How would Larry Bird do in today's game he asks. Things are totally different. It is definitely far less physical. Easier for great scorers. I think Larry would score about 15+ points a game, about 5 rebounds, and probably 5 assists per game. You would certainly have to worry about injuries. Sure, the stats I listed don't seem like a lot, but you have to understand how limited his minutes would be at 66 years old.

    • @travishanks7295

He averaged 25 a game when they actually played defense in the 80s. But you think he'd average 15 in today's weak azz game. Bird would score 35 a game in today's panzy azz league

I grew up in LA during those days with Magic against Bird. There was no question in my mind at the time which was the best team and had the best player. I was in LA after all. Decades later, and the shades off.... watching Bird... his size, his height, his speed, his passing ability, shooting over, under, hook.. from distance. He is the GOAT.

Exactly, I love his passing even more than Magic's. He'd eat LeBron, the big crybaby's lunch. I am appalled that LeBron has the nerve to complain about the officiating against the Celtics on Saturday night. The dude spends half his career at the free throw line, probably 20% of which were off bogus calls, and he COMPLAINS?!?!? What a joke. Bird over Lebron any and every day of the week.

I am 55, I have never seen another player of any generation that I feared seeing them with the ball and my team up by 2 with 10 seconds or less on the clock. Today it's all about physical talent and individual accomplishments. Bird knew exactly what he would do, where he would do it and how he would do it. Then he would tell the opposing player the same thing................and then go out and do what he said he would do even if the other player knew it. Reggie Miller could easily play in today's game, no question.

I think that Bird and Miller would excel in today's NBA. Those two guys were so versatile that they could adapt to any opponent and do it quickly. To even think that the player of today could adapt to handle either Bird or Miller is just plain misguided. All you need to do is watch old videos of playoff games to see what happens when the game is on the line. Invariably, either of those guys could turn up the wick and essentially stifle their opponent. I was privileged to see Bird play live in Miami against the Heat. Even more fortunate was that I had seats behind the Celtics' bench.. It was no contest. Bird didn't even play the whole game yet the Celts handled the Heat with O'Neil in the middle. No contest. And Bird NEVER quit talking, even when he wasn't in the game.

The "superstars" of this era wouldn't get off the bench.
They wouldn't be able to get their own shot with the defense played back then, they wouldn't be able to play defense, and they'd be called for travelling at least 8x a game because in Bird's era, there was no Euro-step and a gathering step in addition to the 2 steps allowed to take once the ball is no longer being dribbled. It was more Iike:
      1. Pick up ball,
      2. Take one step with either foot, pivot on foot that didn't move
      3. Pass or shoot.

The cream always rises to the top no matter what generation, no matter what sport. Magic said he would train 5 to 6hrs a day because that’s what Bird would be doing. Bird said he stopped looking at the game stats once Magic became ill because there wasn’t any point looking any more but you can bet that the up and coming star players were looking at his stats if you want to be the best you must aspire to be better than the best

I used to watch a lot of NBA back in Bird's day, no question he'd dominate today's game. I pretty much only watch NCAA basketball now... a lot more team play, a lot less showboating. More than half of them will never play pro ball, and of those that do, most will end up in the G league or overseas, not the NBA... Meaning most of the kids playing in the college game are just playing because they love the game.

Todays game was MADE for both Larry Legend and Reggie.
Think about how they both could get open DESPITE tough defenses - then factor in today's rules that let them take more steps without dribbling. NO HAND CHECKS, and all of the other pro-Offensive Player rules (the zone defense would not be a factor, both EASILY have the range to shoot outside of it).

Larry went to the orthopedic doctor after experiencing pain in his knee, the doctor immediately recommended knee replacement and cled his assistant to bring in the saw and hammer. But doctor said Larry how will I control the movement of my knee, given all the tendons ligaments etc. The replied, stop wasting my time, I've performed thousands of these knee replacements and no one has ever complained. Yea said Larry they couldn't make it back to your office. Just then at that very moment, Larry heard the pull of an electric saw and the sound of someone screaming. The doctor immediately said that is the patient. So Larry said hurry up and let's get this done.

Id say Bird would be a LETHAL 3 Point Shooter, if in todays game you really cant put hands on the player he would eat, and also be a menace with the assists maybe not so much on Defence but a SOLID player with a 24 point average and 6 Assists per game with at least 5 rebounds a game imo

Larry would totally rule the game, he’d do whatever he wanted offensively as NBA lacks in talent defensivelyand teams aren’t defenseively minded( so can you imagine how he would rule -points, rebounds,assists-You name it! Reggie was never as skilled as Bird but he too would be a top 5-8 player, if not higher!

Let’s think about it. How would Bird do in todays game. Larry lead the league in 3pt conversions I believe for 3 years. Todays game is all about the ability to make the three point shot. Bird would dominate. Larry would be the first person down the court to make the dunk, to pull up and take his killer Step Back shot right in the face of a defender. Many players today can do the same thing to great success. Larry would still be able to do it today without issue. Larry lead the league twice in defensive stats. I believe he still could do it today. There were very few people who could plat in the paint like larry. He would hustle, he would rebound and he stole the ball all the while shoulder to shoulder with the greatest players of the 80 and come out on top. He will still do that today. Hid passing skills were second to none. That translates into todays game perfectly. And lastly this was done in a league where Handchecking was legal and encouraged. When boxing out players was encouraged and taught. And when players were literally hanging off another players back, and he still lead the league in points, D stats and steals. Today you can’t even breath on an opponent without having a penalty called. So would larry do well in todays league? Hell no, he would OWN todays league.
