- Igor Stravinskij (1882-1971):
"Oedipus rex" (1927)
Neil Rosenshein (Edipo), Felicity Palmer (Giocasta), Claudio Desderi (Creonte), Anton Scharinger (Tiresia / Messaggiero), Justin Lavander (Il Pastore), Jean Rochefort (Narratore)
Coro N.O.S. Orchestra del Concertgebouw di Amsterdam
Direttore: Bernard Haitinik
Amsterdam, 1984
This production closely meets Stravinsky's known conception of how he wished the work to be staged. I first heard the work when I was in high school and not a year has gone by without hearing/seeing it. I am now 80 years old. This is one of the two finest videos that I know of, the other being that by Ozawa in Japan. It is commercially available. What a pity that this 1984 production is to be found only here - thank goodness for UA-cam. Stravinsky's Oedipus engages my mind, grabs my heart, and reduces me to tears.I recommend to those interested in hearing a performance conducted by Stravinsky that they find the 1952 Cologne, Germany, recording with Peter Pears in the title role. Originally released on CBS Columbia it is now found in excellent digital sound on several European boutique labels. The 1952 performance is far superior to the SONY reissue of the stereo recording made about 1964 by "sincere" but bland performers in Washington, DC. I am so grateful to find this Amsterdam performance on UA-cam.
I saw a perfect performance in 1968 in Detroit. My late father had bought a vinyl of this back in my childhood and I have been obsessed with the opera since. Now I am in ICU and I'm glad I saw it. I lost my vinyl and so this amazing performance helps me live my last days in peace.
I hope you recover good sire ❤❤🌻🥀💐💐
Thanks so much. I love this production more than anything. And I mean it. It's like the fourth time I've watched it in the last 10 years
It's shocking how expressive the masks actually are. Everything about this production is exquisite.
i discover that strange but great opera, thank you !!

Very good. I didn't immediately associate this music with Haitink, but very good nevertheless. I like also that it is a french narrator, and that it is the excellent Rochefort.
Is there more than one version of the line retro for this opera/oratorio?
I ask this because the video does not match an LP recording I have from the mid-late 1970s nor does it match the synopsis of the work in Wikipedia. (My Lp matches the Wikipedia synopsis.)
In a documentary Stravinsky said that he asked the librettist to write a banal libretto and that he, Stravinsky, didn't like the first two librettos he wrote and he the librettist wrote 2 more to satisfy Stravinsky because he liked him. I have absolutely no idea if the prior two librettos (which should be in French?? i think?) are out there though.
Extraordinario
Thrilling.
I saw an impressive performence in Boston in 1972
