Usually the bride leaves after the wedding, but here we are talking about a community where the groom goes to the bride's house! This custom is most distinct among the 'Khasi' community in Meghalaya. Here grooms go home more and stay there! This community is primarily a matriarchal society. That is why the bridegroom is seen off here in many places. In this community, girls have the first right over their parents' property. Here boys and girls are allowed to choose their favorite partner for marriage. Khasi community does not have dowry system which is really a matter of pride. The amazing thing is that the women of this community can divorce at any time according to their wish. The youngest daughter of the family has the biggest responsibility of the household and is the owner of the wealth of the household. Most of the people of this community live in Meghalaya. Some of them also live in Assam, Manipur and West Bengal. People of this community used to live in Myanmar and then this community migrated to East Assam and Meghalaya!
आमतौर पर दुल्हन शादी के बाद चली जाती है, लेकिन यहां हम एक ऐसे समुदाय की बात कर रहे हैं जहां दूल्हा दुल्हन के घर जाता है! यह रिवाज मेघालय के 'खासी' समुदाय में सबसे अलग है। यहां दूल्हे ज्यादा घर जाते हैं और वहीं रहते हैं! यह समुदाय मुख्य रूप से एक मातृसत्तात्मक समाज है। इसलिए यहां कई जगहों पर दूल्हा विदा नजर आता है। इस समुदाय में लड़कियों का अपने माता-पिता की संपत्ति पर पहला अधिकार होता है। यहां लड़के और लड़कियों को शादी के लिए अपना पसंदीदा साथी चुनने की अनुमति है। खासी समुदाय में दहेज प्रथा नहीं है जो वास्तव में गर्व की बात है। आश्चर्यजनक बात यह है कि इस समुदाय की महिलाएं अपनी मर्जी से कभी भी तलाक ले सकती हैं। परिवार की सबसे छोटी बेटी के पास घर की सबसे बड़ी जिम्मेदारी होती है और वह घर की संपत्ति की मालिक होती है। इस समुदाय के अधिकतर लोग मेघालय में रहते हैं। उनमें से कुछ असम, मणिपुर और पश्चिम बंगाल में भी रहते हैं। इस समुदाय के लोग म्यांमार में रहते थे और फिर यह समुदाय पूर्वी असम और मेघालय में चला गया!
