Maybe because I’m 47 now, and I’m from the 80’s metal mold, but the DiMarzio Super Distortion is my favorite metal pickup.
I think it's one of the best aftermarket bridge pickups for rock period. It's been around 48 years now.
Congrats on this great find ! These old school super-strats def need more love ! They are truly underrated guitars in my opinion.
I am a U.S. Postal worker in New York State, thank you for the shout out!
That package might hold some sort of tape-usage record.
🤣🤣🤣
I’ve seen worse. Customs guys always have a field day seeing packages wrapped in rolls of tape like that for oblivious reasons.
I love 80’s guitars they were so good. I have 6 of various makes and models. To me the mojo is worth way more then the money I paid.
5:21 Phil almost blinked out of existence
Brian Olmeda lmao 😂
5:21 confirmation Phil is a robot
5:21 Phil.exe has stopped working
I have been looking for the same guitar, however with the BC Rich snakeskin they did in the later 80's, that was my first real guitar. I traded it off back in 2000s, regretted it ever since.
Bought an Epiphone Les Paul on ebay which arrived just wrapped in a single layer of bubble wrap. No case or box, just one layer of wrap! Amazingly it was absolutely fine.
This is funny, I woke up and was lying in my bed wondering about which super strat I would want to own and I started thinking about options like LTDs, Jacksons and Ibanez. And I got some fond memories of weird guitars I've owned, like Bc Rich..
And the first thing I see when I start my computer is this video.
Congratz to a great guitar Phil!
Ah those crazy Canucks!!!!
Oh wait, I'm one. :-)
Crazy shipping! I was just restringing my ‘87 B.C. Rich STIII (w/ factory red python snake skin top graphics - hey, it was the 80’s) (I bought it in ‘88) when this video popped up. (Not a single crack on mine.)
The late 70s bich and mockingbird were among the most beautiful high-end guitars ever imo. They used exotic woods, complex electronics, and share little with 80s and later bc rich. Sad to see them go.
Dude, BC Rich are still around. Unless they died again due to Covid and I’m not aware of that fact…
@@taimaishu-nao1922 yeah, but they're nothing like they used to be.
Remley the original BC Rich guitars & basses were made in LA California ( ElMonte during the 70’s & 80’s ) . At the end of the 80’s Bernie Rico ( founder of the company ) licensed the name to Class Axe to produce the imports then he licensed the rights to the USA made guitars to them and production was moved from California to Warren NJ where Class Axe was headquartered . Almost everything Class Axe made was left over stock from the BCR LA shop . Bernie Rico then took back the company & rights in 93 and production was moved back to California .
Remley the bass in my profile pic is a 81 BC Rich Eagle USA handmade ( when they were truly made by hand ) No machines other than a band saw to ruff cut the body and neck blank , the rest was done by hand with a knife . I’ll say this I’ve played many of vintage Fender p basses and Squires and it will blow them away . I own a few vintage USA handmade BCR basses and they all are great players with incredible tone . The 70’s to mid 80’s USA stuff is some of the best made guitars and basses ever made . People think that just the metal and rock guys from the 80’s played them but back in the 70’s into the 80’s a lot of R&B guys , funk and Jazz bass players used them like Jerome Preston . The NJ stood for Nagoya Japan where the original NJ series import guitars and basses were made .
Got a 2008 mockingbird classic exotic koa, and love it!
DUDE, that is as cool as it gets!!! I have a PINK Warlock. I also have an older U-Series Mockingbird that is the nicest guitar I've ever played.
BC Rich guitars are awesome!!!
What a great guitar. I've recently gotten into collecting '84 - '85 Aria Pro II guitars and I'm having a blast.
It's the Bumble Bee! Glad they didn't put new holes on headstock for tuners.
Wow I had that guitar back in the day it was blue I miss that guitar
I picked up an arch top Mockingbird and absolutely love it! A/B it against a 90’s Gibson Les Paul the time was almost exact. I always loved the cool body shapes.
I've had a few 80's STIII's and they all played great. If I'm remembering correctly they all had big slabs of rosewood for the fingerboard - thicker than I normally see on other guitars. Some of them came with floyds and others had an Ibanez Edge. I can't tell in the video which you have.
Just reminds me of cc deville ,all the poison videos I saw cc playing was a bc rich
i had a bronze series warlock that same taxi 🚕🚖
yellow
played like a million dollar
axe
My 2 BC Rich’s have the most comfortable necks! Especially my cheap Warlock bronze. I like it’s neck better than both my Les Pauls.
Do a video on the best ways to pack a guitar for shipping!
Splendid guitar.
Phil you were plug into a boss katana mk2? it sounded really good
great switching system
This thing actually sounds really good!
I have the same guitar in hot pink! Mine is all original because I bought it new.
I had a white one, regret getting rid of it
I wanna get one of those and play blues on it 👍🏼
Poison baby!
Love it. I want one!
It reminds me of the first guitar i've bought before I sell n replace with MIM strat
I had one of these in red crackle with a reverse headstock. Too young to know about how rare it was and sold it for nothing
My first guitar was ALMOST a Mockingbird.
I wouldn’t be thanking anyone for 31 day shipping. During lockdown I bought a guitar on a Friday, delivered on Monday. Shipped from Spain arrived in California.
great video! informational yet entertaining... keep it up!
Shout out to the postal workers!
pretty sure the purpose of the newspaper in the case is to keep it from clunking around inside the case.
Sounds great
I had an electric guitar similar to that design and that shade of yellow in 1990. It was used. Can't remember the brand because I've been through so many guitars. Could've been a BC Rich
Wait, so why do you need to put on better tuners when it has a locking nut?
The amp sounded great I thought it was a high gain Marshall tube amp.
great guitars
I have a custom BC Rich I would love for you to look at. I’m going to sell it and I am curious your thoughts on it
You should review a sterling Majesty
I wish I could afford all the guitars PK purchases.
Am I the only one who thought "Daaaamn thats a sharp looking case!"
I got a guitar from a major company about a month ago. guitar only. It came packed in a cardboard box and stuffed with bubble wrap and brown paper. Lots of brown paper. All it would take would take is one hole in the box and the guitar would be done for. Poor shipping on the part of the big company.
Do all guitars with bolt-on necks get those hairline cracks? I'm embarrassed to say that I've never noticed them before, but after watching this video, I found those very same kind of cracks on my Charvel . Should I be worried about them?
Hi James, thank you for asking it reminded me to ad a link to my video about neck cracks. ua-cam.com/video/tIY76tdkpfk/v-deo.html
@@PhillipMcKnight Thanks, Phil. You're the man!!
Ive always liked older B.C. Rich superstrats. But god do i not get along with 95% of their catalog lol. I like Vs alot but their Jr. V feels off. But the speed V stealths, and gunslingers are on par with their comparable jacksons and ESPs but theyre also the less common models
?Hey Phil, can I send you some photos of my STIII?
I’m trying to figure out some BC Rich late 80’s history and dating methods.
To be more specific, which brand of Floyd Rose did they use first, which tuners, etc.
The serial numbers on the neck plate are pretty much useless, but there should be numbers on the neck, and in the body neck pocket area, I’m curious what we can tell from those?
Maybe there’s a method that can be determined to figure out early to later 86-89’?
Thanks!
TheStacanova I have a Warlock that I was trying to date so I wrote to BC Rich. They don’t have records dating back that far but the closest the guy could guess was some time in the 80s
Allison Holmes Hey Allison, this is what I’ve managed to figure out, so far, with a good deal of confidence, about BC Rich dating.
Neck-thru USA 70-80’s BC Rich’s had consistent serial numbers with the first 2 being the year, however they were about 3 years ahead of schedule, so ones that started with “85” were more likely made in 82’ and so on.
Pickups & pots can usually narrow this down.
USA made 80’s Bolt on necks.
ST III was 1st listed in the 1986 BC Rich catalogue, it is the only Bolt on model listed (if this design or any other bolt on models were made prior to this, it was an “off menu” item).
Wayne Charvel was also working for BC Rich at this time as a “Co-Design Engineering”, I assume he was brought on to help launch this new “Bolt on series”.
1986 models usually have a Khaler Fulcrum tremolo & the knobs are more like a “Gibson style Bell knob”.
Dimarzio Pickups
Back plate says “BC Rich LA, California”
Headstock says “BC Rich Made in USA”
1987 Warlock & Ironbird Bolt on model added to the catalog.
Knobs changed to the metal Knurled style.
Changed from Khaler’s to Floyd Rose (Khaler Tremolo’s were also still offered)
I believe these 1st Floyd models had an “Ibanez Edge” Floyd’s Rose.
Grover Tuners(BC Rich catalogues only specify “black hardware”, not by brand name).
1988 Gunslinger added to the catalog (strat style, 1 HB, angled heel, 1 knob, inverted headstock, Standard). (this could also be in late 87’) the Floyd Rose changed to a BC Rich logo Gotoh Floyd Rose with a brass block, whammy bar collar with Allen wrench to tighten.
Also at some point, and perhaps congruently, “Ping” brand(or Ping style) tuners were also used(this style is noticeable, due to no mounting screws on the back of the headstock).
1989 BC Rich Mockingbird & Bich Bolt on’s added.
Assassin Model added(Gunslinger with additional slanted neck single coil)
Tele, Dan Electro, 335, Dinky, Explorer, Les Paul Jr. Flying V, models added to catalog.
BC Rich switched from Dimarzio to their own branded pickups. (This was announced by Rico SR. In the “Winter 1989 BC Rich Tines”, so the beginning of 1989.)
The BC Rich logo Floyd Rose Tremolo also changed, no brass block, and a threaded screw in whammy bar. ( I believe this is when the “thru headstock locking nut” stopped being used).
These were still made in LA, California under Rico SR.
1990 gets a little hazy.
By 1991, USA production was moved to New Jersey.
The BC Rich logo on the headstock will have a “TM” added to it (the neck plate always had the “TM”), most I’ve seen are notated in the neck pocket with the “Year and NJ”.
Jealous. Been jonesin for a fluorescent green/yellow guitar lately. And I just learned how to spell "fluorescent", had to look it up, freak of a word it is.
i had a pink one last year till i sold it
at least he tried better than having the rich shaking loose
If THAT type of wrapping showed up at my doorstep, I'd be getting a refund and sending a "friendly" email to the original owner on how to properly take care of things.
Yes .. first!!
Price of these BC Rich’s just gone up now...
nice!
That switching is so stupid haha, charvel did that too. completely unuseable live
Many did, for for some the bridge was on-off-on to split the humbucker. Easier to flip a few switches than pull a pot IMO.
Sharpen that Axe
That is not a 1988 Before Christ guitar
“.... bridge, because that’s all that matters ...” Love it.
I got an Ibanez RG off reverb a few weeks ago, didnt realize til after I bought it seller had no feedback. So I watched the tracking and when it came the box was like a 4x3 box. I'm like theres no way. Figured he had to have taken it apart. But it was in there at an angle with a little brown paper and a Macys bag for packing. Somehow, not a single scratch on it.
I can't believe you got poisoned by that guitar.
Love the cc deville referance as he had a lot of bc rich's in his collection.
If it wasn't for CC, I wouldn't have wanted to play guitar.
"How to pack a guitar for shipping like a pro" video coming soon? 😁
StewMac also has a nice video. And I think Reverb has some nice tips on their site.z Just shipped my first guitar and those videos helped a lot. But I’m only doing local sales for now, that was way too much work for me haha.
i just love all those 80s era super strats. crazy colours, great sounds, good specs and just that vibe of the glam metal style.
Special Effects should have made it glow like in Pulp Fiction.
Lol
I totally approve of this purchase and color choice.
Phil .. I love everything you do! All the way down here in New Zealand !!
Thank you, very kind
Congrats! Looks and sounds great!
I heard it was all your fault you enabler, you!
I truly adore BC Rich Guitars & yellow is my favorite color !!! Great find & buy !! Love the video & extremely jealous !!! Congrats !!!
31 Days from Canada? Good to know the Canadian Pony Express is still going strong.
I had a Washburn parlor guitar sent to me not too long ago, and it had the bubble wrap around the neck in the case. The bubble wrap was so tight in the case, that the neck cracked at the headstock. It was a small crack, but I had to send it back. I wish someone would watch a video on how to properly pack a guitar for shipping. This experience I had was from a dealer on Reverb. They didn’t have another guitar to send me, so I had to wait until I got my refund, and the reordered the same guitar from another dealer. The thing that sucked was the other one cost almost $300 more...but I loved the guitar so much, it was worth it to me. I still got it at a steal for what it is, and I still have that guitar today! I did a video on it....my Washburn Limited Edition Timeless Series Parlor guitar. 🐰❤️🎸🎶🤝✌️
Phillip McKnight
Thank you for always making great videos and being a super humble person.
I hope to meet you one day, when the world goes somewhat back to normal.
Cheers from North Vancouver Canada
I had the neon green. Loved the unfinished neck. Mine had mini grovers when I got it. Miss that one. I remember I worked all summer to save up for it.
I would love to have one of these in neon green.
Ohh phil i love it when you talk dirty to me lol. Hopefully you'll understand.
That middle pickup chug makes my soul bounce
Talk Dirty to Me is probably the first song i woulda played too !! Haha! Great Axe!!
Congrats. I want the 2 BC Riches that was on Full House TV show. The custom Gun Slinger blue one and the rare NJ Semi hollow not made anymore. Look so cool when John played them and faked played them
Glad I saw this! I was just gonna comment on Full House!!
@@gtrman12887 John said on the Gibson party video this year that BC Rich was not a real guitar company. He was just sucking up to Gibson. He gets free Gibson's lol. He really played bad so he said? He said he sucked. He fake played and really played some of the time. He is one of the reasons I noticed BC Rich guitars and 1 of my influences besides other guitar players as well.
When I was a kid yeah a gunslinger was a dream. Never did get one.
I have one of the acoustics like he played on the show... I love it.
@@remley8877 valid point. I am old enough(44) to remember those days. Now people try sell even the old shitty(and there is tons,) of gear by all brands for some ridiculous prices. The used market is saturated with some seriously overpriced crap. Like people, just cuz it's old, does not mean it's vintage, or valuable. Junk is junk.
I bought one brand new when I was 17 years old. Gun metal grey with a reverse headstock. Sold it some years later for $200 in like new condition.
Poison riff=immediate thumbs up 👍🏼
I picked up a Aria Pro Knight Warrior recently for the same reason. Nothing like owning a guitar you dreamed about in the 80s!
I will tell you, Phil, all of that stuff newspaper and bubble wrap on the inside of the case is EXACTLY the way Reverb instructs people to pack a guitar. There's even a video on Reverb that goes through it step by step! That said, Reverb does suggest you put the case in a box with some packing!
I would suggest you use bubble wrap and foam padding and not paper in the case. Paper can scratch finishes, hold moisture and it breaks down fast.
@@PhillipMcKnight I agree with you, but I think you can do the used guitar world a service by telling Reverb that! ;-)
That is a guitar my son would love to own as he says the 80s produced so much great music. I have to agree as I had a real blast throughout that time, soundtracked by B.C. Rich guitars. I wish I could take my sone back to the 80s, to experience the fun times. music, concerts etc I had. P.S. What is the green sparkle Telecaster style guitar hanging up behind you?
The lime green one behind his head is a G&L custom shop I think.
@@cadem3936 thank you for the reply.
And baby---- talk dirty to me!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow!! you have such a kind heart, I am not a postal worker but just hearing you thank them, you have won my heart. And also I appreciate your honesty in all your reviews it make a difference. You have have earned my subscription.
Thanks for the poison!
Mine is in hot neon pink :) I also have a custom shop "black hole" ST3.. white guitar with big holes drilled all through the body and filled with black.. cool guitar
So happy to see that Phil enRICHed his arsenal.
Phil , if that is the worst you have ever seen a guitar packed you are a lucky man!! I recently bought an off brand super strat off of amazon that was shipped directly from the music store in texas.(G+L Music store)... The guitar was literally just wrapped in a sheet of cardboard.. Not a box, just a sheet of flat cardboard folded wrapped around the guitar with zero packing then taped closed.. when it arived the volume pot nut and washer had beed pushed right through the wood into the control cavity and half the strings were broken from the floyd being pressed against the body route .. I was charged $50 for that shipping job to ad insult to the situation..It could have been REAL bad.. I was actually amazed the neck didnt get toasted at the scarf joint and there wasnt more damage thn there was.. . Didnt pay too much for the guitar so I repaired it and kept it.. Left feedback for the store in line with the trainwreck I received only for them to dispute it and have amazon remove my feedback and pics.. Wish I could post pics of how it arrived here but alass YT sucks.. so remember , avoid G+L music on amazon .. HORRIBLE seller ..
Sorry for the slow Canadian shipping and thanks for the shout out to the postal workers! Apparently Canada Post is experiencing sustained Christmas like levels with HALF their employees and slowed down processing due to having to change procedures due to having to physically distance! I feel bad for them.
I have an old book about guitar set up and all that stuff. In the book it shows to send guitars the way you got your with newspaper stuffed in to keep from sliding in the case. " The Complete guide to GUITAR AND AMP Maintenance" Page 13. So I am guessing the guy has the same book.
Like myself, can't put off the 80's 'hair band' look anymore!
Those old Di Marzio super distortion pups are magic. I have one in my vintage parts caster ( just 1 vol control). Perfect for classic hard rock and Heavy Metal
Not worse packing then my Gibson Explorer from a large retailer in Sweden.
No padding at all and just the Gibson box with the hardcase inside, the guitar having no padding inside and just laid there free floating.
Top man Phil thanking the postal guys, one of the nicest guys doing guitar reviews on the tube, great review
So I found a Jackson Dinky Super Strat at a pawnshop and bought it I was wondering what year it’s from. It looks pretty old and it ha a fender type tremelo bridge not a Floyd rose. I tried looking it up but I can’t find any info about it wondering if it’s rare 🤔
