Are they Ponies or Mini Horses?

- What is the difference between a pony and a mini horse? Their size of course!
Mini horses can be up to 38 inches tall to be registered with the AMHR and 34 inches tall to be registered with the AMHA. Any taller than 38 inches and they are considered a pony. In the United States, Shetland Ponies have been bred to be show horses and are no longer suitable for children, so many parents are using large mini horses in place of ponies. Riding miniature horses is fine as long as the mini horse is large and the child is small. It’s a shame Shetland ponies don’t look like Shetland ponies anymore! Before I made this video I thought I had mini horses and ponies. Turns out it’s just mini horses! I have been without a normal size horse for so long, my largest pony looks like a Clydesdale to me! Okay maybe a Friesian horse. If you are wanting to learn how to measure a mini horse, I hope this video helps. If you were wondering if my ponies were actually all minis….well, we all learned something today! #minihorse #pony #horse
there so tiny!! I always thought they were round 11 hands like a chunky Shetland size but they are SMALL!🐎
I have lost all sense of scale since I got out of big horses. I forget how small they are 😂
Apparently I have to remeasure my boy because I did not know that about measuring from where the mane ends. He is a mini, but I call him my Pygmy Thorougbred.
I love that! The TB part, not the having to remeasure. I have a friend who has a mini they refer to as their “Shire in the dryer”. 😁
@@roanyponyfarm I love it!

SAMD.OR❤❤🎉🎉😊😢😮
Very educational demo. Your miniature horses were all so willing...perhaps they were curious too.
Thank you! All the ponies (except Daisy) know I’m always carrying a pocket full of treats. They are all pretty willing once they figure out my “snacks for good behavior” formula 😁
incredibly beautiful horses😊
Thank you so much!! ☺️
@@roanyponyfarm ❤️❤️❤️
Aw you must do the goat 😂
Awww! I love that you asked about the goat! He’s actually living with my mom right now. After Daisy was born I had to shuffle everyone around (we were supposed to be moved before Princess foaled 🫤) and he was better off going to live with the goats at my mom’s house.

Valentine is very beautiful! Mini friesian would be awesome!
Thank you! A mini Friesian would be the only kind I could afford 😅
I love Pippa! She looks like my pony!
I love that! What color is your pony? Pippa is a silver bay, but at any moment can look dun, bay, or palomino! 😆
@@roanyponyfarm Haha! Really? Thats cute! Mine is silver/white. She's Three years old and I'm looking to breed her next year! 😁Her name Is Dolly Parton! 🤣
I love her name!!
@@roanyponyfarm Lol! Thanks! 🥰
I'm so happy to see Valentine ❤ 😊😊😊
@@francescaferriani4185 Thst makes me so happy! I’m trying to go slow with Val, introducing to my weirdness a little at a time! 😆
What happens when they outgrow their papers? Are they eligible for a different registry? They all did great with the measuring stick (and the Minion, LOL)! The measuring sticks often freak horses out.
Thank you! I was VERY surprised that I was able to get Valentine and the baby!
I’ve asked a few times on my Instagram with no real answer about Pippa outgrowing her papers. Since the mini horse registries are “height” not “breed” registries, once you are too tall you’re out. You can hardship from AMHA into AMHR (the up the 38 inch one) but it’s a lot of money. The AMHR is also the Shetland Pony Registry in the United States, so some ponies can be registered Shetlands too (Pippa is not). I spent hundreds getting Princess DNA tested and registered… it was money wasted ☹️
@roanyponyfarm That is interesting. Whether they're registered or not, your mini horses/ponies are beautiful and very sweet! 💕
@annjohnson8437 Thank you so much! 😊
I wouldn't know about US registries, but here in Australia under a lot of ours whether they are Miniature Pony or Horse they have height categories that they can "grow" into and be shown under.
There's AMHA (Aus mini horse Association) which has mini horse (34" or under for a mature animal), small horse (34 to 38") and little horse (38 to 42") categories. Each society recognises the different heights that Mini horses or mini ponies and American Shetlands may grow to.
I would've assumed the American registries would be similar and that they'd just move up into a different heights classification like small horse.
Hope it all works out.
They all did so well!! On their best behavior:)
They were! Even Valentine who is prone to hysteria over the smallest things, was fine with a “minion on a ladder” 😆
@@roanyponyfarm I was thinking that about valentine, in her head she’s like I can do this lol!
And she did! And then she got a snack 😜
