The song was about his daughter polly passing away.
Love this song! It’s written from the perspective of it being Poppy’s words to him, and Gary has said he wanted it to be a celebration of her being. And it is… to hear it sung live, with the crowd reacting and singing back, is absolutely joyous. What a way to be celebrated and remembered ❤️ In contrast, Dying Inside was written about the loss of his dad and you can hear the raw emotion in his voice as he sings it, even on the album version. It’s a beautiful song. One of the hardest things to watch was back in 2012; just a week after losing Poppy, Take That were performing ‘Rule the World’ at the London Olympics closing ceremony. Nobody expected him to be there, but always the professional and with his wife’s blessing, he was. He sang incredibly, but those who have been fans for years (and who obviously knew of his loss) could hear that he wasn’t singing as ‘normal’. It was lovely to see how Jason, Mark and Howard all supported him, looking to check he was ok the entire way through the performance. Heartbreaking to watch, though.
Lovely to see you enjoying both Gary and Take That’s music; I’ve been a fan from day one, way back in 1990, and it’s always great to see new people appreciate them! Mark Owen, also in Take That, is worth checking out too, having released five albums… three after the band split, and two more since they reformed. Of the remaining band members, Howard Donald recorded, but never released, a song (Speak Without Words) and went on to be a successful DJ (House & Dance music), while Jason Orange did a little acting, then returned to normal life. He left the band in 2014 (and broke my heart!) wanting to step away from fame, and lives a very private life now. And then you already know of Robbie Williams.
Check out Gary Barlow's duet with Robbie Williams called Shame. There was a lot of bad blood when Williams left Take That, and this song reunited them.
