- I'm here at the Battery the Maisy, a German fortification that was forgotten and the exact location had been lost from records for over 60 years.
A battery that was ignored by the allies and let Omaha beach be shelled for over several days without them knowing where the shelling came from.

I was there back in 2019 and was as shocked as you were of the lack of concern and care for a place of great history. Now watching this video makes remember the sadness I had when I was there.
It's really depressing to see and I can understand why people say it's a lazy money grab and why further development is halted by the local government, not only because of the controversial history but also because of the state of the place.
@@PanzerPicture Its history and even though controversial its still history look at Pointe du Hoc a lot happened there and yet its taken care of, just up setting. Best from California
Damn good job, visiting Maisy battery's really is a experience. I met Gary's son law and daughter there who were very helpful talking about the battery. Those Ranger's did what they were trained to do clearing out that battery. Reading about how someone found a ranger jacket in a barn near there was also a incredible find aswell.
We visited de Battery of Macy last week. I can say it was not like you see in this video. It was cleaned up and the overgrowth and fallen trees were removed. I found it interesting and worth the visit.
I went with 3 others this week. A "museum" that has so much potential and "feel" we all really enjoyed the visit and I would agree with the comments about maintenance of the site, but I do think that it's difficult if there has been a lot of rain. The signage and information signs (on site) could be so much better and I wish it was. I would recommend a visit (bring good outdoor "dirty weather" shoes / boots. I think it was more than 7 euro.... more like 9 now .... I didn't pay as it wasn't my turn in our group !!
It's a shame that they left the materials just rot history it's rotting away you know how many Museums would love to have that material or collectors we're collectors and not let it rot Thanks for the work you do

Been there round 2012, I was impressed by the way the site blended in the countrysite. It felt more like a real battlefield than a museum. Almost as it was abandoned a few months ago. And we encountered no shit. 😅

Thank you for this visit and for exploring the battery. I’ve read Gary Stern’s books on the US Ranger training in SW England, where I live, and the description of events from 6-9 June. If something goes wrong in warfare, the victors usually cover it up. The shelling of Omaha with large calibre weapons only stopped after Maisy was destroyed. Col Rudder failed in his duty and disobeyed his orders. I guess that may have led to Maisy’s interment for so many decades. Shame about its present day condition 💩😳
I own that book and have a friend in Saskatoon who has visited Mr Stearne.
The attack on The Hoc was unnecessary. The disobedience of the commander should have ended his career. But he is celebrated. Just to cover the lies.
An absolute disgrace to the memories of the Rangers killed that day.
Do you realize that the uncovering of this site has not been government funded but has been done largely by human hands and shovels? The owner said one time that we were welcome to come dig during the summer. They were always looking for volunteers. This has been a tremendous project taken on by very few people. I think what they have accomplished is amazing. Don’t be too quick to criticize the rustic trenches and paths. It’s probably closer to the original than some of the other bunkers. When we have brought groups to Normandy this site is always one we visit because of its history. So it can be a little muddy….. I greatly admire what Gary Stern and his son Dan have done with bringing Maisy back for us to see.
Nonsense! It takes a minute to clean up garbage and human feces. When I was at this site it was a muddy dirty mess and it would only take a weekend to clean that up.

It was almost a real chaos during the landing at Omaha beach so shouldn't be a surprise that bombed like crazy all around except Maisey, only to forget the location after the passage of thebattle! Really interesting video and good job as always 👍👍!

I really enjoyed this video about battery Maisey and especially the drone footage gives a much better perspective than just looking at map illustrations. It's a shame that the French government or the local town council doesn't do something to preserve this historic battlefield. It may seem insignificant to some because of the other sites like the beaches, Pointe Du Hoc, and the other towns and villages that airborne troops fought in, but this is still a piece of history and it needs to be preserved. Until I saw this video I had no idea or knowledge of this battery or that it was ordered to be covered up. Just goes to show that there is still a lot more to be learned about the DDay landings and the battles that took place. Can't wait for the next video.

Those German guns on the Maisy would look nice once restored a shame to have history go to waste! Museums and Restorers listen up. Should be kept clean and fenced off areas so visitors can enjoy it. thanks for the video
We stayed in Maisy 20 years ago, in a house between the church and the main road. In the garden of the large house there were some gun emplacements, as I remember? We didn't know of this museum, would have visited. Interesting video, thank you.

Interesting video on the Maisy Battery. Disheartening to see/ hear of its present condition. Steps definitely should be taken to preserve the history of the site.

Strange that it has fallen into such a state. I was there in 2009 and it was pretty tidy - It has gone the opposite way to most of the others like Azeville & Crisbecq - which I first found in 1988 when they were completely overgrown
I found Azeville a specially nice and changed a lot over the years.

An excellent & very enlightening video, thanks. I understood Gary Stern bought this land to excavate it so I assume also he/his family are the owners ? If so, I suspect they have limited funds which may account for its rustic state. American government & benefactors financially support many WW2 sites/museums & it's shame this site can't receive similar financial charity. A key factor may be, as you have made clear, the failure to attack & capture this important defensive facility undoubtedly resulted in many more lives lost on the Omaha assault and it was a major failing at operational & command level. So much so, as you've also stated, that the US government had it literally buried from sight & history. That in itself may be the reason why this place doesn't receive the financial support & recognition it would otherwise deserve.
I am currently at this Maisy Battery, and although I respect and agree with some of the comments, feel they are a bit unfair. Some points need making to put the points of view into perspective.
The battery is a small family affair and as such there are limits to what can be achieved. Politics also add a complexity to ongoing development. Further bunkers are currently being unearthed and there is a limit to how much can be carried out with time available and weather, not to mention financial constraints.
The expression ‘money grab’ I also think is unfair. Not only has the Covid situation held back development and income (don’t forget, this has been a 2-3 year and is still an ongoing issue) but this place can only operate seasonally, staff have to be paid and the turnover in respect of entrance fee is hardly a gold mine!
If you have read Gary Sternes’ books, all three of them, you must also realise that this has taken priority to a certain degree and has been a massive and time consuming commitment.
The foliage is something that cannot be helped, this is a protected nature reserve and the home to bats, foxes, and badgers. This limits development for the time being at least. Many of the other sites in the area have massive financial backing as they are often funded by the Americans in supporting the heroic myth/story line. As you have pointed out, this site contradicts and goes against the historic doctrine that has been continually repeated since the end of the war. Therefor it has been a swim against the tide initially in getting support and acceptance to a degree.
I agree that one of the bunkers does smell like a latrine, but the only shit I noticed was from badgers and the occasional dogs. These are dealt with periodically but as I said. There is only so much can be achieved with such a large operation, available funding, and family commitments. I feel personally that great respect and admiration should be given to Gary Sterne for his commitment and uncovering of this battery, and the TRUE story behind its involvement on D Day. Something that hitherto was unknown.
To sum up, do not let the negative comments put off you visiting this site. Rather, except it for its uniqueness, it’s basic and historic appeal and realise the real limitations of such a huge undertaking, by such a small team of people with a limit of time available.
The Grand Bunker, Merville Battery and so many others are privately owned and they aren't as dirty as this one, so you really are reaching for an excuse for this place.
Yeah it's rustic and overgrown but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of it. The fact it has been uncovered to this degree deserves thanks, after all, nobody else had the naus and drive to do it.

just got back, really enjoyed this, but it does seem quite `heath robinson` approach, perhaps when more funds allow? who knows, would be nice to to see alot of the overgrown foliage cut back, and that tree is still there! not the original guns either? but alot of potential if handled right?

All the ww2 sites are respected sacred grounds reflecting all souls from both sides that were lost , So let’s keep these sites as natural in keeping with nature as possible there are paths to walk among them so they don’t need anything else especially twee effi trinket landscaping , there’s enough flags around to almost ‘ Hollywood everything’ so the last thing that’s wanted are hotdog stands/ fairground rides & flashing neons .
