In the play, the desirable Bianca is courted by two suitors: Gremio and Hortensio. But Bianca's father determines that his younger daughter will not be married until Katherine, his willful and unpleasant eldest daughter is married.
As such, the two rivals for Bianca's affection devise a plan to find an appropriate match for the "shrewish" Katherine. They settle on visitor Petruchio, who sets about wooing the intractable Katherine.
While Katherine is not receptive to his advances, they are soon affianced. After their wedding, he sets about bending her to his will using a range of cruel techniques.
Bianca is ultimately married to Lucentio, another visitor who has joined Gremio and Hortensio's scheme.
In the end, Katherine gives a long, emotional speech about the role of a wife, urging women to be submissive to their husbands. Petruchio applauds and bids his fellow revelers good night.
The Taming of the Shrew is one of William Shakespeare's most beloved (and most performed) comedies. While modern viewers of the play may find Katherine's submission to her new husband at the end of the play misogynistic, this is likely an accurate depiction of the social mores of the time.
Famous British playwright William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew was written c. 1590-94. This comedy, quite possibly his first, draws on earlier plays and stories dealing with courtship and disguise. Its theme of female submissiveness has made it a controversial work, especially in modern times.
The comedy The Taming of the Shrew contains many important themes, including disguise and deception, as courtship is a masquerade in Padua, where suitors pose as schoolteachers and servants pretend to be lords; gender roles, as men are in charge, while women are forced into obedience that may even alter their personalities; and the idea that wealth conquers all, as on the Paduan marriage market, greed almost always trumps high-minded ideals of love. Important motifs including music and ships, sailing, and trade.

I think it depends to some extent on perception and interpretation. There is reason to believe that much of Katharina's behavior is a defensive reaction to other people -- but particularly her own father -- expecting and insisting all her life that she be more like her younger sister Bianca (who more closely fits the stereotypical ideal for a young unmarried woman) by being compliant, demure, meek, passive, and quiet when Katharina has a very different temperament and probably always has had. One of the things which a lot of people don't realize about Katharina is that she's obviously quite intelligent or else she would not be able to match wits with Petruchio as she does. She's not only an intelligent woman but one with strong emotions and a strong will, and she's learned how to use this to intimidate and manipulate and punish others for the way they've treated her...unfortunately creating a vicious circle because this simply ends up sparking further criticism. Katharina is unquestionably intelligent enough to be aware that as the daughter of a wealthy man, marriage is the only real definition of success open to her (and the fact that she's clearly angry, jealous, and resentful of Bianca because of her suitors implies that marriage is something that Katharina not only has no objection to on principle but might in fact want for herself). Katharina can't respect any man whom she can intimidate -- she needs a husband who's intelligent enough to beat her at her own game and every bit as strong-willed as she is, or else she'll just chew him up and spit out the bones (assuming that he's even willing to stick around long enough). Petruchio actually fits the bill on most of those points. Many modern productions include a lot of physicality during the scene in which Katharina and Petruchio first meet in order to suggest that there's some sexual chemistry between them immediately which Katharina refuses to acknowledge but which Petruchio acknowledges right away -- hinting that once these two iron out the wrinkles, they'll be loving each other as passionately as they initially fought with each other. A lot of modern productions also portray Petruchio's behavior as that of a man who's intentionally giving Katharina a taste of her own medicine and putting the shoe on the other foot.

Why are we teaching such texts to our kids which treat women as dogs. Are we trying to tell our girl child that they are supposed to act like Katherine, who obeys her husband's just and unjust tantrums.

A comedy about women's virtue, not helplessness. Of course, the heroine's behavior is grotesque. It is due to the era in which the actions of the play take place, as well as the genre, comedies exaggerate everything. Nevertheless, if the author's intention is correctly broadcast, then the comedy does not represent a sexist appeal.

Learn from history and how people acted back in those times. Compare them to the people of today, and judge the people of the past. Don’t teach children this is ok, teach them the opposite. But to erase this from the world because it’s sexist, which it absolutely is, is kind of dumb. We should learn from history, not follow the paths idiots in history created.

Gender roles? Sexism of its time? Maybe men and women are just... different creatures? lol. She was miserable before. He got her to accept domestication and she began proselytizing its benefits. Maybe at least some women prefer traditional gender dynamics, being submissive to a stronger man, and are miserable when told they need to be independent and value work above running a home, no?
    Society is ill.
