    Rod's liner notes back in the day were always a little flippant and facetious, which is generally ok, but I think he did the man, and the fans, a grave disservice with the nonchalant "his name slips my mind" crack. I can understand paying scale if that's the going rate but, jeez, at least give the dude the dignity of his name. He may not have technically written the song, but his solo absolutely MADE it (well, that and the bass line.)

    As a songwriter, I consider this to be a really interesting and unusual case. Ray Jackson's contribution to the song Maggie May was HUGE! Without the mandolin part, the song has no hook and hardly any melody. Jackson didn't contribute a mere improvised solo for Maggie May; he supplied the only melodic motif the song has! I really wish he had pursued his rights further, because he absolutely deserved writing credit and a share of the song's profits. I'd go so far as to say that Ray Jackson's contribution to Maggie May was nothing less than the most iconic and recognizable mandolin melody in Rock music. For what he was paid, he might as well have done nothing in that studio session but strum mindlessly in the background. Rod Stewart behaved like a dishonorable douchebag.

    To be fair to Rod, it was printed on the sleeve that the Mandolin was played by the Mandlin player from Lindisfarne, but he should've mentioned Ray by name. Jacka also played Mandolin on Mandlin Wind from the same album.

    • @lyndamcardle4123
      @lyndamcardle4123 6 років тому +2

      Jacka was primarily engaged on the EPTAS sessions to play a solo on "Mandolin Wind" which was itself a great solo.... it was only due to the sparse instrumental backing on "Maggie May" that he was asked further if he could enhance the backing track. To be honest, Jacka follows the bass line and classical guitar chord structure of the late Martin Quittenton (who never ever gets the co-writing credit he deserved for this track) and added his iconic strummed mandolin riff. Wonderful. If I was Stewart and with the success of both single and album, I'd have given Jacka an "ex-gratia" payment in lieu of his performance.... he deserved it....

However , I don't recall anyone with half a brain believing for one minute that John Peel played mandolin on Maggie . The Faces asked him to mime because Peel was a huge fan ( his favourite band for years before he went all hip and dumped them for The Fall ) and championed them more than any band , at that time , on his radio programme . The Faces returned the favour here .

    It does sound like Rod Stewart acted like a bit of a shit. But to be fair, the musician's union rates were pretty good for the time and they was designed to compensate session players in full for their contributions.
    If Stewart would have been told at the time that he'd have to give a percentage or cut of any profits the record might make to the mandolin player he might have opted to do a guitar solo instead.
    If session musicians like Carol Kaye and Hal Blaine got a cut of the profits from records they played on they'd be multi-millionaires by now - as would session singers like Tessa Niles.

    • @LynseyFenton
      @LynseyFenton Рік тому +1

      But if he had made that decision to cut the mandolin the record probably wouldn't have been the monster that it became. Greed is not a good thing and Ray deserves his 50 percent cut of this record. It's made millions.

    • @martyk656
      @martyk656 Рік тому +1

      @TheSmithDorian Finally, a sensible comment. It's the deal that was made. Without the songwriter, there is no song to play the solo over. Anyone that thinks a memorable solo = 50% of a song has no understanding of songwriting or the music business. Steve Lukather should get 50% of Beat It for the memorable riff & Eddie Van Halen should get 50% for the solo. The leaves nothing for MJ. Many artists played on each other's records for little or no financial compensation. Often it was uncredited because they didn't get explicit permission from their record company. The tongue in cheek comment about forgetting his name makes me think that might be the real reason. Ray Jackson didn't get permission to play on a different record label.
      In this case, Ray Jackson got paid union scale. If the record had completely flopped, he'd have still had his 15 quid.

    I will probably always love Rod's voice and singing (phrasing) and many of the songs he wrote but account after account shows him a selfish person who wouldnt carry equipment in the early days when all were equal in a band, and being notorious for avoiding paying for drinks. I've never been surprised that he avoided giving credit for or paying extra for this iconic mandolin piece. Led Zep were similar in not crediting that the lead-in for Black mountainside came from Bert Jansch's version of Blackwaterside.

    Really surprised that John Peel took part in such a shitty charade. Not at all surprised about Stewart, so far up himself anyway. Never mind Ray we know the truth.

    its shitty that this geeza didnt get a fair slice of pie but this little riff is just that. anyone who plays mandolin can play it and it will have been played before. think of all the folk standards that where written by Anon; the songs remain yet nobody knows who originally penned them. there are just12 notes in western music and you can bet that all the notes, riffs, melodies and harmonies have been used, modified, forgotten and resurrected a million times before the advent of pop culture.

      This ''little riff'' is what made the song a hit. EVERYONE I speak to, remembers that part before anything else. And with regards to the ''anyone can play it'' theory: yes but very few can write the songs as easily as they can play them. The song alone is average.

    Ray should sue for 50%. He would probably win. There's no way in hell this isn't a co-write. Rod Stewart is a selfish old ass. Not even crediting him for his performance is the lowest of the low.

    Whilst not wishing to downplay Jackson's contribution to the song he has twice taken his case to court and twice been rebuffed. Sad as it is he was paid the rate of a session musician for his part in the song. He perhaps ought to have been acknowledged for his work but wasn't. I note this clip is dated 2011 and it is now time everyone involved moved on. Digging up controversy over a song released in 1971 serves no purpose other than acting a bit like click bait for videos.

      That's the problem with signing a ''work for hire'' agreement. The fact that he tried to discredit him still stinks though and he could pay him a six figure peace offering cheque. He wouldn't miss the money and it made the record what it is.

    Rod was always known as tight -fisted, by those who knew him , as I did, but this story drags that into mean-minded , too, plius a few more adjectives as per expletives deleted...what goes around comes around, don't it??!! Someone -Her Majesty - please give Ray a knighthood!!
