I’m 53 years old and this was by far the coolest hunting video I have EVER seen! I love the passion that Mutt’s and her family/team put into every aspect of the experience and the respect they have for the bears. As to the hunters- Loved to watch their experience together and the relationship they built w/ the outfitters! Nicely done across the board!
Fantastic movie. Mutts and Jack are the absolute best. To have them guide you into their world is truly spectacular. The thing that sets them apart is this is not their job this is their way of life. They have grown up in it, breathe it, respect it, and truly love it. They are raising their children in this wonderful world. To actually experience a trip like this is indescribable.
I'm an avid 52 year old lifetime hunter from Northern Alberta Canada. Raised on a farm, and absolutely live for the outdoors. AND this film is seriously THE best I've seen on UA-cam hands down. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing footage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the distinct pleasure of hunting with Mutts, Zach, their boys, and Todd in May 2018. I had goosebumps the whole time watching this and being able to relive the entire adventure. I could never have made this trip without a good friend Dave making it possible. I can never thank Dave enough for making this trip of a lifetime a reality. I realize now how incredibly lucky I was to be able to harvest two mature animals, both a brown and a black bear. You hear it over and over, but it is hard to express how close you feel to their family and the guides after hunting with them. They have an incredible family and a truly remarkable business. If this trip is on your bucket list and you can make it happen, I can't recommend it highly enough.
being a new hunter, the learning curve can be pretty steep, but seeing a film like this, just reinforces WHY I wanted to start hunting. Im not in it for the kill, Im in it for overall experience, if I get something, its just a bonus. Thank you for this film, well done from a FNG's perspective.
Mutts, I have seen many many hunting videos and televisions shows but this one had a totally different tone. So relaxing. Congratulations to you and your family on a life well lived and a truly touching filmed adventure.
Spectacular - country, wildlife, bears, hunt, friends, story, commentary, and film! So well done. I must go and will be sharing this film w my comrades. Wow.
One of the coolest videos I have ever seen. This is being sent to all my friends and family to watch. Incredible! Thank you for sharing. What a unique experience.
That's a wow video!! Great job to all . The care and respect for the critters and land is admirable. The thrill of the hunt perfectly captured. G Fischer 👏👍
Couple of the hunters used a lot of foul language and acted like boors . I'm glad the well-bellied man didn't hurt himself when he slipped but I couldn't help but chuckle. Thanks for leaving that in the final cut of the film.
Thank you for your kind comment! It is a wonderful life and I’m grateful every day…. I carry a Blaser R8 .416 REM Mag with a Swarovski 2.5-15x56 Z6i scope. The thumb hole stock is outstanding!
Surprisingly, a ‘surprise bear encounter’ is very uncommon due to the fact we are moving slow…and are very strategic where we sit. For us, bears are not aggressive in our view. They want to get away into the woods. We don’t carry a sidearm as we already have a rife in hand and would need to put it down to get a handgun pulled out. Also, in my view a handgun is a very inefficient weapon to neutralize a bear if needed-bear spray is far more effective in that close range situation. Over the last 25 years I have had very few charges….. most with sows and cubs in the fall as she tries to get them off the river. Many can be deterred ahead of time. Thanks for your question. Mutts.
Beautiful place to be. I notice the guide skins very well. Doesn't leave a lot of meat on the skins, that is important when its time the flesh the hide and also about the weight of the hide carrying it out. I will check out a bear hunt with her. If I had another life, I would like it up north. I have heard that bears that feed on salmon, stink like dead fish. I have no idea if that is true. I really have no desire to kill a bear, any bear whether Brown, black or polar. But I would like to kill a moose. I was going to hunt with Jim Shockey, but ended up going to Afghanistan for a few years. Now at 63, I think I am a bit old to haul a moose out of the woods. Great video, I will check out your others.
Excellent hunt fellas. Congratulations on 4 beautiful bears, and also a fantastic wolf. Mutts, you seem like a very passionate guide. And that’s awesome. ❤ My question, is what kind of bolt gun was Matt? using that had all that fancy engraving on the receiver. That gun looked marvelous!
@@glacierguidesinc.3117 You’re very welcome. The whole video was fantastic. The scenery there, I’m sure the video didn’t do it justice. Alaska is a dream of mine. Not necessarily to hunt, which would be amazing, but just to see it in person and experience the beauty of it. One day!! And a Blaser makes sense! Thank you.
I was a logger on this island for Alaska pulp they were going to fire me at one time for exploring bear dens because the wolf's use the dens to rear there pups got a lot of good picture's of inside the dens I remember the outfitters camp outside rowingbay
I haves lived In Alaska 45 years, I have hunted moose, caribou, Dall sheep up here, never would kill a bear up here for a hide! Any longtime Alaskan knows the coastal salmon eating bears are full of worms! Meat is nasty! Not real hunting either along our coastal streams! Oh I also live along southeast AK panhandle!
After watching the Gritty Guys hunt bears and how much they love the meat, it’s sad to see the bear skinned for its hide and the meat foregone. I understand brown and Grizzly is awful and I understand its waste. But that’s not the case with black bear. Trophy hunting…not for me.
Gary, Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Conservation hunting has many faces but hunting is hunting and selecting older “Trophy” males is still hunting. Poaching we can all agree is no good. Sometimes people will confuse poaching with trophy hunting. Fall black bear or brown bear meat has a strong fish taste. Fall black bear meat It’s like eating anchovies and exhaling. Trust me we have tried. Spring black bear or bears in the fall only eating berries is much different. “Trophy” hunting in selecting older age class males is the best part of the conservation based game management model. The meat is never truly wasted…it’s a wild world. ADF&G only requires meat salvage in the spring for these reasons.
Gary, I’m glad you appreciate the bear hunts we do at GRITTY. And although bear meat can be absolutely delicious; not all bear meat tastes the same-not even close. I’ve taken many bears on POW Island and in SE Alaska and the meat from a coastal black bear that consumes vast amounts of fish tastes awful. Hank Shaw (wild game chef) perfectly described the flavor of Coastal black bear meat when he said “it tastes like the ocean at low tide.” Omnivores taste like what they eat-mountain bears eat blueberries and that’s what they taste like. These KUIU bears eat dead salmon-and they taste like it too. As stated by Glacier, there are many conservation-oriented reasons to hunt coastal black bears. And nothing in nature goes to waste. And as a person with a house full of bear furs, I think it’s hard to understate the comfort and usefulness of a great skin-it’s a fully renewable resource that did not require a modern factory, chemicals and machinery to produce. My kids curl up on bear furs and watch movies with their friends. And then there is the experience of hunting itself-there’s an intangible value in the pursuit of hunting that changes you with every experience. I wish coastal black bear meat was more edible though… I totally understand your mixed emotions on the matter. Thanks again for watching our films. 🙏🏼
Add pork or deer meat little cranberry double the honey garlic you can mask it some what iv hunted bears all my life on the coast of bc nothing beats a fall mountain bear in the blueberry patch but you can mask some tastes if you put the effort in

Wow, great video, I watch a ton of hunting videos and this has to be one of the very best. Wonderful family and service they provide.
I hunted with her father in 1994 and shot a nice brown bear, she was about 10 years old. Quality outfit and great family.

You're often really close to the brush. How do you prepare for a surprise bear encounter such as a charge? Do you carry a sidearm?

Absolutely
How is the meat on these coastal fish-eater bear?
In the spring it’s not bad when they move on to the grass. Now the fall it tastes like bad fish.
