I know Cowboy Jen through 2 handshakes! During covid I asked my grandma if she remembered anything about the lesbian separatist movements in the 70s (my grandma was a an active feminist back then, and I once heard her telling my dad that she has had crushes on women in her life), and she referred me to her old lesbian friend Mary, who wrote back that she loves engaging in "intergenerational lesbian fun". So me and my girlfriend ended up having two zoom calls with her where she basically told us her life story and all of these historical gay events she participated in, like being in San Francisco when Harvey Milk was killed, attending the Michigan womens festival and doing different kinds of gay and anticapitalist activism. And we asked about butch-femme culture, which was kind of looked down on by the 70s lesbian feminists, and she mentioned knowing Cowboy Jen! Getting in touch with our history and respecting our gay elders is really cool and important!
Mac, if it makes you feel better, surrogates that are small in frame can carry for parents who are very tall/big and the baby will still only grow to what the surrogate can maintain, it's not determined just by the genetics, but by the blood, oxygen & nutrient supply of the surrogate :)

But I am very femme but always feel excluded from queer spaces because I don't fit any bi stereotypes >__> (And i live in Calgary too! im wearing a bi hoodie right now and i'll get nothin)
My mom is 68 and came out when in the late 80s and she and her friends were that generation you're referencing. Like 90s mullet black dress pants white colared shirt with a black vest, Volvo driving, march attending lesbians. And hearing Ashley say "I fuck with you" to that community just really made me feel good. They didn't get all the nuance we get now or some of the intersectionality but they also had 0 fucking safety, rights, public tolerance and were the type of community to get off their buts and show up for shit ppl take for granted today. I'm a sis straight girl but I am also a fierce feminist who now gets to teach my mom about assumptions she doesn't see. I would NEVER have had the eyes to see these issues I do without my mom and those women who were my leather jacket wearing babysitters.
As someone who was named with the "2 names hyphened" last name (Speer-Remes). I have liked it as it has been a conversation starter many times, like literally yesterday I talked about it. Though throughout my life, when I sign up for things or are on lists, I have had people use either just the first one of my last names or just the second one, so it can get quite confusing. So now that I am almost 24 and am starting to imagine what my future will look like with a partner, it is hard since I really love the idea of combining last names (either with a hyphen or literally merging 2 last names). This is obviously hard to do since I already have 2 last names. But, one idea that I have started to think about is actually creating a new last name with my partner, to each have and to pass down to our possible children. Thus truly embracing the Chosen Family concept :)
I can totally relate to Ash's drug experience. I felt so good after my one surgery I ever had. You know it's good stuff if you are waking up in a tiled room, naked in a bed that isn't yours without any familiar faces around and you're just like "Huh, the bed is really fluffy and - oh, how the light through that tiny window falls on that wall is so pretty" xD
My wife and I combined our last names, and we, in fact, do not make our own granola. 🤣 We consider our joint last name an upgrade and no one else has it 😄 (plus we get compliments, it's def a confidence boost).
Suggestion Ashley, if you and your girlfriend both have 5 letter last names with the same 3 middle letters (avi), then switching one letter would give your kid 80% of each of your last names in one name (Gavis or Davin). They're both real last names and differences may not be phonetically noticeable dependent on the pronunciation, albeit this could technically be considered made up. Not a recommendation though, but a suggestion! When you introduced her on the other secret podcast, it was the first thing I noticed oops
I really loved your discussion about feeling included about queer spaces, especially from the perspective of someone who is older and feels that they aren't included/respected by younger queer ppl. I've had personal experience with this myself as a 19yo neurodivergent queer and gender diverse/trans masculine individual. There's a whole complex culture, communication style, and clothing expression within the community of queer gen Z that has developed that I can't quite seem to fit into. This isn't a critic of all queer young people, obviously, my closest friends are queer and trans and I don't know what I would do without them. However, many queer spaces have made me feel like I'm too autistic for them, not thin enough, don't 'dress cool' or 'act cool' enough, etc to really be included in their niche space, which I think defeats the purpose of queer-friendly spaces.
46:25 this is really interesting because in the subculture of the trans community, older trans people have so so much respect. They are well loved and cherished within our community.
Oh.yep. happy Valentine's Day to everyone. Ashley your eyes are super beautiful and thanks for all the laughs, Alayna your personality is equally as gorgeous as your face.... And Mak, you're attractive on a level that makes every human question their sexuality, you just have it.... 🎤 Drop
As a listener this was a great episode such truths and comfort talk happy to be single now 🎉two weeks single, I need six months and then I’ll be ready to go out
Alayna's inability to burp might be RCPD. Another UA-cam creator I watch has this and it started to negatively impact her health. The treatment is Botox into the affected muscle. Also yes I think pads come in larger sizes than they used to. Extra heavy overnight is perfect for my fat ass with a heavy flow. Speaking of elder queers, I went to a Xena convention last year. I had never seen so many older queer women in my life! It was magical ❤
I’m with Ashley. As someone who lives in a major city with a lot of queer femmes, I don’t feel lesbian enough either and I use to play soccer, am a vegan, own cats and have tattoos 🤣
Ashley telling us to go listen to Joe Rogan would have made me do a spit take if I had a drink in my mouth. I think that's among the funniest bits I've seen on ChoFam...
I love Alayna's take of "I am wo much of a woman, this pad cannot *contain* me!" lol Also, fun fact: Ashley being more athletic than she thought has a little root in science, actually. Fidgeting is a very impactful "activity" in that it activates certain nerve pathways that increase your resting metabolism and that way have an impact on your calory burn rate. Studies show a significant effect of that in fidgety people versus non-fidgeters.
My wife & I chose a new last name. We didn’t make it up, but we went through a couple generations of our family names & chose the one that we liked best & changed both of our last names to the new one. We ended up settling on her paternal grandmother’s maiden name.
My parents have a 15 inch heigh difference and it's absolutely hilarious. My mom is 5' and my dad is 6'3". She has to run to keep up with his normal walk.
I like the feel if having the last name come from the carrying mother. I suppose it's a bit of an analytical approach, but the name following the blood line makes sense. Her blood is growing the baby. ❤
Ashley, look for "infinity pads". Or something similar..they are ultra thin, but extremely absorbent and come in sizes that you would probably approve of. They also are so much more comfortable.
It probably wasn’t that with your tootiness cause they’ve probably taken the cervical route, but with any laparoscopic surgery they pump your belly up with CO2 like a balloon, to get a bigger field and easier access! And you do get verrrry bloated.
For my family, neither of my parents changed their last name, and we kids ended up just getting our mom's last name. I'm not sure if there was much reasoning, or if they didn't care and one just sounded better, but I'm quite happy with it that way. possibly because it means I have no association with my father namewise, but that's a different can of worms.
Elder millennial masc here. Why so heteronormative? Femme women are hyper sexualized in almost every aspect of their lives, so I intentionally make sure that that is not how I treat women around me. Give the power to the femmes. Let them decide who they want to approach and interact with that way. I've been dating "straight" girls and femmes since high school and not once have I had to make the first move in terms of interest. Have a rule with "straight" girls I don't make the first move at all (they have to make that choice). Has caused me no issues finding hook-ups or partners in 20+ years of dating femme women, and has left me with a clear conscience. Also, sex eyes, like Alayna mentions, are a real thing. And they work.
Not the girlfriend talk -> sorry single listeners -> better help sponsorship LMAOOOO I spit out my food. Hope your valentine's days were all great As one of 2 twins from a 6ft 8in dad/ 5ft 1in mom (yes, really), I understand the concerns Mak had about the size difference between her brother and her girlfriend. My mom had a very rough time when she gave birth to me and my brother, including some pretty severe complications for a couple days after
15:05 they are huge and I love them for that. I’m a small human with the heaviest of periods so I NEED them humongous pads lol but jokes aside, they are really good for the night and event then I have to layer 2 sometimes 😢 Edit: Alayna has a point! I’ve been iron deficient since I hit puberty because of my periods but I’m working on it now
26:14 I gotta say, big genes ≠ big babies I was the biggest baby over my two older brothers, and I ended up being 5' 2", while both of them are 6 foot lol My mom is closer to my height and my brothers are taller than my dad
lol I had the same realization of a last name when I don’t want kids. Like why am I trying to figure out how I’m gonna do my last name per se since I’m not gonna have kids. So really it’s just a preference for me and also the talk with my SO of how to do the last name. But that’s it.
The fem convo got to me because I didn't think I was all that fem and then one time I went into a gay bar and a guy yelled at me for being there because he assumed I was a straight woman.
I'm always really lost on USA conversations about lasts names. Here, where i am from, its most common now to each keep their name and the child gets both, no hyphenated, or each person adds their partners last name to their own. First option is seen in better lights, as you shouldn't exclude your existence once you where married, you are yourself after matriage just like you were before, and the child gets both because their are a product of the two of you....and also because it's complicated and expensive to make so many new documents and update every single thing with your current name. As for example, my name is Isadora Kelly F. A. da Silva. F is surname of my mother, A of my father and da Silva both of them had, so i ended up earning three. And that is the only acceptable thing for me around this subject, its really sad to lose your name after marriage and i hope we get over it
Ashley is classic... made me think LL Bean and Lands End...but the voice in my headed added to the firts catalog name and changed the 'lands' to 'man's'

Like why am I trying to figure out how I’m gonna do my last name per se since I’m not gonna have kids.
So really it’s just a preference for me and also the talk with my SO of how to do the last name. But that’s it.
How amazing does Alayna look here? She's always perfect but maybe it's the white top. Bringing English teacher vibes... ❤
The fem convo got to me because I didn't think I was all that fem and then one time I went into a gay bar and a guy yelled at me for being there because he assumed I was a straight woman.
Omg that’s horrible :((
Ashley doing the Trump voice while going "I am the hottest lesbian around" is peak commedy.

“oh i think this does come out on valentine’s day 😐 this episode is sponsored by betterhelp!”
And that is the only acceptable thing for me around this subject, its really sad to lose your name after marriage and i hope we get over it
Short girls can have pregnancies. I hate when people say you’re too small to bear a child..
This 51 yo baby gay, gay virgin appreciates the shout out Ashley!
