It helps you to understand the circuit's behavior when the input signal has small variations. It's also called center band model which stands for analyzing the behavior of the circuit without any source of power, just by itself. The parameters like input resistance, output resitance, gain voltage describe the behavior of the cirucit.
I believe that happens when BJT is in saturation in which BC and BE junction are both on. Otherwise, since we are assuming Forward Active mode, only BE is on and BC is cut off.

I think Eber's Moll Model should contain *two diodes* and *two current sources* sources
