    I remember when I first heared of unrealistic body standards. The point was made that it really hurts women, and when it was pointed out that male characters are unrealistic as well, the response was always "the women are made sexy to appeal to men, and men are made as a power fantasy for men". It was such a bogus argument and time has proven how stupid it was.

    • @itzi7868
      @itzi7868 8 місяців тому +8

      no, that statement is 100% true and 2 things can be true at the same time, men were made as a power fantasy for men And also to be attractive too, but women were almost always relegated towards being just sexy and being strong, but only some of the times.
      If we're really being honest here, you know well that male characters almost always take on the true power fantasy to its end, I have yet to see a show where a strong sexy woman is the one to beat say Darkseid if we're talking JL, or Apocalypse if we're talking X-Men, because any concession like this made always falls short.
      Think about it if it was done oppositely, if you had guys being slowly shoved to the wayside so women can hog up almost all of the spotlights, people would cry foul on that, right? because female characters don't generally get to have a true power fantasy like that, anytime that they do is extremely rare and I know this too well, because I've grown up with these shows people obsess over now from the 80s, 90s and 2000s.

    • @simongotborg3866
      @simongotborg3866 8 місяців тому +38

      @68 I won't deny that male and female characters are treated differently and this was certainly more true in the past. I appriciate the effort in your response but I don't think you're seeing the point I'm making here.
      If media shapes our expectations, and unrealistic expectations hurt the associated demographic, then why wouldn't unrealisitc power fantasies hurt men? Most guys aren't going to able to beat up Darkseid (or the real world equivalent). How is that not an unrealisitc standard?
      You can't say "it's made by men for men so it's fine" because the adults making DC movies aren't the same teenage boys hurt by unrealistic standards. And even if they were, we should still care for people with self-inflicted wounds. If someone is engaging in self harming behaviour we don't blame them for it.
      Beyond that, the framing omits key details for the sake of the narrative:
      1. Being attractive gives you status. Status gives you influence. Influence is power. "Being attractive" is a power fantasy. Being "the person worth rescuing" is a position of power.
      2. If you check out media created and disproportionatly consumed by women you'll see the same trends: Competent men and attractive women. The truth is that many women like this as well.
      It's a bogus argument because it's based on a biased framing and completely irrelevant to the issue that was raised.

    • @itzi7868
      @itzi7868 7 місяців тому +2

      @@simongotborg3866 a bit late on this. what I mean by shaping our expectations isn't necessarily about what to expect in real life, it's about the expectations we have in the media we go to watch.
      The thing is, I get what you're saying and I'm not disagreeing with anything you said, the way that I see it though is that male characters need a lot more variety and to rely less on the same covered characteristics many times over.
      On the points you mentioned, the thing about power that you said there, it's true to an extent, as I explained this before that power fantasy you're describing is inherently limited, or, it's just purely a sexual fantasy.. No judgment there, male superheroes get that too, being attractive is being attractive after all and they can certainly be pined for, but at that point it feels kinda small in the grand scheme of things since you know, you can make the comparison of the "I Can do Anything you Can do Better!" musical number, except in this case, it's honestly kinda true.. ^^
      I mean you could say that women have more advantage there as being more emotionally mature usually and I can give you that point, but I feel like we're settling for a sorta small consolation prize with this, right? because the power fantasy in this only goes so far, when compared to the power fantasy of taking down the big bad which goes all of the way.
      Lastly, I think that sounds a lot like rationalization. For example, if we lived in the times where only the Emperor of Rome and his trustees could be portrayed in media and that media was still great, would you make the same argument that commoners don't want to see themselves, because they like seeing the Emperor and his peers on screen? the point there being that, if no other meaningful choice exists to counter the predominant one, there's not much of a comparison there.
      That's kinda the point I'm getting at here, there's blindspots that I'm seeing many people avoiding in this broader discussion and this blindspots hurt creativity in a different way, by having it become oversaturated with the predominant things, something that saps away at people's excitement. Again, if we only had the Emperor and his posse being the predominant ones portrayed, that would get oversaturated quick, this problem is the same as that but on a bigger scale, where one sex feels overrepresented.
      What I'm saying? We need more interesting, and don't get me wrong, all I said before I didn't say because I want sexy ladies that make me go Awooga to go away, I want those sexy ladies, as well as more interesting things and in this discussion, I don't think it's a case of needing to choose between only one or the other, I think we can have both. Often it's the first taste tells you that something is great and you need more of that and for me, some of those that I can recall right now were Megamind and Into the Spider Verse.

    What makes men feel bad is being rejected by women for not looking like Efron with 0% body fat.
    We don't care what any media is portraying. We don't feel inadequate because Thor's physique is being flaunted. We feel inadequate because Thor is what every woman wants, and anything else is "settling," which, even if we don't get rejected, we end up feeling temporary, and we believe that we will be discarded once Thor does show up.

      I lost 40 pounds in less than a year by moving my breakfast calories to the afternoon and early evening. I eat at 1 PM and stop eating anything by 8 or 9 PM depending on how I'm feeling that day, some days I extend my fast to 2 PM and on days where I had very bad sleep I eat at half past 12 PM or so instead. I didn't stop eating healthy meals, nor did I cut out my chips, potato sticks, ice cream and chocolates. Breakfast is one of the worst things you can do to your body, since without the extended fasting period in the morning, you load down your body that early with digesting more stuff and your liver doesn't have enough time to clear out its fatty acids and whatnot, so move breakfast to the afternoon, or merge it with lunch, and you should see a lot of returns. You'll notice at first that you feel a bit more tired in the mornings since your body is still expecting and preparing for food, getting things ready to eat without stopping the fast yet, but as the first few days pass your body basically sighs in relief and starts focusing your energy towards your liver, brain and muscles instead of your stomach and intestines, making you more energetic in the mornings and allowing your body to do extended maintenance on itself even after waking up from sleep. If you notice some aches in your sternum, you should probably first have at least a semblance of a breakfast, but keep gradually and gently pushing it back until you find yourself no longer eating before lunch at all and finding that your body is no longer aching for food, as its gotten used to a healthier intake pattern. Our ancestors would wake up at 5 AM and work until like 1 or 2 PM, have a big lunch and then do lower-intensity tasks in the afternoon, then have a big hearty dinner with lots of protein from beans and meat and anything else, then socialize with family and community as they digest it all and relax and have fun, tell stories to the kids and whatnot, then turn in for the night at like 9 PM, get 8 hours of sleep and wake with the rooster's call. Those folks, despite losing perhaps half of their children at birth due to poor healthcare, lived into the late 80s and early 90s without much issue, now we can only manage our early 80s at best for women and mid-70s for men. Breakfast is one among several likely causes.

      Sadly, things happened, picked up some more weight (about 20lbs). Pushing to get them off me.
      I'm not even aiming to be below 200lbs. Frankly, being below 200 would feel REALLY bad for me because I LIKE the amount of muscle I've put on and I don't want to lose it. So, instead of piling on fat tissue, I've decided on turning my fat to muscle. No medications, no whey proteins and the like. Just good ol' protein-focused diet and hitting the gym 5 days/week. So far, it's been going great. I'm not where I was in endurance, but I'm higher in strength, muscle control and overall mobility.

    I remember watching a Ted talk about a movie director interviewing the men activist/awareness campaign happening a couple of years. She originally was going to expose the movement for the misogynist illusion of justice it was (kinda ironic considering modern day). As she questioned more and more member however, she realized there was genuine merit to the men in the statement of these members. Statements related to court cases, sexual harassment, and other legal issues. The director made the realization that she wasn’t questioning to learn, she was questioning to find the reason to hate. With these findings she would go on to make a film about the reality of the movement, and it would gain some traction. Not
    because it was enlightening, not because it was well made, but they saw her as a traitor. It all on a ted talk, and I respect her for the steps she took. But I made the statement that it was too little too late.
    So you can imagine my shock when my counselor said she was sorry for not recognizing my emotional destress sooner. I blocked the apology, but she said that it wasn’t okay. And she apologized again. It still a core memory for me, but I can’t help but be scared of it

I remember talking to some of the guys that did bodybuilding for a living and the "advice" they told me, really woke me up about the whole situation. I cut back on it after I found out about all the other stuff, but I decided to stop when I finally broke less than 5% body fat. Within the week I was sick, within a month I was depressed, and within half of a year I was in the hospital.
    After I got out, I stopped taking supplements, and only worked out when I felt like it. Eventually I had to stop working out all together because the expense of food was too damn high. The peak was 6 full gallons of Milk, 12 dozen eggs, 4 heads of lettuce, over 7lbs of beef, and 13 rolls of bread a week. That was just standard. That's not counting all the shakes, fruits and veggies.

    Cellulite is sort of a problem in that it is a collagen disorder and is typically caused by hormone changes. Typically excess estrogen. So it's pretty common during pregnancy, taking hormone replacement therapy, taking birth control pills, or even menopause where aromatase enzymes are produced via skin and fat cells converting testosterone to estrogen.
    Besides the look, it can also be an indicator that circulation is suffering, muscles atrophying, and expect poor sleep because natural melatonin production will probably be significantly reduced. The look is just a symptom of a greater problem. Problems that do have solutions or at least ways to reduce the impact over time.

    One of the best statements I've heard about how overly obsessed body standards became with being muscular came from an observation about the Mr. Universe bodybuilding competition, considering it's basically the most extreme example: In the 80s, Mr. Universe competitors looked like superheroes. Now they look like the monsters superheroes fight.

    12:26 It's a combination of abusing growth hormone and insulin. Dorian Yates (a former Mr Olympia winner) had an observation on how he'd use growth hormone sparingly until his 1-2 years of competing when he also added insulin which was relatively new at the time, and *_that's_* when he started developing the GH gut that a tonne of elite bodybuilder have today. So it's a combo of using way too much GH and adding insulin to the mix.

      Sounds familiar. Everyone always told me, “Just work on yourself! Then you will be with an even better girl!”
      It doesn’t work like that. Because women don’t work on themselves and the healthy ones get married young. A healthy, committed relationship that lasts a lifetime is a pipe dream no matter how much you improve as a man. Your choices are go from one toxic disaster to another or be alone.

      What's funny is that most women find an average man who is secure and confident a lot more attractive than some insecure gym bro. A good bod might help for random hookups, but your personality and how you carry yourself matters far more in attracting someone who's interested in an actual relationship.

    Women like a guy with abs but what they don't realize is abs are less about ab muscle size and more about low body fat. For most men to have visible abs they need an unhealthy amount of fat. That is they need to be skirting the low end of what is healthy and unhealthy.

    The "smash your own face" is a insurance thing. In my case, the right side of my jaw was smashed in a martial arts tournament. The result being that two teeth are crooked sideways. I basically bite on their side instead their top.
    To fix that, the would need to fix my faw bone first, and it would need to get a bit bigger. I would gain the gigachad jawline from that, basically. It's calculated like 80% of work/costs is not on teeth, and because of that no insurance coverance as it qualifies under "beauty operation".
    Same logic applies, they want a new face covered by their insurance, do they need an accident to happen to it. And it needs to be "bad enough".

    To add on to this subject, I have been going to the gym for almost a year and a half and I've lost roughly 20-30 pounds. Diet plays a major role in my weight management but for 3 months straight of reducing my calorie intake and after I just updated my workout routine last month to do 50-60 minutes of cardio exercise, I barely lost another 9lbs. This is also keeping in mind the muscle I've gained during my workout but 3 whole months of not making any progress due to important events and overcoming the holiday festivities and illness, I'm still losing weight at a very slow but steady pace.
