I think that anybody guilty of great qualities like meta-awareness or exploratory curiosity can't help but resonate within this, if they listen. Listen to Hitchens speak most anytime and I get the same sense of appreciation.
This is one of my favorite poems by one of my favorite poets. Yes, indeed, this was at a tribute to Christopher Hitchens, who was dying at the time, but watched the proceedings on the internet despite his cancer. I owe a great debt to Hitchens, for turning me on to some incredible writers, two of whom are P.G. Wodehouse and James Fenton.
+Craig Helms I agree. I've just bought a copy of James Fenton's "Introduction to English Poetry". Good stuff. I was familiar with Rushdie and Amis before. I only discovered Hitchens about 2001. Astonishing men, whose works I now collect. I found it sad what happened between Vidal and Hitchens, as I admire them both as writers very much. Wodehouse I've known since I was a kid. Always makes me laugh. Anyway, I posted the written version of 'The Skip' for friends on FB several weeks ago. Strangely, my spouse got a job as a bin-man just two days ago, when our recent neighbour gave up the job. Indeed, "You'd not believe the things you find on skips." It's a great poem. Cheers... 9ish.
I think Mr. Fenton is having a bit of fun with us when he uses at least three bald cliches in this poem. Perhaps it's his way of saying you don't appreciate your threadbare terms until somebody ambles by and takes them for his own. A clever example of literary recycling.
I think disgracing himself means either throwing up or shatting himself after the night of boozing. I couldn't find parkay either; it might mean 'parquet', which is a type of flooring. Anyway, he threw up or pooped himself, disgracefully, on something called a parkay.
Disgraced would be either throwing up or shatting himself, I reckon, after his night of boozing. I couldn't figure out parkay either; it might mean parquet, which is some type of flooring. Anyway, he was drunk enough to throw up or poop, disgracefully, on something.
As an autist I really resonated with this poem, I feel it described my masking tendencies perfectly.
It really makes a person think of his own life . Amazing.
I really dig it! Great poetry..very amusing..bit like Paul Muldoon..Imramm.
This is a very inspiring and vindicating poem. It makes me really want to live.
The part about waking up at dawn after a night of drinking... and then oh Jesus, it hits you is a very relatable feeling

This might be the greatest thing ever written. But what do I know. I'm just some guy.
I might take your view from the skip and leave mine laying about for someone else.

parkay is actually spelt par-kay and means 'geometricallly patterned wooden floorboard'
@@Marronboiss Hey, thanks for that!!!
