I would have loved to have had Mr. Craig teach me how to serve in tennis. I learned in 5 minutes on a wall before tryouts for my high school tennis team. Never quite got the serve right. He seems so patient. But then again, that's the mark of a good teacher.
John I really liked 3 things you mentioned that I haven’t thought a lot about... 1. Back heel up when bouncing 2. Let a majority of the racquets weight rest in tossing hand when in the ready position 3. Avoid catching poor tosses
Smart start with footwork movement. Add the ready state position of the hands, with emphasis on the unit turn, deceleration, then acceleration. I like your loosening of the arm, relaxed wrist. Most of all, your encouraging, non judgmental, not overwhelming, looks easy coaching. Keep it up.
Best of luck on your tennis progress Adriana! 👍👍👏👏🎾🎾🎾 I'm sure with John's excellent instruction, you will develop into a very good player, as you seem to have very good athletic skills and a fast learner! 🎾🎾🎾
This video and the previous video explain to me the problems that I have been having with my serve, overall I am a 3.0 but my service pretty darn terrible and the reason is that I have been serving with the forehand grip for over a year now, I play consistently at least two to three times a week (for most weeks) And while it has helped me become a 3.0 from almost a novice, But at the same time it has really harm the progression of my serve because I have been serving with forehand grip just to get the ball into play And I have been consistent with that, But the price is that my bad habit has gotten so solid that it's difficult to change it now. But this video and has another video on the serve grip did a wonderful job of helping me understand where I'm going wrong.
Hi, I keep my body still during the stage where my tossing arm is rising to the point of release. Once the ball is released, my tossing arm continues to rise and my body then moves with the arm into the trophy position. I will produce a video on this in the near future. Best, John
John, my 9 year old granddaughter is working on her serve. She can toss the ball correctly most of the time but she hits the ball high and long (sort of a lob). Is she not bringing the racket around quickly enough?
Hi Jim, Without seeing your daughter's serve, I could not make an accurate assessment. I am happy to take a look and provide a complete review and recommendations. Here is a link to my "Seeve Video Analysis" service: performanceplustennis.com/serve-video-analysis-description/ Kindly, John
As far as the continental grip is concerned, I beg to differ. I used to hit serves with the continental grip for years, but not anymore. Believe it or not, I use the semi-western grip when serving. The grip doesn't really affect my ability to serve faster than others. As for me, the continental grip is a myth. As a righty I've started practicing lefty serve with the FH grip as well. Had I sticked to the continental grip rule, I could've lost interest in lefty serve much earlier. As for me, the continental is kinda anti-nature, whilst the semi-western is nature friendly.
Thanks for sharing your experience on the grip and serve. I would love to see a video of you playing both the slice and topspin serve with your semi-western grip. Honestly, the biggest problem is coaches advocate the continental grip, but very few understand how the grip, in conjunction with the correct motion, produce the greatest combination of power, spin and control. Why do all high performance players use a continental grip? I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks, John
My ball toss is horrible. I'm so used to just tossing the ball right in front of me and now that I'm trying to serve correctly- it is slowing my progress down significantly.
Hi, Thanks for sharing your issues with your toss. Head over to my Serve playlist and review the lessons I present on the ball toss. These will really help you! Let me know how you are progressing. Best, John
I wish I could afford to hire John as my coach for a month! I would be hell of a lot better player.😀 How much would that cost me John ? Maybe I can start saving up.

Yes, and that is something that I often fix! Best to keep the palm down and the forearm steady...after all, that is what happens when tossing. Thanks, John

@ 3:11 she grabs the racquet with the right grip instinctively! Relaxed, open hand, near Continental.
Very nice
What is your body doing exactly As you toss? Is it still rocking backward? Are your knees bending down whilr you are tossing ?

Thank you... although, I'm not so sure that was her normal serve at the beginning 😅 the ball bounce was too fluid

Anyone else bothered by the way she catches and bounces the ball?

Junk!
Wow Jeff...what do you have in mind? Do you have a better process? If so, I'd love to see it/ hear about it.
