Great review of a fantastic book. I bought it last year after seeing a review of it on another channel and I was not disappointed. As you say, the photos are unbelievably clear, and so many rarely seen before. When I got my copy, I sat down and read it from cover to cover, not getting to bed that night until nearly dawn. Could not put it down.
Thanks for paging through this great book!... it's so cool to see large photo versions of two of Elvis best e.p. covers,"The Real Elvis" and "Shake Rattle and Roll",I gotta get a copy sometime!!!
What a fantastic book, I just bought the new MRS cd release of this, plus the 56 live performance cd? You mentioned taking a pic of the TVs to get a colour reference? But weren't all TVs still B&W? Is this an old post as you're still on the chairs? Cheers JnJ. ❤❤
Hi, Denny! These are from what we filmed in May of 2023, we're still using these before going fully with the couch when season 3 starts in July. :) But originally, the Milton Berle show was in color, just the kinescopes were black and white - so some people got to see these shows in color! But most people still had black & white TVs, so only a small portion of the audience would have seen it that way, sadly.
I’ve just found a copy online for a reasonable price as some sellers on eBay are asking silly money for used copies .. should have it before the wknd 👌 Cheers again guys great review 👍🏻 Paul (London/ uk)
This is quite a beautiful book....it reminds me to ask this question - what is the best DVD/ blu ray version of the Ed Sullivan shows? I've seen quite a few.
Hello! Sorry I'm just now getting to these, finally feeling better... imo, the best quality is this release www.amazon.com/Elvis-Presley-Ed-Sullivan-Shows/dp/B000I2J7FO
I’m confused…did I hear you say the early tv shows were seen in color back in the day when audience saw them LIVE? since every clip that seems to be out there is black &white…I presumed that’s the way audience saw them
Based on what Jamie and John said and what I know about TV history--some of the shows were originally broadcast in color (I think the Milton Berle and the Sinatra show), but the original color tapes were lost or taped over, so we only have B&W copies. Plus, most people in the 1950s and early 60s had only B&W TV sets--color TV sets were very expensive, so only relatively few people would have seen the original color shows. Great episode, thanks!
Hey! Yes that’s right! In the early days of Broadcast Television, NBC and ABC were among the first stations broadcasting in Color. So, if you had a color television from 1956-60, Elvis’s appearances of Milton Berle, Steve Allen and The Frank Sinatra Special would have been broadcast in full color. The Ed Sullivan appearances on CBS would have been black and white. The reason we only have black and white copies today is that TV shows were preserved by making “kinescopes”, which was a process that was created by pointing a film camera at a TV during a broadcast and filming the screen - and because Color 16mm film was far more expensive than B&W film, the vast majority of kinescopes are only black and white.
Wow guys, what a fantastic book!! 😮 Absolutely sensational! 🤩👌👍💯
Thank you, Graeme! Yeah, we really enjoy this one!

Yeah, that's why it's hard to collect sometimes in the Elvis world - if you don't see it, it's not easy to know if it's something you need!
@@SharingElvis1935 Fantastic, Paul! So happy you got a copy!!
Beautiful book. Thank you guys. Now I must find it and buy it, lol.
You're very welcome - happy to help!

We did, indeed! And yep - thanks @johnheath1868 for the detailed reply!
Of course, Western Union ⚡️⚡️
Nicely done!
It's a shame that the photos are all coloured in the wrong colours
On the cover? Yeah, that was definitely an "artistic license thing" - I'm ok with it, but totally understand how it can be grating to others. :)
Western Union…Clickity Clack 😂
