. Absolutely fantastic take on this scheme - and by sacrificing just a little bit of detail, it can be done very swiftly with contrasts, too!
I remember that book art well, it's when I first started playing Warhammer in general. Funny thing is, I always thought that it would have made a bad color scheme compared to the actual paint examples they had in the book. Now I see all it takes is good color understanding and imagination. Nice work!
This is a awesome paintjob, and I think everyone loves the scheme but its just not a viable option to paint a whole horde army to this standard as it would take forever but it works great for a display piece. Its always great to see this level of painting and there are little tips and tricks you show that can be taken and used to quickly improve an army overall. Things such as bleeding the colours between sections to make them not look like a paint by numbers is great advice and that's something I really notice on most Tyranid schemes so I will probably attempt to do that more in the future.
Amazing paintjob! Such iconic artwork brought to life! Love the black bodies and the red "shading" between the carapace is such a cool detail! Adrian Smith truly set the tone in that era of 40k/fantasy. Would love you trying to replicate some of his chaos warrior artwork, should be pretty cool to build something menacing from the new slaves to darkness kits!
had a real bob ross moment with this one. you started adding blue and i thought you had ruined it. "theres no blue in the artwork" i though to myself... but no, you nailed it. fair play
This codex version had some really sweet schemes in. I love Shaun Murphy's dark gritty blue and red nids on the inside front cover at the top and the black skin/white carapace with red accents is an iconic look also (for example the warrior on page 25, Hive tyrant on 26 and warrior, zoanthrope and fex on page 27) Additionally they have the scheme from the cover art on page 29 on the right hand side third up from the bottom of the page. Not overly useful but listing chaos black, scab red and tentacle pink as the colours used (despite there being many more)
I am no match to you in terms of painting, and I have to admit this color scheme is one of the best I've seen on Tyranids. What I'm not a fan of is the yellow parts, I'd rather see them more dimmed or / and closer to orange. Definitely a good scheme to try myself in the future! Thx!
I feel as if this is the closest, and most well done version of this art work. It is a job well done. I personally was not attracted to this scheme, but now after seeing it on actual models, I love it.
i just started painting the leviathan box nids in this scheme although mine is blacker rather than blueish, orange claws and of course not as good lol. but im enjoying it and excited to see my army in this scheme. one thing though unsure what kind of base to use have them on
Sooo cool and sooo many memories of 3rd edition my first edition and I’ve only recently come back in end of 9th and 10th that scheme is incredible I wish I had the patience to do my splinter fleet this scheme god if we only had a pause button
i hope adrian has the same amazing feeling like when stan lee first saw one of his comics brought to life as a movie. pretty amazing really. i bet he never though anyone would be mad enough to try and paint them :P
Loved the video, Tyranids are that fun middle ground of Alien that you can keep it simple and it will look nice and detailed enough you can put as much effort as you can into. Also really excited for that book I've been waiting for the kickstarter sincs I read about it
I would prefer a straight line over the eyes instead of the uneven one, because it adds to the horror effect in being kind of unexpected on such an organic subject as a Tyranid. Wonderful video all in all!
I remember seeing that Codex way back when I was like 11 or 12 and thinking it was the coolest shit ever. In fact I think I still have a beaten up copy somewhere in the garage. Nice to see someone do it real justice!
16:00 Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin', all cool And all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school When a couple of guys who were up to no good Started making trouble in my neighborhood 😂
Hey trovarion, thank you for the awesome tutorial on that scheme, that's the colour-scheme that made me, twenty years ago, collect & paint 'nids, all sold now - lol. My apporach was way more simpler. Maybe I should get me a handful new 'nids for painting fun. As for other Codex-Cover-Schemes suggestions, I always liked the 7th Ed DeathGuard Codex Cover with that pale aquamarine Plaguemarine, with the bright pinkish fleshy parts. I know it's not something recently released and may not feed the algorithm xD
I am thinking of basing the colors for my NIds by the biome they came from. I mean if it comes from a ice biome I wouldn't think it would actually be red and black, but much more white and blue. Don't get me wrong your work is fabulous beyond what I can do.....for now! Heh. Seriously I love your vids.
Best Nids I've seen, and basically everyone has made his one version after Leviathan... What I'd really like to know or better, what I'd like to watch: A video with a talk about time. How long did those two models take you each, how has the increasing experience in the grimdark-videos on space marines changed your time needed, something like this. Would be real interesting to know!
I've been painting the combat patrol for the nids in the oldschool behemoth style like this as well... Looks like I'll need to be touching up everything!
... Oh fuck me, I need to switch up my paint scheme again. My fascination with the hobby began back in '98, but my very first game wasn't until in 2001, with a borrowed Tyranid army against the brand new Tau. And while it would be another decade before I started collecting my own Swarm, I could never settle on a colour scheme. I finally just went with a black-and-white-with-red-details, but I still wasn't quite satisfied... And now? Now, I have a perfect guide to the most iconic colour scheme in my mind. One that captures the grim dark feel of the Great Devourer. Thank you, and damn you; I have literally a thousand Gaunts to repaint now!
I've repainted my tyranids twice already. Glad that my current variation is black and red so maybe I can just add the blue-gray on top of the current skin without having to strip 300 models
Adrian Smith is the best! He has a small youtube channel where he paints/draws some amazing things! You should totally try and do a collab of some kind.
It would be cool to see a series of you painting miniatures from all the old box art. Like the old space hulk, death wing or maybe the old rogue trader harlequins.
Check out Miniature Painting Made Easy: www.kickstarter.com/projects/colorfulkrakenstudio/miniature-painting-made-easy-hardcover-books?ref=5g25v4
do you know if this is going to be available outside of kickstarter once released next year?
This paintjob really incapsulated the horror part of 40k that often is lost in the models... Thanks for the tutorial!
I cant even imagine a whole army with this scheme. Looks incredible.
Best rendition of Adrian Smith's art that I've seen. Best tyranids I've seen since Leviathan was released, too. Super cool stuff
Really impressive paint job, i loved that Tyranid art back in the day and seeing it properly realized is really inspiring
For me this is one of the best paintjobs I've ever seen.
Trovarion "i just added a main highlight and a bounce light to the teeth"...TO THE TEETH!!!! looking great, love the 3rd ed paint scheme
I just can't believe this. I recently decided to get back into 40k with 10th edition and the leviathan box. I started with 3rd edition Tyranid and decided this cover art would be my scheme. These are amazing!
Superb ,this color shema is my favorite,Adrian really appreciate this hommage !
Sehr schön. Hat mich umgehauen. Beeindruckendes Farbschema und fantastische Umsetzung.
realy like the patterns and textures on the paint job, i may have to rethink my colourescheme for my leviathan box
Damn, I love this look, a perfect blend of Darkness and RETRO for Warhammer 40K. I am just too inspired. I have to try it, great work
I think these are the best tyranids I have ever seen.
DAMN! It looks fantastic! I would love to see a whole army with this scheme...
Really cool, one of if not the best Tyrannid artworks and this paintjob does it justice to say the least!
Adrien Smith is my fav artist for Warhammer, his artwork is what made me dive into this hobby
I love this scheme! Other painters, like former 'Eavy Metal painter "Infernal Brush" you youtube also did a version of this although with a completely different approach. Its great to see both of you guys tackle this!

Thats is the best schemes i have seen for Tyranids i have seen so far!! 😮
I love this 3rd edition color scheme. One of my favourites of all time.
Great looking tyranids!
Straight up banger of a video, made even better with chris’s rizz
Nothing livens up deep blue/black armor like a gentle glaze of a bright red in the recesses. Absolutely fantastic take on this scheme - and by sacrificing just a little bit of detail, it can be done very swiftly with contrasts, too!
This was a masterclass in painting and out-takes. I want to know more!
This is the best Nid scheme I have ever seen
My son does Tyranids too and loved your video!
The dude is right. This is the best Tyranid paint scheme.
Absolute banger of a video! Can’t wait for the next one
this video... this is why i love watching your videos. looks fantastic

Adrian is a beast and this video too! More of these videos, which take inspiration from artwork!
Brilliantly done. Great video as well.
I really like that colour scheme and the blending is so good... Really makes them look alien and horrific!
Always a joy to watch you paint and experiment and seeing everything come together in the end.
Great job, love your style. I also have those Vallejo paints.
I see the Adrian Smith Nids cover I can only but upvote
Bloody awsome , best nid paint sceam I've seen and brilliantly excecuted.
had a real bob ross moment with this one. you started adding blue and i thought you had ruined it. "theres no blue in the artwork" i though to myself... but no, you nailed it. fair play
Easily my favourite scheme I’ve seen so far 😎👌

I'm actually building one of these right now 😃!
Wow amazing work! So gorgeous it’s very tempting to discard my sanity and attempt an army of these guys.
Amazing work!
Now make a speedpaint version of this scheme so we can actually paint en entire army without it taking years ;)
This color scheme is so badass, dark and grim, I love it. But for a whole army in a similar quality, nope 😂 fantastic work 👏
dude that is fantastic! I was just about to start attempting this myself but had no idea where to start, thanks!
Beautiful scheme and painting effects!
Yeeeeeeeeeees thank you!
I love that coloscheme and was looking for some good tutorial for it!
Thought about subscribing but then you busted out the Fresh Prince intro song at 16:00 min mark and the sold me. Great work!
I am no match to you in terms of painting, and I have to admit this color scheme is one of the best I've seen on Tyranids. What I'm not a fan of is the yellow parts, I'd rather see them more dimmed or / and closer to orange. Definitely a good scheme to try myself in the future! Thx!
I like taking inspiration from artworks like you did here, great stuff.
Knocked it out of the park, well done
Next level Tyranids, a masterclass in scary but stylish!👌
This is an astounding result!
I feel as if this is the closest, and most well done version of this art work. It is a job well done. I personally was not attracted to this scheme, but now after seeing it on actual models, I love it.

Also this is a fantastic video . Amazing looking tyranids!
All right dude, these look sick!
Loved the video, Tyranids are that fun middle ground of Alien that you can keep it simple and it will look nice and detailed enough you can put as much effort as you can into.
Also really excited for that book I've been waiting for the kickstarter sincs I read about it
Awesome paint job
That is one sick as hell result! Loved the video style :D
This was awesome, love your style. Want to try out this scheme now!
I really like how you did your carapace. I think ill mix and match to get what I want but that blue carapace is beautiful
Again, this is my favourite artwork of all time and this video is so juicy, I'll watch it again 😮
I would prefer a straight line over the eyes instead of the uneven one, because it adds to the horror effect in being kind of unexpected on such an organic subject as a Tyranid. Wonderful video all in all!
May I ask what blue gray shade colour was used? It looks amazing
i mixed abyssal darkness with eshin grey until i was happy with the result
Nice job. Thank you for the video
Gorgeous! Did the models justice 😍
Trovarion: comes to the table with these amazingly painted models
Me: "There's a lore accurate reason why my Orks are Lego bricks..."
Amazing seriously I love your content.
As always, love the content!!
Shading Black with red has become my new favorite thing to do. It just ends up looking so cool.
They look awesome, Dude!
Amazing work!😮👍🏽👍🏽
Just beautiful!!
Stunning, such a great piece of Tyranid art, I prefer your take with the hotter orange hues 🔥⚡
I remember seeing that Codex way back when I was like 11 or 12 and thinking it was the coolest shit ever. In fact I think I still have a beaten up copy somewhere in the garage. Nice to see someone do it real justice!

And all shootin' some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
😂
Infernal Brush.
Best Tyranid scheme so far 💥💥💥
Bring back a lot of memories. I stared in 2nd edition tyranids, but really played hard in 3rd editiin tyranids. I miss the 3rd edition style tyranids.
These look soo good! Absolutely love it 🙌👌
I'm so happy for this video

What a moment of nostalgia, great job mate ! But way to complex to paint an army i guess
