I was born in 1960. Some of my earliest memories are going car shopping with my mother and father and 5 year old brother in early 1964. As a 3 year old, along with my older brother, we tried to get my mother to buy a 64 cuda in gold with the black stripe. She said no, I'm a mother of two, so white with a red interior it was. That was April 64. She never bought another car. My younger brother still has it. 273 2 bbl, pushbutton 904. It has the Valiant emblem on the rear panel. The Barracuda fender emblems have the long tail on the A as opposed to the short tail on the 65.

Love those Dodge Rally Rims with 4.5 inch bolt circle. Original was 4 inch circle (with left-hand thread wheel bolts on left side of car, and right-hand on right side).
Love your videos Lou, good job as always, and a really cool car!!! Man that car is awesome, really digging the gold and black and that interior is fantastic!!! The engine looks like fine jewelry!!! Spectacular car!!!
I inherited a 65 Cuda a few years ago and have been replacing all the old worn parts, paint, etc. The original 273 was shot and I couldn't find a new one and went with a 318 withe Edelbrok 4 bbl. I drive it almost daily and get much admiration wherever I go. It is sad to me that this show car is not driven astray are FUN to drive and be seen in. I go to local car shows.
That's awesome Uri. Back in 1969 my fourth grade teacher drove a '65 Barracuda. It was yellow with gold interior and had a 273 four speed. I was already a Mopar fan as my dad drove a '68 Plymouth Fury.

My dad died when I was 16 and left me his 65 Barracuda. I drove it to high school during the late 70s. Hi Lou, What a beautiful car!! Very tastefully customized too - love the interior!! In Australia our '65 Valiant was based on the US one. They were built in Adelaide (my home town) & had the optional 273 V8 which came with floor shift & centre console. Tiger.
Hi back at you Lou, yes that's one beautiful Barracuda, it amazes me how much a really nice car can be improved so much, this car is beyond beautiful. I really don't think he could have done better. I liked the Barracuda so much I bought one in 1968. It was a Formula S with a 340 and 4 speed trany, dark blue with a black interior. With a little engine work ,heads, headers, bigger carb and 456 gears. It ran in the mid to hi 10s and still okay on the street. But it sure didn't look like this. Way over the top this one. 👍👍👍

I really love Mopar but these cars never grew on me but I do love what the eventually become the Cudas/Barracudas in the 70s are my favorite all time cars but I always have respect for car guys that are passionate about their cars and this man did a great job restoring his car.
I don't know what motor is in this Barracuda but I can tell you that when I was a kid here in Southern PA...there were quite a few first gen Barracuda Formula S cars with the little 273 Hyper-pak V8's running around here. They terrorized a hell of a lot of bigger displacement cars, with impunity. One of the great little motors to ever come out of Detroit.
Hi Frank, you are correct, the 273 Hypro was only offered in a few of these cars with the 4 speed, and from what my dad told me, it did very well against several other cars of it's time. He also told me he blew up 2 factory rear ends "under warranty" and he told me that when they put his third one in, they said "this is your last one under warranty" so that was defininitly the weak link in the powertrain. This car has a highly modified 408 stroker built brand out of a brand new 360 magnum block by Indy Cylinder Head, with all of the cam and head work, Russ was able to get 473hp out of this naturally aspirated small block, it now has the 727 Trans, and a Dana 60 with 3:55 gears. Fun car to drive..glad you enjoy the car.
@@mattclarkrealtorhoustongal2733 That's some great info Matt and thanks much for filling in the blanks. Yes on your Dad's car and that differential. I'm not positive but suspect that the A-bodies in the 63-67 range regardless of slant-6 or sporting the 273 option...all had some form of the in-house 7-1/4 rear end. They were never destined to handle much over 200HP or so. Not surprised the dealer told your Dad to tone it down or they'd rescind his 5/50 warranty. LOL That was more common back in the day than you'd think. That 360-turned-408 sounds great. Not that it matters but that Dana-60 gear choice is probably the 3:54. The 3.55 was a standard gear in the Chrysler built 8-3/4. Happy New Year Matt.
My childhood dream car. In 1965 my Dad brought me with him to the Plymouth dealership to look at the Fury and i saw the Baraccuda and beg him to buy it. He didn't. They gave me a brochure as a consolation prize. LOL
I went with my Dad in 1965 at age 10. A silver metallic Barracuda was in the showroom! He was considering a Valiant wagon or a 4 door. I begged and pleaded that we should buy the Cuda! WE DID!!! 273 auto Silver metallic paint (first year for metallic 2 choices gold or silver.) Optioned with a blue interior. paid 2,822. It became mom's car. I learned to drive in it. Worked on it, tune ups etc. It became mine in 1984. BUT best of all, I STILL HAVE IT. Garage kept. 54k miles. :) Oh, and double stripes to match the interior were optional from factory.
@@leekuchenreuther7176 that is great. We had similar experience with different results. Dad fell in love with a Dodge Coronet 500. It was ruby red with matching interior. Bucket seats and console, BUT in my mind it was not as cool as the Barracuda!!!! PS...It also became Mom's car and i was 11 years old. Lol
Are those laker pipes Lou? Looks like a sleeper apart from the pipes. Stripes look cool. This was a quasi performance car back in the day. Barracuda, wonder who came up with that name?
My own father drove a '65 Barracuda very briefly circa 1967. But he tended to trade in his cars very quickly, and I never had a chance to get too acquainted with it.
The 1964 paint scheme with the stripe was a single wide stripe with narrow, 3/8" pin stripes on either side of that. I see that you are missing the trunk lid support device, that you had to lift the lid just a bit to let the catch release, then you could drop the lid closed.
Oh, no it couldn't be! Or could it. M-Y CAR! I had this very same car; gold inside and out, 273 Commando. It was my 2nd car. That 273 WAS fortified let me tell you.

I worked for a Plymouth dealer when they came out, and drove a lot of them. They were fast but not real fast with that engine. In 1968 I bought a 68 340 Formula S. After putting 411s , headers, slickest and a holly on it , it ran in the mid 12s. They called it the Corvette killer. Lol.
I owned 3 -- a black 65 with smoky 273 2-bbl so tossed in a 318 and got rear-ended 2 days later. Next a copper 66 with another 273 but previous owner put a big-port Edelbrock & 4-bbl AFB on those small-port heads. Mixture separation at the intake gasket fer sure! Kept the intake manifold and put in a 340 with 2.02 valves just to match the port size. Eventually its fender cancer spread to other areas from environmental causes linked to road salt. Third one was a gold 65 for $900 from Texas where they don't use road salt. It had a 225 1-bbl slant six (but only 5 with compression). I sold it when I got married and bought something more sensible, a Chevy Vega (Crower cam, Offy manifold, 45DCOE, T-10...)
I knew a guy who had one just like that one but it was one with the 4-speed. His 12 year old brother drove it THRU the back of the garage. Beleave it or not it ONLT SCRATCHED the top. I wish i knew what happened to it.
Great film and story. So, Mr. Matt rides with his Daddy or I should say his Daddy rides with him! That reminds me of the song "Riding with Private Malone" sung by David Ball. Mr. Matt's Barracuda is a lot nicer than the one Mike Brewer had Ant Anstead build on "Wheeler Dealers". Ole Ant's time and talents are being wasted on that show!
nice mid-60s plymouth barracuda (A_Body similar to the dodge dart gt chassis setup...)..with an LA v8 engine based 408 c i stroker engine!! #1stGenMoparAbodyFTW

I wish I could fund/find/build a '66 Impala for my dad while he is still here. Great to see someone realize their dream!
Hi Mark W, Happy to read you appreciate the details of this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou

@@loucostabile BUT!!!! since he doesn't drive it, it would have been cool to see the sweet 273 sitting in there, it was a great little motor!
Awesome little Barracuda! Fantastic Lou!
Hi Hensley’s Hobbies
, Happy to read you this this car is "Awesome" :-) Lou
my first car was a white '65 Barracuda, slant six three speed manual transmission. I learned how to drive a clutch on this.

Nice :-)
Beautiful car 😍
Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing.
Gorgeous build. This is the car (or a '66) I've always wanted for a all aluminum Keith Black hemi.
High praise for this build :-)
WOW!
Glad to receive a "WOW!" from you :-)
@@loucostabile Well, you always show the best cars on the planet, Lou! Thanks for what you do!
This one is about the story for sure
Glad you enjoy the story of this one Doug :-)
Neat car! Almost bought a 1966 in this same color with a slant 6 for $900. I passed, but always liked it in this color.
Thank you for viewing and sharing your Barracuda story :-)
I really love Mopar but these cars never grew on me but I do love what the eventually become the Cudas/Barracudas in the 70s are my favorite all time cars but I always have respect for car guys that are passionate about their cars and this man did a great job restoring his car.
Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts.
Does it have a cam tho
Yes
Great job on restoration of this car but the sentimental value of it is probably tops all
Hi larry, Happy to read you enjoy this story of this car :-) Lou
Very nice Lou, and loving the stance.🤙
Hi Ed B, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
I don't know what motor is in this Barracuda but I can tell you that when I was a kid here in Southern PA...there were quite a few first gen Barracuda Formula S cars with the little 273 Hyper-pak V8's running around here. They terrorized a hell of a lot of bigger displacement cars, with impunity. One of the great little motors to ever come out of Detroit.
Hi Frank, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
@@loucostabile My pleasure Lou and keep up the great work with the vids. Always very entertaining. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Hope to see this car at the Cleveland Piston Show.
Hope you see this one soon :-)
😎 looking engine...
So well done :-)
My childhood dream car. In 1965 my Dad brought me with him to the Plymouth dealership to look at the Fury and i saw the Baraccuda and beg him to buy it. He didn't. They gave me a brochure as a consolation prize. LOL
Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing your story. P.S. Brochures are nice too.
54k miles. :)
Oh, and double stripes to match the interior were optional from factory.
Lol
Sharp Little Cuda!!
Hi Thomas, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Pop a Dart 340 in mine please! Thanks Lou.p.s. DO NOT break the rear window! If he wrecks it Dad will literally punch 🤛 him in the face.
Hi Curtis, I'll be careful with the back window :-) Lou
Nice
:-)
Are those laker pipes Lou? Looks like a sleeper apart from the pipes. Stripes look cool. This was a quasi performance car back in the day. Barracuda, wonder who came up with that name?
Hi ron, I'm not sure if they are laker pipes or not, however I agree with you, this build looks cool :-) Lou
😎 how you can create more storage space in the back of this...
The little trap door :-)
My own father drove a '65 Barracuda very briefly circa 1967. But he tended to trade in his cars very quickly, and I never had a chance to get too acquainted with it.

Nice car, Great story!!!!!!! .i think i git something in my eye.
Hi jeff snyder, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Lou
The 1964 paint scheme with the stripe was a single wide stripe with narrow, 3/8" pin stripes on either side of that. I see that you are missing the trunk lid support device, that you had to lift the lid just a bit to let the catch release, then you could drop the lid closed.
Thank you for sharing the details you enjoy :-)
I owned this same car right down the champagne 🍾 gold finish!! It was, though, the standard Barracuda, non-Formula S model.

Oh, no it couldn't be! Or could it. M-Y CAR! I had this very same car; gold inside and out, 273 Commando. It was my 2nd car. That 273 WAS fortified let me tell you.

Not everyone may know that the Barracuda came out about 2 weeks before the Mustang.
.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Lol.
Hi Rob Cbs, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Corvette Killer :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Thank you Lou, it really was a surprise it would be that quick with those few modifications. Good memories to.

It's worth alot to hin, but as an original car, it may not fetch what an original would get. But it's his car no doubt so make it like u want

I knew a guy who had one just like that one but it was one with the 4-speed. His 12 year old brother drove it THRU the back of the garage. Beleave it or not it ONLT SCRATCHED the top. I wish i knew what happened to it.
Hi Gilbert Nowack, WOW, that's quite an impressive story! Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
475 hp in a 65 barracuda. Who knew? Don’t break that rear glass!
:-) + :-0
Great film and story. So, Mr. Matt rides with his Daddy or I should say his Daddy rides with him! That reminds me of the song "Riding with Private Malone" sung by David Ball. Mr. Matt's Barracuda is a lot nicer than the one Mike Brewer had Ant Anstead build on "Wheeler Dealers". Ole Ant's time and talents are being wasted on that show!

1st for once. Whatever happened. Why did they stop making cars like this that oozed class?
Winner !
Thank the insane lawmakers that pass "safety" regulations.
Nice car but I always hate it when someone builds a Mopar and paints the engine bay black , Chrysler never did unless the car was black.
