- The Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore has received two complaints against Sterra -- a local water and air filtration company -- for an ad that implies the country's tap water is unsafe for drinking. In a viral video, Sterra Singapore's Instagram commercial has been called out for being misleading and for using scare tactics to sell their products. National water agency PUB has asked Sterra to stop putting out misleading online content and to review their online marketing strategy.

This is not misleading, it’s lying.
Honestly....
I feel they should be slapped with POFMA. But doing so opens a nasty precedent where every misinformation -whether accidental or not; would be slapped with POFMA.
They trying to use the bullshit tactics from USA. Should definitely be POFMA-ed and even fined
Kudos to ntu scientist for pointing out the Truth 👍
i've been drinking water straight from the tap for more than three decades. never had a problem.
I also drink from tap water during NS, but given a choice, it's better to drink boil water.
@@geraldtong4414 given a choice, I'd drink filtered spring water straight from the mountains springs of France, bro 😏 there's really no difference for me in terms of tap or boiled water 😆
@@geraldtong4414 With regards to military facilities and training practices, it is always better to drink boiled water unless boiling the water will not make it potable. There may be some facilities where the pipes are dated and not maintained at a higher standard due it being a sensitive facility (as with the case in 2020).
Basically if you grow up drinking tap water, and have no issues, then it is fine because your body has grown used to it. But it may not be true for a person who have a less healthy body or is not from Singapore.
But it could be just a taste thing, since some people prefer hard water or carbonated water. ((For reference, Singapore's water is considered soft water))
@@albinoasesino Are you saying better to drink from boil water during NS? Bro, you understand no choice means? Water parade take water from tap water you understand. Water parade got timing you understand.
@@geraldtong4414 Never was the conversation about 'no choice'. You are shifting the conversation to a specific scenario instead of a general case.
Though I apologize if it seemed like I was targeting you, it was not my intention, but rather a general comment.
But to answer your question, depending on the source of the water, it could be rendered safer to drink by boiling it.
Local brands like Prism+ & Sterra are notorious for using false advertising & fear of missing out tactic. Do complain to the authorities & boycott them to stop this nonsense!
Sterra must be taken to task for false information
No false information present since it wasn't mentioned that it was Singapore tap or Singapore tap water. You assumed.
Maybe u dun really understand english…. Go listen carefully to the CNA news reporter talking
@@ahbai1976 Maybe you didn't understand. I did. CNA was wrong. Did you watch the original Sterra ad? I bet you didn't.
Nope. Sterra is marketing the product here in SG. Their ad was targeted for people living in SG. The ad heavily insinuates that the water being featured in the ad is coming from singapore. Not only that, the images they showed as mentioned in the report are not even tap water samples but likely to be pond water samples (which would obviously contain many microorganisms). But they are making it appear in the ad that the microscopy images shown were from a water sample taken directly from a faucet. That's balatant lying.
time to sterra-lise your marketing team.
their dehumidifier ad is full of crap as well as
Yeah agreed.
Those filters inside these water purifiers actually contain many times more bacterias than our tap water; unless you replace those filters every few days.
Yep. For most part, they serve their purpose. In this case, a simple filter is basically a barrier to prevent bacteria and other microorganisms of certain size from passing through.
Since they are already in the water, and are prevented from going through, where do you think they end up? They are still stuck behind the filter. Thus if you don't replace the filters regularly, they are just clogging up behind the filter and multiplying.
In theory, you could replace them every day with a new one. That's basically driving a newly made car every day because after driving it once it loses its performance (in-fact not just newly made, but before it ever left the factory because the factory probably has some kind of performance test to ensure that it is within specs which would reduce the mint quality).
But realistically, if the company supplying the purification system did do their job in testing and put up a guarantee, then you only need to replace the filters according to their recommended schedule for some amount of years before replacing the purification system itself.
Agree. There are studies that actually show how installing water filters can actually make it more dangerous as the filters over time can actually be become breeding grounds for microorganisms.
Good expose. Many ads/postings/news/marketing promos are misleading/inaccurate. Take time to check /research. Don't just consume/accept whatever is given. Gosh. Such a toxic era.
I had no clue who Clarence Sim was before but I'm a fan now!
Sterra shld be fined heavily. This is intentional lying.
they should be heavily fine.
The authorities should put a heavy fine for misleading ads. Heavy fine in a range of 100-500K.
These companies will think twice to cross the line

At first I thought a Korean face was the spokesperson of this ad
While the water cleaning from pub is safe to drink, the issue would be from pub to your house, it passes through many different kinds of pipes that have different age which can have clay, rust or algae inside hence, it really depends on your pipe maintenance and how old they are. So filtering it basically cleans out those which the water picked up while enroute to your residence
😂😂😂Sterra channel advertised their purified water as "Korean Water". In China and Korea, influencers/celebrities who endorse unethical advertisement/products will end their endorsement deal and refund their endorsement fees to be socially responsible to their fans. In Singapore, you can see these greedy and unethical ah lian/ah beng influencers just quietly not saying anything. SG really has a long way to go in terms of ethics.
Same as how our local brand, Charles & Keith, recruited that dishonest Filipino girl Tik Toker as their ambassador even though she clickbaited her video that she is using a "luxury bag" and then lied about her poor "financial background" but was found out later her father earns $10K a month and she has other Tik Tok videos showing her using other products.
remeber KANGEN WATER yeah this one some more, i saw an product placement of it in a hotel in sg
nb during NS in Brunei, we collect water from river and drink leh
I drank water filled into jerrycan from boots washing area, guess my days are numbered
Jerrycan are mostly not washed after use, cannot imagine if it's cut opened got mold inside or not...
I drink directly from the tap.
How old is your building? Do you have a tummy?
Try to avoid, come out from NEWater extremely clean but pass through block pipes, don’t know if rusty or not. Use a filter
I drink SG tap water without boiling for 15+ years.
Any over advertising of a brand should automatically be a red herring.. for eg, I write off prism+ too as it also advertises.. simple as that
They're supposed to be the same company, Sterra and Prism+
most things that need influencer to push ads are low tier. its just common sense. if is so good, why need influencers to push?
Till you notice they're all the same company 🤯 😉
During NS i also drink tap water
Even reservist too. No problem at all 🤣🤣🤣
I always boiled the water from taps or dispensers water 😁
This company information is slandering the standard of our tap water. A lot of elder with little info and knowledge will believe them.
Sterra reminds me of the olden days mlm where they sell u some sort of magical mattress with magnetic properties that claims to "cleanse" u from illness.
That burnnnn, people who are posting don't even know their basic biology.
This unethical company even tell people that will die if don't use their air purifier

Actually Sterra has been making a lot videos by borrowing other online videos which is not related to Sterra but at the end says Sterra can solve these problems.
Uh oh..
water so pure even the marketer drink it from their own toilet
I get sore throat if I drink tap water over a period. That's why I boil it. While water may be on spec before entering into distribution, the immediate piping in your home could be old and heavily deposited with materials. Singapore's treated water is considered soft water but even PPB levels of minerals will still build up over decades that could give the water a weird taste or worse case scenario, discolored (I'd seen it before). For context, 1 PPM = 1000 microgram/liter, our contaminant maximum spec in the case of Aluminium in H2O for example is 0.020 microgram/litre. That said, you "might" benefit from filters in homes with old piping.
In most cases, you don't need filters. Even if you have them at home, replace/backwash them at regular intervals as recommended by vendor for optimum performance. IMO, boiling water for personal consumption is still the safest way to go.
FYI, I used to manage and operate water treatment systems for industrial purposes. So I'm not exactly clueless either. PUB water is extremely safe because we treat it beyond WHO standards.
Where is the fine????
Disgusting scare tactic from sterra
I say it's a crime tat it appears so much in my youtube ad feeds😂😂
should ban these company who heavily use influencer.
they should sue the company for smearing
How do they live with themselves lying to others? Do they even have a soul
Sterra ads are annoying and kept appearing on my social media feeds.. relentless
This company has been doing this since day 1
More afraid of the rust in the pipes than bacteria
The company should be sued for fraudulent misrepresentation.
Their marketing copy have broken grammar. 😂
I drank from my toilet taps without any issue so far
Foreigners may think that Singapore’s a third world country
Sterra should receive POFMA 😅
Never trust a brand that’s use a lot of “influencers”...another brand is PRISM, Nv talk about their technology
Lol Short on Sterra
POFMA
😂. Fake claim no action in court ????? 😊.
Businesses are greedy and liars!!
I have a bad impression of their way of marketing. they're fake their reviews before, and still claim is was real, tsk tsk , now this, can they more honest on doing business?
Isn't it just blatant false advertising? Not just Sterra, but most other water dispenser companies touting how unclean our water here is without their product. And can we also go after those bogus 'alkaline' water dispenser companies for their false claims?
Gen Z era. Worst is Prism. All the “influencers” they hired to promote is just awfullll 🤮
People still buy sterra products though
Sterra/Prism/Omnidesk
All are the same company, all rebadging items from China. Most of the money spent is on bogus marketing and scare tactics, not engineering. You pay more than the original item if you were to buy from the OEM directly.
Companies that sell tap filters or water purification systems here are dumb. They should instead venture into africa.
Sterra is greedy
can the authorities fine these misleading companies?
The sterra air purifier ad is just as exaggerated and misleading. Anyway, alot of their marketing tactics are damn off. Any well read consumer wont fall for it. I dont even think they have any tech inhouse. Definitely just an oem from china/korea and stuff it with loads of marketing.
Glad i never engaged them. Haha
Sabo 😂
Boycott Sterra
Sterra? China brand? 😂
Sue them for defamation, sue them till their pants drop
In other words there is bacteria in New water, even if it's recycled. That's why offices use mineral bottles
You are making the assumption that bottled water contains 0.000% trace of microbiological material.
What makes you think bottled water has no organism? Alot of bottled water are actually tap water
It's very immoral to make false claims. As an example, the opposition parties have been issued numerous pofmas for doing that. They certainly have a lot to learn from the PAP which is the only responsible and effective party in s'pore.❤❤

I think everyone should stop getting their panties in a twist and start some critical thinking. The ad never specified the tap water is from Singapore.
