Thanks for a great Rory reaction. Now that you know him I hope that you'll continue exploring his vast and diverse catalogue of music. Rory was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and an outstanding songwriter with a wonderfully unique vocal style. He loved, played and lived the blues, and could also rock it like no one else. Blues, rock, jazz, western and a bit of funk, Rory put his unique style to it all and in my opinion, he was beyond compare. Suggest you check out the studio versions of "In Your Town" and "Cradle Rock", which both sound like they could be live. Also "Walk On Hot Coals", audio version (the video version is incomplete) from Irish Tour '74 is mind-bending. Truth is, all of his stuff is amazing. Rory is a musical journey that shouldn't be missed. Hope you keep on...

My dad seen Rory a load of times. Rory turned down a place in the rolling stones at some point. He was one of the most humble people that you could ever meet. According to rumour, Jimi hendrix was asked what is it like to be the best guitar player in the world, he said go ask Rory Gallagher. Lucile was bb Kings bit on the side😁

Thank you! Rory was amazing-played blues, rock, and folk on electric guitar, acoustic, electric sitar, harmonica, and sax. One of the all-time best slide players. His catalog is extensive, so you might want to check out some of his other pieces. We lost him much too early in 1995 at the age of 47 after a chest infection following a successful liver transplant. Oh, and Rory was well known for his extremely beat up Stratocaster. He used this older Telecaster for slide work. Rory was voted Melody Maker International Guitarist of the Year 1972, beating Clapton, Hendrix & Beck at the time. He was never interested in compromising his musical vision so never released a single. Check out his first band Taste at the Isle of Wight 1970 "Sinner Boy" for an example of his chops at 22 years old.

@@dawnmoore4329 rory bought his strat in 1963 and kept playing it almost non stop until he passed away. He changed the neck at some point cuz it got damp with all the sweat and humidity, but was relieved to change it back to the old one when it dried out.

@@donallmccrudden4812 , yes, that Strat was his constant companion his whole life after it had been stolen in 1966 and tossed into a ditch by the thieves when it became too hot for them to keep. The theft of this guitar was aired on Irish TV, making it impossible for the guitar to be resold or pawned. Pickups were changed and the whammy bar broken off and never replaced among some of the changes the guitar saw over the years. With most of its finish totally gone, the back of the guitar even has the blue from his jeans rubbed into the wood.

This gig was televised live on March 2nd 1976 - Rory's 28th Birthday. Shepherds Bush. London.

Saw Rory many times - this was from the Old Grey Whistle Test - the old rock music show on the BBC at a time when there was only 3 tv stations in Britain- he was a huge rock star at the time- sell out concerts always- did about 26 tours of the States - would not conform to popularity- was NOT interested in being a ‘marketed’ star. Though he nearly ended up with the Stones and played with then in the studio in Holland - Mick wanted him and Kieth was wasted on drugs (Rory was very anti drugs) - Rory left for a tour of Japan - it might be that ‘Start me up’ riff is from Rory.

Excellent reaction! Now that you've found Rory I hope you'll react to more of his music in the future. This performance was, as he said, an adjustment on an old Bo Carter number - he also mentioned in interview that he 'had to rewrite some of the lyrics because the original was slightly pornographic'!
As others have mentioned Rory was accomplished in a wide variety of styles, including some wonderful acoustic work. He recorded 11 studio and 3 live albums in his solo career, selling over 30 million albums worldwide, despite refusing to release singles or compromise his music in any way to make it more 'radio friendly'. He also recorded 2 studio albums with his first band 'Taste', and 2 live albums were released (without Rory's permission) after the band broke up.
To add to the recommendations in other comments, may I add 'Bullfrog Blues' from this Whistle Test show, 'Calling Card' and 'Pistol Slapper Blues/Barley & Grape Rag' from Hammersmith 1977, and 'I Wonder Who' and 'Shadow Play' from Belfast 1984, all on YT.
PS As a Canadian you will be familiar with Rush - here's Alex Lifeson talking about Rory, as a musician and as a person
