  • Today was a day of outreach and service. Led by ER Physicians, Ameera Haadid and Ashlea Winfield, we taught STOP THEBLEED and relevant CPR Skills to middle and high school studets at Centro A+ Espacios Adolescentes: This is a cultural institution that aims to achieve a greater social and participatory inclusion of adolescents and to support the
development of their potential. Their focus at this facility is on human rights, gender and equity. It is financed by the European Union and has been jointly implemented by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef-Cuba) and the Office of the Historian of Havana. It offers thematic workshops linked to artistic manifestations, communication and new technologies. Exchange with middle school students to teach CPR/first aid lessons was our small contribution which the kids loved. Lunch was then at Santi El Pescador. This was followed by a visit to ELAM to meet international students, including many U.S. students, studying medicine for FREE at ELAM on scholarship. The evening was really special. Though not captured on the video, we spent Day 3 and Day 4 with U.S. students studying medicine in Cuba and provided them teaching on preventative and subspecialty care that they may not learn in their medical school due to differences in care delivery. We finished the evening at Tropicana better known as Paradise Under the Stars. It’s a glimpse of pre-revolution Cuba, where Carmen Miranda, Josephine Baker, Nat King Cole and others entertained the wealthy with Latin dance numbers performed by women with 10-pound headdresses. It’s a stunning pageant filled with music, crazy dance numbers, a few contortionists and acrobats, and showgirls decked out in fabulous costumes.
