That's a great tip. Fortunately. I haven't had to patch one...yet! But now I'll know how when I do. I mostly use canvas boards instead. Thanks! See ya in the morning on Sat Chat!!😄
Excellent video and superior instruction for all of your viewers! I have been amazed at how low prices are for stretched canvases! I used to do all my own, I made larger or differently shaped canvases like triangles or hexagonal shapes. I have retreated to basic rectangular shapes these days and the occasional square. Thank you for sharing all of your ideas and techniques with us. You young lady are a true gem! Please take care and have a lovely day!
I tried something similar, because I didn’t have raw canvas I used a canvas ‘paper’ pad, which has removable sheets of canvas you can paint on, glued together in a flip book form. Works great !
That’s the plan! Ive picked up some great discount canvases with holes or dents… I’m not fancy, I’ll patch and used it anyways! Thanks for the water on back trick!
I do not usually paint on canvas, but I do have a couple of them here that I have gathered over the years, mostly because they were super cheap or free. One of them came from my neigbour, I don't even know who exactly, lol. The canvas was just sitting out in the hall and had a little hole in it, so I put a note on it asking whether I could have it. The next day I found it in front of my door. - Friendly unknown neighbour. Ever sind I have been wondering how to fix that thing. Thanks for letting me know. Now hopefully I will get aorund to actually doing some painting on canvas one of these days - I bought a set of acrylics, brushes, gesso, palette knifes, all with good intentions. But so far I have not touched any of this stuff, except for the gesso, which I aleady had to replace because I keep using it for pastels and color pencils. 😅
Fantastic tip, I have two small ones that I was going to get rid of, but oh no not after seeing this!! I also did not know about the water on it if it is dented. Great video💕💕
Good to know how to do this! Can't see where the repair was made at all! I need to repair a work my mom painted. It got a puncture when I went to frame it 😭.
Great tip! I don't do that kind of painting (on canvas; just watercolor on sc paper), but still useful info to know, especially if needed to repair a painting. Thanks!
Fantastic, thanks so much Lindsay! 🏆I was looking forward to you demonstrating this as my favorite picture canvas got damaged recently, similar sized hole but thankfully in a busy part of the painting which won't go unnoticed if my painting skills are lacking (intend on doing a tester before attempting on the original). It's only a generic printed picture but it takes everyone's breath away! 💝☕🍰💐
If your picture is a printed on canvas and you can not get the surface even or if you can still see the repair, it might need a new topcoat. You can use a spray varnish or a brush on application to level out the surface, rather like Lindsay did with the gesso. Good luck!
Thanks very much, I have a canvas with a small hole in it and will try this out. It would be great if you can do a stretching your own canvas video - in particular, I have 2 paintings on canvas that I bought from abroad and they need to be stretched onto stretcher bars - I don't want to get it wrong because I'll ruin the paintings. Are there special concerns when stretching a painted canvas compared to stretching a blank canvas? Cracking etc? Thanks very much again. :)
If I am stretching new canvas I wet it and stretch and staple it down and then gesso it for a drum tight effect. If it is already painted you just need to venter it and staple
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks very much Lindsay. I didn't receive notice that you'd replied to this - I just happened back here because someone liked my comment and I came back to check it out! So sorry I'm acknowledging your reply so late in the day, and thanks! :)
You're a life saver! Could I use modeling paste instead of gesso on the front and could I use heavy duckcloth or the patches used for torn knees in jeans for the patch?
I'm definitely going to try spraying water on the back of a canvas I have that has an odd stretch in it!! In a slightly similar vein, I saw that you had commented on another UA-camr's video about resizing watercolor paper using gelatin (maybe it was Ian Jackson's??). Just wondering if you've tried it, as I'll be trying it soon!! 😊 Thank you!!
I have a funny story to tell you about stretching a canvas. I wasn’t stretching it somebody else was. I was in college of time living in a dorm it was about three in the morning and someone decided to stretch a canvas in the stairwell. My dorm room was an end unit next to the stairwell. All I could hear was the resounding boom from her hammering frame. I finally got up went to the stairwell and asked if she was out of her mind to do that in the stairwell that time of night and thanked her for waking me up.
Okaaaay! So the first words out of your mouth answered a question I have been wondering about for ages! What is PVA glue? I always thought it was a European product. Good to know that it’s aka Mod Podge. The tip about removing dents from a canvas was another one I’ll file away for the future! Thanks for the info laden video!
I would love to see a video on how to stretch your own canvases. Also if you could touch on how to mount a the fredrix canvas sheet pad that is pre painted on stretch bars and on board would be awesome since I do have the canvas sheets but havent used them yet because if a painting turns out I'm not sure how I would be able to display it. Also would really love to see how to correctly frame watercolor paintings for beginners. I have a few paintings I have stuck in a portfolio because I'm not sure exactly to go about correctly framing them. Also, is it possible to frame canvas sheets that have been painted with acrylic in a frame like you would a watercolor (of course I'm assuming it would have to be a reasonable size to work.) Thanks Lindsay. I really love these type of videos I have learned so much from your videos.❤
With the canvas sheets I'd mountb them to an archival board with mat medium. They will be easier and cheaper to frame too and you won't loose inches along the edges like you would if you stretched it on bars.
@@thefrugalcrafter I bought canvas sheets that are larger than Intend to paint (i usually paint only up to 9x12 right now) with enough space to account for wrapping around stretcher bars.....I always kind of assumed framing would be more expensive than stretching plus I kinda like the look of a stretched canvas more than having it framed.
Hi Lindsay, your comment about canvases being cheaper in recent years brought to mind the inexpensive craft store bundle packs or dollar tree canvases. Would coating them with good gesso make much of a difference? I use white and clear gesso in my mixed media art journal, learn new things journal, and when I want a toothier surface on various things. I have a "I wonder how this will turn out?" mindset when playing with my art supplies. Overall, it's about learning and trying things for joy and fun for me rather than making a masterpiece, but I was just wondering again. :)

omg so much better than the duct tape I tried! lol
That is amazing, Lindsay! WOW! I would've thrown it away. You saved the day! I would love to see you stretch canvas. Very interesting. Tfs.

Great job! I can't even tell where the canvas had the hole. Thanks!

Good advice, thanks Lindsay.
It came out much nicer than I would have thought. Great tip, Lindsay. :) Have an awesome weekend. :)

Work from the center of each edge to keep it evenly taut.

Always interested in how to stretch canvases. The glass thing might be a pickle weight?
Love this!

It totally would! The budget canvas has fewer coats of primer.
Awesome!!
Great Info! Thank you so much. xo
put canvas paper on back and glue it on the back! that easy!
How’d you know I need this!
Glad it's useful!
And if you’ve already done a painting, do you follow the same process?
Mostly, just use a clear glue and not gesso and then touch up the paint on the front when dry.
Thanks Lindsay. Great tip.
