You do a % based attack on Gregg by just melle even as a mage so it's not entirely pointless to attack him by constantly hitting him as a mage. Also you can still do reduced damage that will semi help every time you hit him with his shield up.
I have the craftable legendary. It's good up to around level 150, then the uncommon and rare ones start to be better. A level 146 legendary only has about 100k more damage when fully upgraded, which I don't think is worth it.
