When I retire this year,I will have accumulated nearly 40,000 hrs operating D8’s,9’s,10’s and the beast D11R,my all time favorite is our new D9,I’ve operated dozers in some of the steepest ground,on mountain sides,rebuilding washouts,punching roads for logging,mining claims,reclamation projects,pushing wood chips,will miss the seat time,my body won’t though.
I've worked on just about every model of cat as a diesel mechanic. Did you ever run any of the cable blades, before hydraulics? Or was that before your time? I'm fixing to retire soon myself. The body is worn out,and Its difficult to do things nowadays.

Never drove a D1 or 3 but have driven D2, D4 D6 and once a D10. Comfort wise D10 all the way. If I buy one it will be a D2. Only have 35 acres to play on.
I remember seeing a video which stated that the D4 is the smallest 'dozer Cat currently has in production. IIRC, that was an official Caterpillar video.

It transpires that Queensland based Mearns Hire, who were established in 1965, have modified four of their Cat D11 models for their work which involves blade ploughing outback hardpan, cutting the roots off scrub, and re-seeding. To enable this, they take a D11R or N model, remove the standard 850hp (V8) engine, stretch out the chassis, making it longer to give them the extra space to shoe horn in a Cat 3512 (V12) engine taken from a giant Cat 785 dump truck. This configuration bumps the power up to an impressive 1250hp. The same D11 transmission is used, but they utilise the trucks torque converter and lock up clutch arrangement. They use the standard radiator for coolant, but install a secondary transmission oil cooler which is mounted up on top of the ROPS frame, it looks a bit odd, but it is necessary as they tend to run this beast in 2nd gear all day pulling the 10m wide blade plough.

However operators are still driving the equipment And my point was absolutely valid. I grew up farming. Before. I worked construction.... Komatsu dozers are nice...but you're smoking straight up weapons grade crack if you don't know that Caterpillar has been the benchmark set for dozers going back 100 years. There is a reason you see 5-10 Cat blades out in the wild to every 1 of Komatsu or a Deere

@johnnywad7728 one of the guys i work with at the mine has an old cable hoist blade dozer. I'm fairly certain it's a 6, but i don't recall for sure.
Spent a lot of time building access roads for high lines in an 8T with a cage. Those were some fun times.
Don't retire, come run my cable machine once in a while. We'll retire around the same time that Willie Nelson does.

D120 was a really good and productive dozer but had issues with coal mines, due to the fact that it would create diamonds while in idle and park.
