  • In this video I bring you along as I diagnose and repair a Chevy Trailblazer that has a blower fan that will not shut off. I show you why not to use a NAPA # BR532. Please refer to a shop manual for the proper repair and testing procedure.

    I love to hear you speak the truth about the after market parts like that. I've ran into it myself and it makes me swear through the rest of the job and usually half way through the next day, telling everyone about it. I would also like to let you know, that in the fields of plumbing and hvac they are experiencing the same thing, with the same results as you just experienced. Wasted time, modifications that shouldn't have been needed and also test the level of your creativity are usually the result. It's the way of manufacturing and until some big shot decides he can make more money by having everyone buy his parts because they are manufactured correctly, it isn't going to change. But keep ranting about it because were ok your side Eric. Thanks for the videos bud. Jpol.

    Hi, I ordered part # ACDelco 15-81773 GM original equipment heating and air conditioning blower control module from Amazon.com. $56.82 plus shipping and sales tax, if any. After watching your very good video, I was aware of the possible issue with the blower motor lead being too short. This part number had more than adequate length to fit in the clip behind the blower motor housing and reach the motor connection. It was an easy install in a friend's 2004 Trailblazer. What a great job on the video, and I agree with your comments on the lack of support when a part does not fit. Although, I have to say, without challenges to overcome, how satisfying would life be. It should be right, though. Keep smiling and I'll check back on my next adventure.

Ended up figuring it out that I could use one with a 5 pin socket with a 5 pin pigtail (supplied), duh only 2 pins hot plus small purple one needed, plus splicing, Anyway the dealer part wasn't even AC/DELCO, product of Mexico/Korea with GM approved gold stamps all over box. Thanks again

    I don't even work in the field, but I've always done all of my own repairs/maintenance and also for family and friends. I probably should have become a tech but i've always felt the best way to ruin a hobby, is to do it for 40 hrs every week. The only decent aftermarket is usually the OEM supplier, sometimes you can get lucky and get a truly improved part, but not often! My pet peeve is reboxing. Napa didn't make that part, so why the heck did they put it in a napa box? Carquest is actually even worse for this... I have yet to get a re boxed part I felt was OE quality, although they all "say" they are... I know you don't have time for such things Eric, but you should give rock auto a shot sometime when time allows. You can choose the grade and manufacturer, so once you figure out the ones that last you're ahead of the game. (well until the supplier cheaps out) . I know way up north here in canada even with shipping rates often doubling the part cost, it's usually still cheaper then going to my local parts store!

    Hi Eric
    I have just started watching your videos and have been enjoying them a lot.
    With regards to this repair I actually think there might have been a easier fix for your problem.
    It appeard to me in the video that as you mentioned turning the unit around would have given you enough length to complet the repair.
    If you had trimmed the extra mounting holes off the resistor and only used the one hole you needed for the screwI think it would have fit.
    This would have saved a lot of time but not made a great video.
    Keep up the good work. and remember IF I can See it So Can You (LOL)

    I worked as a Ford tech briefly - now I do software development. We will get around to those bugs someday :).
    I learned that Factory parts always save time. Time is money. Even though I drive older cars I try to get Motorcraft for electrical stuff and filters. My explorer has a similar blower resistor(well power transistor) that fails. I think it can only come from Ford.
    I'm sure you know lots of NAPA stuff is repackaged Dorman, or sometimes Standard Auto Parts (which is BWD at Advance) and Standard supposedly has two grades of product, I think that reflects in the NAPA line too. That stuff is really hit and miss. Didn't have such great luck with aftermarket bosch 02 sensors either. I do think dorman makes a good aftermarket intake manifold, at least for the Ford 4.6L. It is made in the US, and I spoke with one of their product managers about it. They changed the design though recently, and you need a bit of RTV to seal it up right. Of course it was not in the included directions, so I had to redo it to fix a nice vac leak. The gasket had a nice dimple where the divot was. Installed many of them for myself, friends and family, no issues.
    Napa does stand behind their products. Every year I exchange a parking brake cable for my explorer. The loop breaks off at the lever, I use it every day. They are happy to swap it. A few years ago they had bad alternators, I went thru 4 of them and they admitted there is an issue. This was their premium new NNE line Ended up getting one of their remans and no problems since. The new crap was made in China. Made in USA aftermarket don't mean anything as you know...problems is they design for as many models as possible and you end up with the mess you are dealing with. Don't feel bad though, even the Ford OEM replacement blower controller kit requires you to splice wires on some models. There are two kits, one with and one without a harness....but no fitment issues like that.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  9 років тому

      alb12345672 Oh yeah, ya basically summarized everything I have thought. I knew the relationship between BWD , Standard, NAPA and Dorman.. I have never had a problem with NAPA Standing by stuff when it fails, it is always warranty labor pay that I can never get. OE is hard for me to get same day, almost never happens.Usually a 1 day wait and if I had to get everything OE I would be days behind on every repair. As far as my own vehicle I only buy stuff from Honda.

    • @alb12345672
      @alb12345672 9 років тому

      I'm friends with the commercial guy at my local advance and he said many of the aftermarket parts are for older cars and meant to last maybe 1-4 years, likely the car is gone by then or the shop had a six month warranty and the lifetime part warranty is moot. Many shops won't even bother with it tell the customer, or the customer will just go somewhere else.
      That balances out with the DIYers who may keep their car another 10 years....and some parts may actually last. So they do OK. Ford,Honda, etc warranty their parts 1 year, and I've never taken advantage of their warranty(Hmm..maybe once?). Unless their is some defect I have original parts on my Fords going on 20 years(some of my o2 sensors are that old and have a perfect waveform). Lifetime warranty means nothing.
      Does advance pay labor? The guy here said it depends, but they do reimburse pros for a POS part.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  9 років тому

      Advance does pay labor claims up to 90 days and only $50 an hour on book time.

It was a reman from from cardone. So I called Autozone because I know it has a lifetime warranty. Well The Autozone by the house where I got the dizzy from said they could not find the warranty info in their computer. So I asked them to try a different number. They said they where busy and told me to call back and then hangs up. So i stop at another Autozone on the way from the gym.and they where able to find the warranty information. Here is the kicker they have none in stock at any store and I have to pay 222 dollars up front so they can order so i can warranty it. It makes me crazy mad that I have to pay for it then warranty it and then bring back the old part to get my 222 dollars back. Then I look on Amazon and see it for 125.dollars rand new. Same brand. Way under 100 dollars on ebay.

    That part has been "Muntzed". Ever heard of "Mad Man Muntz"? He was originally a used car dealer in Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s. When television came along he figured he could make money there too. So he opened a factory and started making TV sets. Which he sold for the absolute lowest price. Which he did by making the sets just as cheaply as possible and still have them work. Electronics engineers used to laugh that Muntz would take a working TV design and start snipping resistors out of it until it stopped working, then put the last resistor back in. Each resistor saved one cent on the price of making the TV.
    Someone saved one inch of wire. Assuming those are #10 wires made with real copper, these days that is probably 5 cents saved on that part! And it still probably fits about 50% of the original applications.

    I am glad that after all of that , the new one was good . lol . Done one not long ago . I believe a BWD and it just plugged right in , yes plug and play , but sure you know that and that makes this re wiring the car so much more aggravating. If only there was copper centered butt connectors . . It is funny how some of the simplest jobs turn out to be the most unnecessary complicated , time consuming jobs ever. I used to call the manufacturers and tell them ( nicely of course ) how they make my life miserable , but they do not care , they really don`t. I think they have fun at it . Which reminds me , i need to do a video on a company with outstanding customer service , not a company with highest dollar tools , but i like the tool . And they done me right. Oh and do not worry I got this one for you , Now on my way to, My local Napa guy to scream and scream and scream at him about this BR532 crap for you , that should take care of it so this will not happen to you again . lol

  • @ernestworkman
    @ernestworkman 7 років тому

    The reason the part is diffrent then what you took out is they found out the origanal would burn out . the three wire set up could not handle the power going to it over time so they went to a seven wire plug . It would have been nice if they would have put a plug on the wires that you splice into the main wiring harness to the control unit in the dash insted of cut and splice .

    eric amazon has some kick ass heat shrink soder ones called sure seal they are heat shrink like the butts conectors but instead of crimping when you use your crack torch the soder melts and than the heat shrink shrinks. but i ran into this same simular problem with my 454ss tail pipes the muffler outs are 2 1/4 and two tails out the left side so i ordered the walker pipes they were 2 inch pipes so i called napa and said no there 2 1/4 the walker dig says so even down to i need the 2 1/4 clamps x 4 two for muffler and two for the duel exzust bracket i told napa well i do have my free harbor fright tape you bget with anything you buy there but its sure says 2 inches i did take wood working in school as well as car o liner serfied so i can even read mm. i called walker and they said they discountiued the 2 1/4 pips cause chevy used the two inch pipes on all the other trucks in the 90s with the duel tails so they keep the part number for the two and not the 2 1/4 now i know the extra 1/4 isnt gona make a huge difference in hp but now i need to drive to the niagara falls again and get two adapters and more clamps or just weld the adapters in the tail pipes what a pain in the arse as well as niagara falls napa mow sends you every varable part listed, and we the manchic has to deturmand the correct or best fit witch is good until you return the parts you didnt use than the young punks there piss and moan, i ask them if they were femail thats why god gave women two sets of lips to pisgs and moan.. ok that joke was uncalled for. but all the old timers at this napa retired and now young punks that dont know a screwdriver from a hammer. they just are keyboard smart key punching fingers on my other chevy 1998 i needed a fuel filter same on all but cause i told him it was a 5.7 and not a 350 he said his computer dont list a gmc 1998 k 1500 with a 5.7 just a 262 505 350 454 so i was nice enough to teach him the leiters for the inches he raddled off . he was very rude about my lesson so its the same everywhere.. i see on your test drives you on rute 415 anywhere around wellsville alfreid state college i went there in 91-93 for autobody

    i am hunting down a fornt blower motor not turning on. customer complaint. what i found blower motor making noise when low (i put outside source power to it), #4 bcm fuse was blown, #13 radiator fan heat distorted but not blown yet. front blower motor relay missing #32. i moved the #20 spare relay to the #32 spot. still no go.then i moved another relay to make sure its not the relay. and still no go. i got a new resistor module for the blower and still no go. now im going to pull the button crontrol unit and check that.
    the fresh air motor works sometimes also. so there is power at the resistor, and ive checked got under 12v.
    any thoughts on this 05 chrysler Pacifica

    I worked in auto parts, before AutoZone advanced and whatever, gone are the old counterman who sometimes knew more than the mexhanic, we worked the old fashioned way with millions of books that you had to manually cross reference if needed, computers were just starting to become popular so parts companies still put out books and catalogs on computer software, I don't know if the catalogs are st ill being published.

    Our blower motor works intermittently. The heat gauge does not move. Have checked wires at the thermostat and ac they are good. Did not see any bad connections. Could the module be causing this problem. The vehicle is not overheating. Some times it cools other days it does not. Have also noticed that air does not come out the dash vents on occasion.

      Except it can't be real solder in there, Eric has mentioned those before and they all went bad on him at about the one year mark, so hope your mileage is better. I've never seen that type and didn't know about the hot glue lined, heat shrink butt connectors either. I prefer to use the un-insulated crimp on butt connectors since it grips much better than plain jane squeeze but I dope them with RTV silicone going together and fill the divet too. Jury is still out on if this is worth a hoot or not - we'll see. They do offer heat shrink tubing with hot glue liner these days, that's a real nice touch on a genuine solder joint.
