Daniel hi. I was looking through the tiger barb videos and there you were. I kept these in the late 70s. When they were for a pound.. I stupidly only bought four. Soon there was one. 😉 I'm probably going out Monday to buy eight. Let's hope that this time all these years later I have finally learnt my lesson.lol
Cecelia's Hobbies you're welcome and thank you for the comment. One of these days I'll get a better camera so I can better show how beautiful they are but yes, agreed; the green ones are definately the best!
It's best to keep them in a 29 gallon or larger. I kept about 12 in a 29 gallon for a few years and then moved up to a 55 gallon. Afterwards more than half of my original barbs began to 'age out'. Their colors faded and they became less agile. The two senior males I had who were aging began to get harassed by a younger, more vibrant male who nipped the victims' tails to shreds which further impeded their ability to swim properly. I removed the younger male and allowed the two elderly barbs to die in peace without any further harassment/nipping. I've since purchased 14 much smaller juvenile barbs in purchases of 4 at a time over 3 weeks time to join my three original females and a three smaller males. There have been one or two dust ups that I've witnessed but overall this larger group, mostly smaller juveniles, like to shoal together which gives my tank a nice look and atmosphere versus what was going on previously when that virile male was attacking the older males.
Yeah generally they work it out hey but they certainly will focus on individual fish who are getting older, sick or injured. 29 sounds good. Always aim as big as possible for most fish I reckon.
Rob 93 thanks a lot Rob. Aye they're great wee characters right enough. They sometimes get a bad rap but if they're kept right they're awesome. Definately one of my favourite fish.
I remember my younger brother getting just 2. They attacked the fins on his male guppies. They also were the first to show the water was not clean enough for them by hanging nose down, so they like clean water, but who doesn't. I kept them myself later on , I bought 6 and they were no trouble to the tank mates but I didn't attempt to put a male guppy in with them!
Nice barb , in my village in Central Borneo Indonesia we have to,like snakeskin barb, tiger barb,t-barb and many more ❤️ 👍. Lets we support each other to conservate all kind wild barb 🙏
I'm going to be totally honest and say I'm not sure never having tried it. My gut feeling would be that it'd be okay. They're bigger so able to stick up for themselves and quick so can get out of dodge if required but please don't take that as a for sure.
Great video. You are correct about the clown loaches being a good fish for them ... they will actually school together. I also wondered if they do so because of their coloring being the same.
Aye I'd say that's a big part of it for sure. Possibly also because the Tigers might think twice before being wee bullies to them. If they get a bit nippy the loach they can turn around and say "when I'm a foot long you'll regret that." 😉
so glad i can accross this video tiger barbs are what im going to get for my new 33 gallon hexaganol tank doing a species only how many would you reccomend for this size of tank ... great video 👍🏻
Thanks for the info, i have a species only tank of 15 of them in a 40 gallon breeder ,love watching them.I have had them for about two weeks now ,they still are small about the size of a dime .Thanks for the video i will feed more frequently but smaller portions as u said ,these guys can eat they eat anything i put in there,as soon as i near the tank they go mad they think its always feeding time .
haha, yes, they are like the naught little boys of the aquarium but they're great fun. Glad you are enjoying them and found the video useful then and thank you for your comment. Make sure you give them vegetables of some kind every now and then otherwise they do take a nip at your plants. I came home from work a few time and found two things; missing plant tips and very innocent looking Tigers who couldn't possibly done it on account of their mouths already being full with unmelted butter.
If you are new to plants I would suggest starting with easy plants. Java Fern and Anubias are not too denanding in terms of light or parameters and you don't even need to plant them. You can attach them to rocks, wood and ornaments with either thread or super glu. Any super glu with cyano acrylate as the active ingredient is safe to use in the aquarium and gel type is easier to work with as it doesn't run. ua-cam.com/video/BrJNhW5ipU0/v-deo.html If you're wanting to plant into the substrate I'd maybe look into the Valisneria and Hygrophila for the background and the Cryptocorynes for foreground plants. They are quite hardy, undemanding plants to start with. They might melt while they get used to your water but should bounce back in time. Fertilising them helps. The first plants I mentioned get their nutrients out of the water so products like Flourish, Thrive and Easy Green are great. The others that you plant in the substrate get their nutrients through their roots so root tabs are a good way of supplying those.
Tiger barbs are definitely one of my favorite fish, along side cory. Never had a tank that did not have those two species. Regarding tiger barbs, you have any thoughts about the red glo variant? I have a group of 7, as centerpieces in 120 litre planted tank and they look amazing imo.
Well they look sick, no doubt about that. Should we do it though? Honestly I'm not sure where I sit on that at the moment. Soon as we've taken an animal from the wild and selectively bred them we've meddled with nature but we've been doing that for thousands of years right? I suppose it's a question of where we draw the line hey?
@@DanielKeepingFish It is a complex topic. The first time in the hobby when we saw “modified” fish, were those glass fish (Parambassis ranga) whith that disgusting practice of injecting dyes in the fish bodies. I have stayed away from that fish and I have encouraged as manny ppl as posible to do the same in order to discourage that barbaric practice. I even advocated that cause to the local fish stores and convince them to not order new injected glass fish. In some cases they brought the natural version of the fish and they sold very well. I have a group of 9 in a community tank and they are just great in their natural variant. After that, the genetic modified glo fish appeared in the hobby. In that case I had no problem with that because there was not a physical intervention on the fish, no seringe, no dye or anything like that. The only modification the fish display was a change in color, no modification of the fish life style, behavior or life expectancy, the new coloration is permanent and if they reproduce, the offspring will keep the coloration. In the particular case of glo tiger barbs, my reaction was:”so, science created red tiger barbs?..well, good job science”. There is also the matter of taste, glo tiger barbs come also in the green and yellow variant, but I don’t like them and I don’t keep them. So, in the end, for me at least, in the case of modified fish, is a matter of: are the fish harm as the result of the modification? Great video just what I needed. Am planning a green tiger tank, may put in snakeskin barbs as well but not sure if that will work. Good information , thank you.
Lily Northover thank you. That's sounds great. I've never kept the snakeskin but they look awesome.
