I vaguely remember riding this as a kid back in the eighties. I have not been back since but I'm planning a trip this year. I am excited yet apprehensive about visiting Epcot again efter all these years.
Great video! One of the better ones I have seen of this attraction. Worked as cast member at this attraction, in early, mid nineties. I so miss it. Such fun to work at the unlaod area, and marvel at all the awed expressions people had coming off the ride. Definitely the best scenic ride Disney ever did!
Wow, I guess I'm not the only one that remembers the orange smell. That's what I remember most about this ride. Growing up in Florida, I was lucky to go to EPCOT a lot. I just went there three weeks ago with some friends, not the same park I remember as a kid.
I vaguely remember this from when I was a kid. I went to the EPCOT Center with my parents at least twice in the 80s: once around 84 or 85 (the shirt I have from then was pretty small, so I couldn't have been any older than 5), and again in 90 shortly after Universal Studios opened. I think we went to Disney & EPCOT once between then, maybe 87 or 88. I'd like to go to Orlanda again sometime soon, but it seems like a lot has changed from 20 years ago. Anywho, thanks for preserving this on film.
I loved this ride so much. Thank you for the video and for uploading this. I used to love the part were you could smell the oranges. This brings back so many memories. I miss this ride very much.
WOW!! I was 2 months old when you shot this video. It really didn't change much until it was replaced by mission space. GREAT VIDEO it reminds me of all the family vacations we took.
What a shame that Horizons no longer exits. I never had opportunity of take that ride. When I was to EPCOT in Spring 1995, Horizons was close by repairs, and when I returned on 2009, Horizons had been replacet by Mission: Space.
I was Epcot last week for the first time since 1984. I was racking my brain about this ride. I thought I hallucinated the whole 1984 experience but soon realized they pulled this magnificent pavilion for the Mars one. This is when Epcot was the real deal. Thanks for the video. Brings back memories
My family just came back from WDW a few weeks ago. My mother Skyped me the other day and said, "wow, no wonder Horizons is gone...it's not the future anymore...look at us, talking face to face on our laptops!!"
The Narrator Sounds like Hal Smith. I can see why they called it the sequel to Carousel of Progress. I think they incorporated a lot of the elements of Horizons into the New Revamped Spaceship Earth.
This is what I miss about the old school Disney.... I hate some of this new stuff they are coming out with. I am all about some Walt Disney World and go every year. I would like to see these old classics come back in the future.
I so wish they did not rip this one down...I understand people want thrill rides, then go to another park.. Epcot is just not the same anymore... This and World of Motion were the best they had...
I think WDW's next park should be "RetroLand" Where they bring back all the old rides we remember from our childhood (Horizons, 20K Leagues, Mission to Mars etc.)
In the Mission in Space attraction in Horizons place, all you wait in long line for is nothing but a tiny five-minute motion-simulater in place of a long twenty-minute dark ride. >:(
Why do I remember something in Horizons (or EPCOT) where you got to choose your drink. I remember seeing a button for coke, or pepsi, or sprite, I don't know. I'm trying to find out where that memory is from.
@TheProduction101 Unfortunately for this one, and for World of Motion, they aren't coming back if the sponsors don't come back, or otherwise ask to bring the original ride back (GE was responsible for Horizons, GM for World of Motion - GM for whatever reason decided to 'update' to 'Test Track'... and I have no idea who's got the Pavilion currently known as Mission: Space right now... I know HP and Sony each sponsored it at one point)
Thank you @mcjaco23 so much for this video! @MrBlockishMark, I respectfully disagree with you. There is no documentation on the sinkhole theory, no photos or anything. With all the public outcry Disney would have released at least a photo to save face. Hoot & Chief at MVT have photos of ceiling tiles showing water damage by negligence due to the ride's imminent closing. The roof could have been repaired. But where's the evidence about the other so-called structural problems with Horizons?
They recycled "It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" (0:59) ! It's the theme of Carousel of Progress in Magic Kingdom now instead of "Now is theTime..."
I wouldn't say it was the best, anything with a "vision of the future" is really hard to update. Besides MISSION: SPACE is the same concept as Mission To Mars that used to be in Disneyland, expect it has a more realistic and logical approach.
Are you kidding me?! Jeremy Irons was awesome!! Walter Cronkite creeps me out anyways.(not kidding) At least he's a heck of a lot better than Judith Dench!
the 80s were great. Thanks for sharing - EPCOT looked amazing back then.
I remember horizons when I was real little, horizons was my favorite ride at Epcot. My fovorite part was the peach smell. =)
Brings back memories of Epcot! I worked there in the '80's!! Thanks for this video.. It was better back then!!

Brings back so many memories im so sad this ride is gone! but not from my heart x
thanks ever so much....brought back many memories. big hug.....

Horizons was always our family's favorite ride at Epcot...I hate that my daughter won't get to experience it! Thank you for this reminder :D

Best EPCOT ride EVER!!! First time I was there I rode it 4 times. RIP
This was my favorite ride. Epcot isn't the same without it....
Brings back great memories, thank you for posting.

Oh the orange smell!! As a child of the '80s I thought it smelled more of Fruit Loops. A smell-memory I'll never forget >>extra-warm-fuzzy
Thank YOU!
Yes, the orange scent was always a cool effect. I used to look forward to that as a kid.
I loved this ride so much. Thank you for the video and for uploading this. I used to love the part were you could smell the oranges. This brings back so many memories. I miss this ride very much.

holy jesus this is amazing! i need to go back

sooo many memories!
I loveed ride and got to go on the first time I went to Disneyworld which was in 98
I miss Horizons terribly! I vaguely remembered the original male voice over for the 'choose your own' ending. I'm glad I found it here.
It was a great attraction
Very good job putting together this video! Interesting to hear some of the earlier narration spiels.
If only you could have captured the orange smell. Thanks for the memory. I love Mission Space, but you know...

ohh and picking the little video clip at the end was my favorite to =)

I would love that!
This video contains some of the original narration. Very interesting.

Epcot should bring this ride back.
Still exists :)
I so wish they did not rip this one down...I understand people want thrill rides, then go to another park.. Epcot is just not the same anymore... This and World of Motion were the best they had...

Amen @leedavidt and don't forget the Dreamfinder and Magic Journeys too!
so depressed. wish i could have experienced this attraction. :(
i was born november 1984 :)
@powerpup97 And a year before me!!!
EPCOT used to have this one "exhibit" where it had like all the types of Coke and other soda's from around the world. Most of them were so nasty!
It was an amazing ride experience, but I'm gonna take a leap of faith and say Mission: SPACE was a pretty good replacement...
I would have enjoyed this ride..reminds me of Spaceship earth..
Strange. I swear I could smell oranges around 3:35 into the video. ;c)
This video was made two months before I was born!

One of the best at WDW. Pity they had to replace it with MS.
yea I like Jeremy Irons alot
They recycled "It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" (0:59) !
It's the theme of Carousel of Progress in Magic Kingdom now instead of "Now is theTime..."
maybe they can re do something like this... maybe a mix of Meet the Robinsons and Wall-E ?
I wouldn't say it was the best, anything with a "vision of the future" is really hard to update. Besides MISSION: SPACE is the same concept as Mission To Mars that used to be in Disneyland, expect it has a more realistic and logical approach.
I run a UA-cam channel based off of abandoned/old attractions at WDW. May I use some of this video with credit?
yeah my bad not peach lol
Sad that this and the World of Motion were replaced by two mediocre thrill rides.
Are you kidding me?! Jeremy Irons was awesome!! Walter Cronkite creeps me out anyways.(not kidding) At least he's a heck of a lot better than Judith Dench!
you mean orange smell
