  • Beyond the rules that we all know and understand from the NBA rulebook, the NBA and its players and refs also go by a code of unwritten rules that are constantly being upheld. Here are some examples of unwritten rules of the NBA.

There is an exception when it comes to running up the score. If the opponent makes the mistake of trash-talking your star, like MJ for an example, it gives him free reign to go ham if they so desire.

My favorite story about trash talking had to do with John Stockton. One of the big stars got tired O John's team beating them, so he decided to really trash -talk John to see if he could take him off his game. The started after the opening tip-off, insulting John, demeaning him, laughing at John's mistakes, bragging about is own baskets that John couldn't defend. It didn't work. Stockton's team won anyway, and John played his usual high-quality game. After it was over, the star goes to Stockton and says, "How could you concentrate so well with all the trash-talking I was doing?" And Stockton looks at him wide-eyed and says, "Were you talking?" And he meant it...Stockton was so laser- focused that he was immune to trash-talk. He never heard it! The guy just stood there open-mouthed.

The Thunder/Lakers one wasn't terrible. The game was only 5 points. If Lakers inbound and score, it's a 1 possession game and they're playing the foul game. The steal and score sealed the game. It wasn't sealed before that. I get he could have run out the clock, but the Lakers could have also fouled him there forcing him to make freethrows. I don't blame him on that one. Russ is just a hothead.

    • @Kizdo69

Do you not realize how much you are reaching? There is no “if Lakers inbound and score” because once Oklahoma got the bull the Lakers don’t even have possession… And yes you’re right the Lakers could force him to make free throws but then they are still down 7 points with 2 seconds left on the clock it’s simply impossible for them to win there. I personally don’t really care for the unwritten “rule” I just noticed your logic wasn’t adding up at all

I was a ref at 16 for ball. I also did make-up calls. Sometimes I just don't have the angle guys. Two of us on an elementary/high-school court, we don't have the position sometimes.
Coaches at that level still understand make-up calls.

  • @timcarroll5644

To answer the question at the end of the video......yes, this garbage compromises the integrity of the game.
Star players get calls regular guys dont? There is NO integrity there. None.
Walking no calls have changed basketball so much that it isnt really basketball anymore.
    You want integrity?
Integrity is when what' is a foul the first 47 minutes of the game is still a foul with 3 seconds to go.
Integrity is when fouls are called on LeBron in the same way they are called on the g league call up at the end of the bench.

It's not a backcourt violation because the ball was being rebounded after Grant's shot. So you should stop trying just because the other team is losing?
That's BS. Dont want to be humiliated then play better.

Not a fan of the make up rule, at least for fouls. If someone gets away with a foul, sure call the same guy on a weak one later to even it out, but don't give a foul for something someone didn't do to make up for a non call on someone else, you could land someone in foul trouble or even fouled out at a crucial point in the game for your mistake.

A player can take 2 steps and then pivot as many times as they want, as long as it is the same leg. You counted those pivots as steps, but that is wrong.

The last unwritten thing is kind a horse s... It is normal people reaction. You feel guilty for missing/not reacting to a call and then try to make up for it. It has nothing to do with NBA or sports, its just how self conscious humans work.

Duck unwritten rules. Professionals want to act like babies when you have high school and college teams literally running up the score on every opponent they possibly can. If I was a coach I tell my team to play your game. Don’t worry about others fragile ego’s at the end of the day every league is statistics based and a few extra points, rebounds, etc. would help someone get paid if their contract is up. All numbers count the same and if the other teams have a problem with it and are embarrassed? Good, they should be they are pros who just got blown out, my team wouldn’t fall into bad tendencies because were coddling another team
