I love that bunkai is now being taught. Coming from a Korean Karate background, I didn't even know it existed until recent years. Unfortunately, today people don't feel that traditional martial arts are effective. They think this way in the States as well. If trained properly TMA is very effective and has a lot more to offer most people than combat sports. There are plenty of areas to explore: kata, bunkai, oyo, dojo history, the history of the art, philosophy, mediation, competition, self-protection, and weaponry. The list goes on. You are not only a great martial artist but a great painter. I love that! My other art is writing fiction. This video has also made me hungry! Haha! Yes, responsibility is important. I'm careful about what I show on UA-cam. I edited out the targeting from a knife video I uploaded. I felt it was too dangerous to be shown to students I don't know and trust. There must be a code of conduct instilled in students. Without it, some will abuse the knowledge. Thank you for making this video. It's excellent food for thought and discussion!

By the time you put all that together, you are lying in a heap on the ground! Lol! I took several styles of martial arts during my lifetime, I started in Tae Kwon do and realized that after years of training, I could not use my hands very well. So, I took Shotokan and quickly found out that my body style was not cut out for it. Finally, I took Isshin Ryu (an Okinawan mix of styles) and found it really suited my body type and mindset. This was before MMA. We however trained in groundwork and submissions. It was a journey and I was much fitter at the time. I believe that people get the most benefit from training in traditional martial arts and don't fall for the mindset that their style is better than everyone elses. If you keep it simple and use the kata to retain your muscle memory and also understand the bunkai and practice applying them properly. Then you get a lot from training. At 62 years old with health issues, I try to use what I learned to stay limber and healthy. For self-defense, I try to stay aware and avoid putting myself in dumb situations and I carry my concealed handgun all the time now. Being an old white guy in America these days makes you a huge target. Very sad!

I love that bunkai is now being taught. Coming from a Korean Karate background, I didn't even know it existed until recent years. Unfortunately, today people don't feel that traditional martial arts are effective. They think this way in the States as well. If trained properly TMA is very effective and has a lot more to offer most people than combat sports. There are plenty of areas to explore: kata, bunkai, oyo, dojo history, the history of the art, philosophy, mediation, competition, self-protection, and weaponry. The list goes on. You are not only a great martial artist but a great painter. I love that! My other art is writing fiction. This video has also made me hungry! Haha! Yes, responsibility is important. I'm careful about what I show on UA-cam. I edited out the targeting from a knife video I uploaded. I felt it was too dangerous to be shown to students I don't know and trust. There must be a code of conduct instilled in students. Without it, some will abuse the knowledge. Thank you for making this video. It's excellent food for thought and discussion!

By the time you put all that together, you are lying in a heap on the ground! Lol! I took several styles of martial arts during my lifetime, I started in Tae Kwon do and realized that after years of training, I could not use my hands very well. So, I took Shotokan and quickly found out that my body style was not cut out for it. Finally, I took Isshin Ryu (an Okinawan mix of styles) and found it really suited my body type and mindset. This was before MMA. We however trained in groundwork and submissions. It was a journey and I was much fitter at the time. I believe that people get the most benefit from training in traditional martial arts and don't fall for the mindset that their style is better than everyone elses. If you keep it simple and use the kata to retain your muscle memory and also understand the bunkai and practice applying them properly. Then you get a lot from training. At 62 years old with health issues, I try to use what I learned to stay limber and healthy. For self-defense, I try to stay aware and avoid putting myself in dumb situations and I carry my concealed handgun all the time now. Being an old white guy in America these days makes you a huge target. Very sad!

Witzigerweise habe ich mir von einem okinawischen Großmeister sagen lassen, dass in seiner Philosophie des Budo KEIN Unterschied gemacht wird zwischen "combat sports" und "martial arts", da das eine ohne das andere nicht existieren kann...interessante Sichtweise, wie Ying und Yang.
