Tricky thing, culturally, to pull off. Muskegon, MI has been doing the balancing act for decades. Bettye LaVette is from our town. Our vibrant jazz scene in the 80's came from our mostly black Muskegon Heights school system music dept. You need funding from the elite white "arts community" but you can't price out the tickets to exclude the roots of where the music comes from. Music is the best driver of local pride and a vehicle for community bonding and healing. Good luck. It ain't easy !
So sad that the music scene that used to be here has been shuttered. My son is a musician and longs for the days when music is a big part of St. Louis culture again.
Do you have a facebook page or a public email address? As a young adult I mowed grass for a couple that from what I was told about them might fit into the Lemp story. It may all be stories but I would truly like to know.
