- A pair of homes in a Draper neighborhood were destroyed after the hillside they were built on gave way overnight, leading to the evacuation of nearby houses.

The city of draper, the engineers, the builder, and the developer should all be held liable. Everyone knows better than to build a house on sand. The developer probably shady af to build there to begin with. Why did the city grant the permits? They must've known it was possible to slide. The answer is greed, and maybe even crime.
Ooo the plot thickens. Such a drab little comment
Its fine to build on sand, but not a sand hillside that will wash away.
Greedy developers, cities, engineers all being paid under the table makes for a bad result. Wait till our big earthquake comes..
$$$$$$$$$$$$
Why do people buy house here???
Building permits should never have been issued for homes in that location.
they can be but pilings and water bars and straw waddles for erosion control and proper retaining walls none of that were there
@@lutomson3496 yes exactly
Retaining walls are over rated. Nothing will hold it back when that much soil wants to move.
@@lutomson3496 To expensive to do it right, a wall on top of sand doesnt work. The city blew it and this never should have been approved, cant fix stupid.
There is no helping the current situation. We can make sure that in the future homes are constructed properly and in safe places. That's all I'm saying. I
So sad people chose to build a neighborhood on a sandhill. That retaining wall should have never been approved, let alone the neighborhood.
Gotta build new homes somewhere. More and more ppl everyday. It should have been properly tho, that’s for sure.
It was obvious and several people have been trying to warn or stop people building on that mountain for years. It's not stable. Never had been.
So sad are the people that aren't too bright that buy them homes . LOL
Y’all see the CEO of the diesel brothers built this crazy nice mansion on a sandy hill and his stuff is starting to go 😆. Funny when it happens to rich people not normal people
Developers and councils are mostly to blame for poor zonings.
Years ago a RE tried to force a sale on me; house on a nice flat piece of land.
That is until I notice a creek running nearby, 100M, and the garden was water-soaked.
The flat road ends near the creek.
Nope, thank you very much.
I visited a friend who lived in one of the homes on the side on this hill, right on the edge like these. As I looked out the window I thought "Great view until this thing slides down the hill." This is pretty much exactly what I saw in my mind's eye.
It's only common knowledge but I guess some people just don't have it.
That is incredible! This raises questions about whether the city and developer were a bit careless in allowing building to go on at these sites.
Greed
Soils Engineer liable ? - would love to read his report.
“A bit”?!?!?! This is criminal, and disgusting. Give me a break on “a bit” careless.
35 years ago, when we lived in Alpine, engineers would not approve of homes being built all along that whole mountain. Something changed and we got all these homes on both sides of the point, and all these businesses (Silcon Slopes) and a little earthquake is all it will take to bring it all down.
I remember even as a kid looking up at houses built up on these kinds of sandy hills and thinking that looked dangerous. There were houses within my childhood neighborhood that had this same problem. How does this keep happening?
Greed and people buying homes don't look at the history and the area or lot and even then the builder may put crappy dirt in your yard it happened to my brother it took him along time to have his back yard not looking flooded
I couldn’t imagine living on anything less than an acre lol
People with money want what they want
💰
Stupidity and water intrusion. See Surfside.
Edge Homes...why am I NOT surprised?!
I was looking for this comment so I didn’t comment the same thing!!!
And they’re wondering “what went wrong” lol. What a great mystery this is haha
What do mean cring lady, grief for the material things lost? what about you still being alive? does your life not have any value?
Utah has a bad habit of approving land that shouldn't be built on, including old lake bed where the homes sink into the ground over time like in Farmington and around Utah lake, or the same issues in Harriman where houses are sliding down the hill. They know these land areas shouldn't be zoned for any building but do it anyway. It's been like this for decades. It's all about that money, the citys dont care about the environment, your safety, or the risks being taken to build where they shouldn't as long as they can collect your money. On top of all that, these new homes are built out of scrap materials used for old RC Willeys particle board couches, they are just stick and mud huts with windows and carpets built on flattened sand.
Well FEMA is actively training and already taking action to start declaring tons of land " flood zones " cuz climate change ! I've watched several of their training videos and such and they'll get who they want off where they want even going so far as making you uninsurable property and risk being far as 50/yrs away ! I'd be very careful where I buy land and read all small, small print !
I think there was similar issues back in the mid late 80’s. Houses were built on an old dump site out in/around west valley. Maybe someone with a better memory will come along.
go watch 60 minutes australia "construction crisis". more than 85 percent the apartment/condo building built in the last 30 years have major structural issues. I don't trust anything built around here that is NEW....unless it is very, very high end (where you know no corners were cut). if you buy a 10 million dollar house, a developer aint gonna be cutting corners. people with deep pockets are the ones they don't want to make enemies with. that's why townhomes all over utah look so damb cheap now. people that live there typically don't have the money to go fight some developer in court over getting a problem fixed.
Exactly - new homes are matchsticks with windows - beware!
Why would they allow a home to be built on a cliff like that and why would you buy one there. Very foolish on both counts.
Building homes in general, developers and construction industry is going bad, there is no regard about doing a good work and its all over this nation. And with those prices? I feel sorry for homeowners!
It's not shocking. There were legislators when that was going to be built that tried to stop them because they knew it was dangerous. But too many real estate lobbyists and legislators wanted it to continue because they were going to make money on it.
Intelligence would have said that these homes were going to slide off.
They’re building these homes way too fast.. Edge homes, And Ivory Homes!!
No lies I be driving by houses with no foundation or frame. Two weeks later the entire home is built.Hope know one was injured
What do mean cring lady, grief for the material things lost? what about you still being alive? does your life not have any value?
Sad, government failed them, should have said no to the developers regardless of how much they offered. Its not safe to build on the end of a cliff.
I can imagine it was just as risky to make such an astute observation, much like building on the edge of a cliff would be.
SAD THIER COMMON SENSE FAILED THEM ALL!!!
buyers were silly
@@lizgrem8542 Yep. Like the Californians who built on a dry lake bed and are surprised when it floods. What did you expect??? People are getting dumber everyday
What do mean cring lady, grief for the material things lost? what about you still being alive? does your life not have any value?
Building a home right on the side of a mountain. What could possibly go wrong? At some point a certain amount of common sense has to come into play. Yes, it's sad to see this happen. But if you're gonna live on the edge, sometimes things go south.
@@SageVishwamitra And the point is that ANY house built in a location like that is at risk of that happening. Especially new development built on a ravine like these homes were.
But the views, mate!
SMFH.
Exactly!!! I said the same thing regarding common sense! People are really scary with their thinking sometimes.. smh
What do mean cring lady, grief for the material things lost? what about you still being alive? does your life not have any value?
It's called South Mountain...now Going South Mountain..
This has been a problem for decades. I’ve been seeing this in the news since I was a kid & I’m in my 30s now. Yet ppl still build these unstable luxury homes. People never learn.
That's just crazy. Skilled craftsmen have retired over a dozen years ago and no one to learn from them to carry on the tradition of building quality homes. So sorry for these families....
It’s all these contractors just throwing up houses as fast as possible to make as much money as they can. I have been in houses that are less than a year old and there is massive cracks in the drywall. Don’t buy any houses that have been built in 2019 and newer. Same with townhomes. Those are probably the worst.
you can get cracks in drywall.....but it shouldn't happen right away. and it certainly shouldn't be all over the house.
Contractors only build where the government approves… The government is the problem
@@wasatchm Exactly settling and some cracks are normal even on a perfectly normal structurally sound house. We can hear our windows expand and contract in the heat/cold because they are aluminum framed and sometimes its very loud. It’s just normal
settling
The foolish man built his house upon the sand. Even babies in nursery’s know not to build there lol
Not just these homes We just moved out of rental in herriman where the whole patio and support post for the upper story was cracked and had already sank 3-6 inches. That home was less than a year old.
just curious. do you know who the homebuilder was?
@@wasatchm I don’t as I was just renting.
edge homes - "building homes on edge is our specialty"
I'm sorry for being off-topic....but the home-owners have the sweetest Cutest dog I've seen in a long time. Certainly amongst my top 5 cutest dogs ever. (Very distracting for me.)
Agree! He was adooooorable
They really can’t blame it on this winters very snowy season, if the homeowners have been evacuated since last October.
I’m sure the wet season was the push over the mountain, those problems were there first and people need to be held responsible.
The neighbors video are incredible.
It really is all about greed. By the original property owners that sold the land, the city of Draper, the builders, contractors, banks and the home owners. All greedy for one reason or another.
Well, the neighbor across the street just got a much better view. I can't imagine this helps the home values in this development, who would buy there now?
Never seen homes do this until the past 8 years
“They sure don’t build ‘em like they used to, right?” Thanks for commenting
Zero craftsmanship!
It happens in California where they built homes on cliffs made of sand.
@@kutie216 this is in Utah. To clarify. I’ve never seen new homes do this until the past 8 years
@@tvviewer4500 You’re right it is weird for it to happen to new homes. I’m curious to see who will be held liable for this because the insurance companies will probably, rightfully, go after whoever they can.
Even before the slide, can you imagine letting your kids or pets out to play? Such a dangerous cliff to live on.
Well, this is what you get hiring people that do shotty work for cheap. Its these developers that are making a fortune while cutting corners and putting homes in bad places. Theres a reason no one built any homes in some of these areas. Its because its a bad idea and it wouldn't be worth the money
Gives a new meaning to Edge Homes. I'm not surprised at all.
I value that you seized the opportunity
I don't know if she will watch this video but you know what's bigger than that house falling down that hill ? Your love will fit in a one bedroom just beautifully.
My Heart Breaks for The all of the people and families have lost their homes.
Her pup watching her cry, was trying to comfort her 💔
*Edge Homes, you can make this a win, win by doing what you're already doing!*
*_Edge Homes, thank you so far for what you been doing for your customers._*
The wise man built his house upon the rock...
Having more money than brains seems to be the attribute here.
Totally
I work in the industry and I would never buy a home from Edge. I’ve never seen more problems than their places. This is also the second location that Edge has had these same problems.
I'm feeling a lot of grief... at my decision to buy a house hanging off the side of a cliff
She’s lucky to be alive. It’s a good thing some thinking person forced the families to move out last fall.
Those are new homes. Ppl that inspect the ground before building should get fired and a massive lawsuit. Be those ppl paid 200k+ over what it's actually worth too
I’m really really REALLY confused with people that would trust having a gotdam house built on a cliff that will DEFINITELY erode! How can the developer be blamed alone when common sense should be used???!!!!
This is so common in real estate booms now that the dust is settling the lawsuits and issues will begin to arise
They’re doing this with everything in Utah. These homes are so carelessly built.. they look pretty sure.. but I wouldn’t be surprised if this happens a lot more often. So many built on literal cliffs of Draper and such. I was just in Utah in that area and felt terrified for most of those people.
How much notice did the two homes who were destroyed have to evacuate?
When you build on a mountain side-this is expected, it's just when. So very sad
And so begins the "blame game" and no one will accept responsibility
I'll bet that home had a beautiful view! Everyone wants to have a big house on the hill.
Comes with its own self burying coffin!
That's because they are lacking in the most important thing and money and temporary things will never give them what they truly need!!!
How ironic that the name of the company is called EDGE
A bunch of a holes in the comments! These people bought a home thinking
It was safe. Be nice people, none of you are engineers
I seem to remember a very ancient saying about NOT BUILDING YOUR HOUSE ON SAND!
Bible God's word says it!!
And yet so many leaders do anyway. (Including the church ones, as I recently found out.) If someone tells you not to ask questions and simply trust, that’s when you should REALLY be asking questions.
Edge is known for being shady, cutting corners, and poor workmanship 🤷🏼♂️
This looks like the end of the 1984 Poltergeist. Lol. Done w foam core n a Shop Vac!
I thought the same. As long as that creepy preacher doesn’t appear at your front door.
I know some people say, you're taking a big risk buying a home on a cliff like that. and I understand that. but at the same time, you should have a right as a home buyer to know that if the city and developer follow all the zoning and building ordinances and laws, you home will not have devastating issues like this. I wish KSL would get copies of some of the contracts that were signed between the developer and the home buyers.....and highlight what's in them. I think you would probably find that the developers often do everything they can to shift any liability for anything to the homeowner. this strategy is probably very common in many types of business transactions. now, how well that contract will hold up in court is another thing. because developers must show a certain amount of competence for their trade. once negligence has occured, then I don't know that what the contract between the 2 parties says will hold much weight. I am not a lawyer. but I do find these type of issues very interesting. again this is just a general observation as many facts of what happened here are still missing.
I think it is also a case of many wealthy people who really want to live there. So, they will throw money at it until they can develop the area. They might have brought in several people who advised against the area, or people who told them the retaining cost would be significantly more. But people probably wanted it done faster, and cheaper.
You should have enough common sense to know better than to build on unstable ground in areas not intended for housing. There is a reason those of us who have been here for generations before you showed up did not build their in the first place.
The houses on that side of the street next to those two homes are now worthless
I believe I read in a news article that those two homes needs to evacuate now to!!
Based upon the many homes that have experienced this and worse situations over the years (in counties in and around SLC, it becomes clear, SLC planners will give a permit to build anywhere regardless of safety,) common sense or sound design. Any fool who buys and builds on land that is clearly a "slippery zone" of ancient dirt on a wetable medium deserves this fiasco. The city engineers (that aren't really civil or ? engineers anymore) have allowed developers builders to construct houses on virtually anything/anywhere that is bare deserve to pay for this terrible loss of buyers. I believe its greedy cities wanting taxable sources rather than safety and stability. This will continue until developers are forced to be accountable when disasters like this happen every Spring
YEAH IT ALWAYS LEAD'S BACK TO MONEY AND GREED OVER HUMANITY.. THAT'S WHY THE UNIVERSE IS ALSO CRUMBLING!!!!
😂 remember ,just because you have a home with a veiw ,doesn't mean you can keep it okidoki😂❤
Homes where they shouldn't have been
This is a big Scam when building homes on hillsides with loose soil. Always build on flat quality soils, and Granite !!!. Land owners, and Builders are in it for the money building junk , just look at how cheap the materials are, when their building homes...Garbage !!!. The whole nieghood is a nightmare !!!.
It was the rain and the fact that they have no trees to hold the hill solid. Whether or not there was more to that I don’t know but there’s nothing in the ground to hold it together to begin with! Plant trees! If you have dirt and you Poor water in it the dirt will just slide off. Simple science.
I remember their story when they were forced to move out. I can't believe things got even worse for them
Where is this? Not everyone knows which state Draper is in.
Utah, about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City. KSL is local news so they don't see the need to repeat the state to their viewers.
I love seeing what happens to fools living on the edge of hills. Fools hills slide you would think people would have figured it out after hundreds of years of building. Haha waaaah
Builders are at fault. The products used are also far below par!!!!!
Could have been built out of titanium, still would have had the earth fall oit from under it. The dog survived, so there's a bright spot.
Lol no the engineers city and people who develop and approve these areas are to blame. Water and certain locations don’t mix
Greed kills is correct
2x4 exterior walls built 24 in. on center not well constructed at all.
And Engineers and planners approved these builds.
What did you do today, well my house slid away....jeez definitely praying for the families.
At least you weren't killed.
Geez! Please stay away from what’s left of your home unless you want to join what went down! I’m sorry they lost their homes yet I feel worse who lose a home in the terror of a tornado with no chance to empty, evacuate days or months ahead of time…. Stay safe out there!
They say they are looking as to why this happened --- seems quite simple to me, its called gravity.
All over California homes built on cliffs are collapsing. I was just talking about this with daughter this morning. The one place I will not buy or live in a home on a cliff or edge of mountain. Because of the rain we been getting after a very long, years long drought, weird weather I think this will be a problem.
Don't build so high on the benches, it can't take any more.
That's terrifying. So lucky they weren't inside? I feel bad for these people.
Why on Earth are houses being built on the edges of cliffs/ridges?
They need to preform soil compaction tests for the entire hillside.
Pretty much falls on the same reason I don’t build a treehouse, because one day that tree might topple over in a storm. It’s sad that this had to happen, but people need to realize that the joys of a beautiful view have extremely dangerous consequences whether they are from the homebuilder or mother nature.
There is an element of risk no matter where you build. Now, engineers will tell you they can mitigate just about any risk -- *_given enough money._* _That's_ the rub. At some point builders have to balance risk with cost, and it then becomes a _calculated_ risk. What happened here may not happen in that area for another 100 years; but it's going to happen. It's all a question of % chance over a given length of time.
Having said that, geologists will tell you plainly that developing on land that used to be shoreline or deep underwater at Lake Bonneville's high-water mark, especially in the vicinity of a major normal earthquake fault, is going to carry better-than-average risk; it's all a function of the cost of mitigation of that risk vs. a consumer's willingness to pay for it. That's where it pays to do your homework and not necessarily take the planning commission's conclusions at face value. They're making the same calculations of risk, but it invariably comes down to dollars and cents and who exactly is assuming the risk.
Homeowners will blame the builder, the builder will blame the engineers, the engineers will blame the Geological Survey, the Geological Survey will blame the planning commission, the planning commission will blame the builder, and so on and so forth. That's why there's insurance, and that's why there are courts. If I were the developer I'd take it in the chin and try to make the homebuyers whole; costly in the short run but it beats going out of business because no one trusts them to stand behind their product.
how do they even get insurance in a place like that
How many homes effected ???
I saw homes built on top of an area that was basically fill dirt in West Jordan about in the late 80’s. I can’t imagine that they haven’t had structural issues.
Perhaps getting advise from a structural engineer is wise when buying a home these days.
It's not nice to mess with mother nature..
anybody know if these houses were built on slabs or 3' deep foundations?
If they’re full basements I doubt the foundations were only 3’ deep lol
Slab on grade is pretty uncommon in Utah as well. Maybe in 55+ communities
These houses would have had basements. Problem is this area of the city is on the old beach of what was once Lake Bonneville (literally in comparison to a sandbar.) It looks solid but is indeed not bedrock. Very sad situation
That’s so terrifying praying for the family’s
Anyone want to bet money that the developers are long gone?
Anyone want to bet they do business under ten different names.
what state is draper in?
anyone can see that the ground was all fill. never was a viable building lot.
Pray for them
Unbelievable!
Don't buy houses on sandy hills. Always going down the hills. People never learn.
Scary
Heartbreaking 🙏🏾 prayers for the families 😔 I’m glad everyone is safe
What do mean cring lady, grief for the material things lost? what about you still being alive? does your life not have any value?
They're called 'edge homes' but need to change the name to 'sketchy a f homes"
Good god I am happy no one was in there. My heart dropped watching the house fall. Wendy Thompson. Wendy Thompson.
I remember when they had slides many slides about 40 years ago. I was surprised when they started building in some of these areas.
What state is this in???
Utah
We would drive by there all the time and just shake our heads at the insanity of building there. It just seems like common sense not to drop a massive house on the edge like that. Really really glad that the families had evacuated and that the collapse didn’t happen more suddenly, and I hope the city puts much, much better protections in place. (And if you have an unsettled gut feeling about a property, don’t buy it! I’m learning just how many corners get cut or safety measures get shrugged off by high-level decision makers, who then tell the end user that it’s all perfectly fine, and it’s seriously unnerving.)
Thank God that the homeowners weren't living in those houses. I feel so bad for them !!! 😢 hoping that insurance recovers all of their Financial losses.
off topic but that puppy is adorable
Where were the "soil consultants" on the build? Looks doubtful being built on steel beams would have mattered much perhaps. Too late now. Boils down to greed and ignorance.
What state??
Ut
It looks like directly from the “poltergeist “movie.
Give us a clue , where is this
it's a house, it's not like there were any family members in the home when it fell. It's not worth crying about...unless...you are going to be on TV and tears are the only emotion you know. How about being pragmatic and moving on with life. Why pay for something that no longer exists. Let the bank repo the home...LOL. Just remember to point down the hill.
Edge homes is reckless. Don't allow them to build in Draper anymore.
Grief? Your entire family is alive.
Yep,...could of been worse.😢
