William Bernard (1904 - 1999): Concert Overture No 1: ‘Cairngorm’ (composed in 1945.)
Played by Simon Niemiński, recorded live in concert at St Mary’s Cathedral, Tokyo, at the International Organ Festival in Japan, 17th June 2016. (Part of a Scottish organ music programme, as requested by the IOFJ.)
Willie Bernard was a notable musical figure in Forfar, Angus, in Scotland. A pupil of Thomas Henry Collinson, the first organist of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh, he was a notable local music educator, and organist at Forfar Old Parish Church (now East and Old Parish Church) remarkably from 1932 to 1978, presiding over his beloved instrument, the wonderful 4-manual Forster and Andrews organ of 1900. I was fortunate to meet him, during the time I worked in Dundee in the 1990s.
This live concert audio is accompanied by photographs of the Mascioni organ of St Mary's Cathedral, Tokyo (all taken by me) and photos of the organ of Forfar Old Parish Church by Chris Bragg and 'SCHR', as published on the organ's National Pipe Organ Register page (www.npor.org.u....
