This is VERY helpful and also very interessting. You defiantly have alot of insight to the inner workings of the game. The way the PaRappa games are put together is pretty complicated. As a huge PaRappa fan and hobby game designer it is my dream to someday put together a working parappa game engine. Personally I very much prefer UJL and PaRappa 1's gameplay though. A video showing your knowledge of the inner workings of those games (similar to this video) would be very appriciated.
+BLBridged Wow, your comment means a lot, thank you for your compliments! Yeah I honestly prefer UJL's algorithm to get cool, it's not heavily based on hitting the offbeats, although that helps a lot too in getting cool. UJL's engine is more intricate, but, I'll think about making a video of it later down the road. Parappa 1 engine is simpler and similar to UJL's engine. Interestingly after I figured out PTR2's algorithm to get cool I tried to hit the backbeat in Parappa 1, surprinsingly that worked quite well in a lot of cases enabling me to get cool mode easier. You should get a better idea on how the algorithm for this game works, I've posted ways to achieve cool mode for Fleaswallow's and CCMO's levels, and I will agree with you that it's better balanced than in PTR2 since it doesn't rely heavily on hitting the backbeat but creating a rhythm that sounds "cool". Take into consideration though that PTR2 changed the genre a bit and the songs are closer to an R&B genre rather than the classic rap seen in Parappa 1 (said by Rodney Greenblat himself): Gamasutra: When it came to PaRappa 2, was the team disappointed by moving back or were they just happy to return to what worked? Greenblat: Well, that's what I thought was going to happen, but once again Matsuura wants to do everything in a freaked out, backwards upside down way. AndI love him for that, he's an artist who's constantly trying to beat people's expectations, to trick them out with that they think he's going to do. So it was another case of that with this R&B thing instead of rap. I was happy that it involved the same characters (from PaRappa 1), but the way it was all going to work, the storyline, the animation was all turned around. Probably another reason why they changed the algorithm to rely more on the backbeat.
+oddMLan UJL always seemed to have the most advanced gameplay of the three. Recreating the engine requires alot of insight and knowledge. Knowledge that is very hard to aquire. Like, does it matter how often you use each button in a line, as long as you use, each given button at least once? Does the game have a button limit on each line that, when exceeded, give you a bad rating? Button Mashing usually results in a bad rating. A game judging the quality of musical freestyling performance is a pretty surreal concept but PTR games especially UJL do a pretty damn good job at doing so. (with a few exceptions, we all sometimes played a line that sounded totally awesome, but the game still rated it as bad, but even that is relativly rare. You can usually see where you messed up, and caused the game to give you a bad rating) Just 2 more questions: On PTR 2, did you figure everything you know, out by just playing that game, or do you know some of the stuff by hacking into the game, or other methods? Do you know any rhythm game other then the parappa games, where freestyling is a thing, to some extend? Because it would be interesting to see how other games might do things differently (and possibly even better) but y'know most rhythm games are all about just pressing buttons at the right time, with no freestyling involved.
thank you from 7 years later since you made this post @@oddMLan I'm a new Parappa fan n' learning Parappa 2's mechanics has been tricky, but this video should be helpful!
thank you so much, i only got cool mode on Guru ant and that was by mistake but I've been trying everything instead of looking at the simple strategy behind the mechanics, I'm actually surprised so many people play the game but this video gave me a lot to stand on
+Tru Kuu Oh, glad that someone who actually knows how to play Parappa agrees with me, heh, I was thinking "what if I got something wrong", that'd be embarrasing, lol. But this is basically the knowledge I adquired of the game from studying the numbers closely with Cheat Engine plus my empiric experience from playing the game a lot! Oh, and also sorry I haven't been active on Facebook lately, I'll post this in the "Parappa The Rapper: The Hip Hop Hero" Discussion Group for other people to see.
This is a solid video through and through! Thanks for sharing this to the PTR group. Even if I am not a part of the group any more; the group needs content, and it is good for those that are a part of it to have access to this knowledge. It helps the group achieve its goal of unifying the everyone and helping with all aspects of the fandom. I really enjoyed the video and am really glad it exists for other players. I have recently picked the controller back up on the Parappa games and am going to begin documenting my progress again through videos.
+oddMLan You don't know how many times I tried to get cool mode in stage 2, I was so angry! I then watched your video for some tips, then I finally got cool mode. God bless you, for the great video. :D
Even with this I still can't get cool mode, at least without savestates, and even with savestates I struggle a lot. God, I miss how easy it was to get cool in the original PaRappa :''(
I am so glad you made a video for this as it helps people but I just cant do it. I cant get cool mode no matter how hard I try. I just can't keep a consistent flow. This is the final trophy I need too.
I've been trying this technique on both stage 1 and stage 3 (where everyone seems to get cool mode accidentally) and it still isn't working. I think I'm just completely out of rhythm.
This may help to a few people, it may not, but I some-what figured out methods for most stages, which will mostly require the R3 method, so I'll explain which each R3 tilt you would have. You would also need the Yellow hat for this. R3 Up - Red Hat(Easiest Difficulty) R3 Left - Orange/Blue Hat(Easy/Intermediate Difficulty) R3 Right - Pink Hat(Hard Difficulty) R3 Down - Yellow Hat(Hardest Difficulty) And I think just by pressing R3 without moving it either gives you a random hat, or the Hat you have on. Anyway, here's the difficulty's I suggest on the stage, and what you should possibly do: Stage 1: R3 Up - Mash the Button 4 times in the beginning, then do a little offbeat, like a one-two-two one one, two-two-three-four type of thing. Stage 2: [Possibly] R3 Alone, Somewhat of 'Follow the rhythm and also adding extra buttons do the song.' sort of thing. Stage 3: R3 Alone/Down: Be a little off with the buttons to get the tip of Cool, then make up your rhythm while still going a little bit off. Stage 4: R3 Down: Follow with the rhythm with some button beat mashing, For example: [Moosheshia] To the-To the right. [Parappa] To-To-To the Righ-Righ-Rig-Right! Stage 5-7: I haven't tried yet, but I'll reply once I understand it. Stage 8: R3 All but Up: Basically just do some more button mashing, then make your own groove. Hopefully this is helpful to you, it'll certainly be helpful for me as a reminder. Let me know if it helps, or it just doesn't, as the game may be strict on you and be like "Nah, that's not how you do it." Like me in cool mode of Stage 2. EDIT: Just going to put my tips of my own replies, just to make my own words shorter. HOW TO DO ALL THIS: The PSC has two sticks on the bottom, called Left Stick (L3) and Right Stick (R3) and both sticks work like how a normal stick in any other controller can be, whether it be an xbox, a gamecube, or a N64 Controller, they work like each separate controller, with the ability to move 360 degrees. Although, a more special feature of the Playstation Controller is that pushing down on the controller acts as a button of it's own self, in some special games...Which a few other controllers also have this aspect, but in this game, it's very critical. Now with that explanation out of the way, Here's a simple way on how you activate the R3 trick. On the Right Stick, push and hold down the stick and aim in the direction you want to specify (Up, Down, Left, Right) As I had listed above, each movement of the stick corresponds to a hat (Example: Up = Red Hat, the first set of 8 stages. If confused, read update that I will post shortly below.) Now the tricky part about this is basically selecting the stage. Considering your thumb is already locked onto the right stick, and also aimed in a direction you want to select your difficulty in, I find it best to use either your other hand or your middle or ring finger. Now why I mention both your other hand or middle/ring finger is because you could also do yet another trick, the L1 and L2 trick, which essentially when you hold both L1 and L2 you can skip the cut scenes and the annoying Boombox. Stage 5: R3 Down - I found out that the R3 Down thing may also be wrong, so it's more or less the mode with the fast lyrics. Anyway, it'll mostly be in the beginning verse, and it's really just button Mashing. Stage 6: R3 Any but Up - This one may be a little tough, as it's a mixture; so it's best to try out the stages before tackling this one. Stage 7: R3 Down[A.K.A, the one with the shortest lyrics.] The trick here is mostly in the part where you list off countries, mostly at the L and R section, but who knows, maybe it's somewhere else. While I was testing out some tries for Cool Mode, I found out that you can actually do the Stage 3 trick in all of the stages, which thanks to that tip, the only level I have left to get cool mode is stage 2! So once I beat that, I'll try my best to explain how to keep each cool mode by re-watching the special replays I gave myself. Incase you're lost, the trick for every stage is to slightly be off with a few/all buttons until you reach the tip of cool. Once you do reach that tip, either make up your own rhythm, or button mash whatever the last buttons were in the line. If you're still lost, just...Watch the video. I didn't really check it out until after typing it. Ok, so for a long forgotten stage...Chop Chop Master Onions, to be exact. Thanks to his very strangely short rhythms he is pretty challenging to get really good 'Cool' rhythms on. So I did take a break from the game just trying to try the other games, specifically Um Jammer Lammy. And it's way of getting cool mode actually made me interested and try it out. Surprisingly enough, it worked! Now while UJL expects you to make up a lot of separate and funky grooves and strokes, the best method I found for the entire game was to basically Spam all of the buttons in a "one-two-three" kind of rhythm. Most of the time, it worked! Another thing, specifically for people who read the comment above. I mentioned "sets of 8 levels" in this game, and some people may not get what that means. Well, what I mean by "sets of 8 levels" is the sets of 8 levels in the game, from Beard Burgers to Party Time. Now why I also mention the word "sets" is because, if you haven't beaten/seen PTR2 to it's fullest, there is actually 3 other sets of the same level, just now with a new hat and added difficulty (Which IS why I mention random colors way back up at the R3 method!)
ES RE ESTRESANTE CUANDO ESTAS APUNTO DE SACAR EL COOL Y EN LA SIGUIENTE LINEA TE BAJAN LA BARRITA. O PEOR, CUANDO ESTAS EN EL COOL Y A LO ÚLTIMO FALLAS AAAAA
i spent hours trying to get cool mode in stage 7. if anyone still can't get cool mode try slowing the game down!! shift and tab in pcsx2. way easier to hit the backbeats when it's slower
This is the only one I haven't completed cool mode on. Yellow hat ;-; it looks so easy but when I'm almost at cool I fail the next line and go back to good :')
ODDmLan, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO F###### GET COOL FOR A MONTH NOW, AND I ALMOST BROKE MY CONTROLLER! ok let's tone this down, but srsly, I have been trying for so long now, and many other sites either show me misleading info or they are full with s###. So thank you for making this :) And i also feel like frickin' ELON MUSK DEVELOPED THE COOL CONCEPT HOLY SH-
Thanks for the video this helped a lot and now I can get cool mode on the other stages the only other one I did was stage 3 on complete next can you do a tutorial on staying on cool mode?
This really helped me understand how to do it, but I still can't seem to do it!! If I focus too much on trying this strategy I miss the dots completely, although sometimes I just happen to get halfway to cool and then I fuck up the next line. Damn :(
I have no idea what you're talking about I've got as much rhythm as that chair What happened to me was a tragedy But I don't have to be a rap god Look, I got a sweet deal going on here I got all the records that I can play All these sweet old labels And this hat from the 00’s What more could a rapper need? Besides, I ain't got rhythm No, I ain't got rhythm I said I ain't got rhythm I ain't got rhythm
I have a method that gets me cool on the first two lines of thesong. Sometimes it works for me and i use it all the time. I reccomend using it but you dont have to. So even if you get cool 2:30 Repeat the first 2 words over and over and boom instant cool, although im not sure if its for yellow hat. I have yellow hat and it works, so try it with orange hat and tell me results. I think its yellow hat exclusive. Even with it not being on with the dots, its still good and it always gets me cool mode. I only know how to do yellows hat method because its easy. I dont think orange hat works because it usually says "Cut!" Just once but yellow hat is easier because it says "Cut! Cut!" And you still hit that second triangle, so give orange hat a test and see if my method works, if not. Yellow hat is the way to go for cool mode with my method. Again: I use this method and reccomend it.
As I'm understanding your method is like this: XX . XX . XX . XX (X being when you press the button and . being the breaks in between) -- I tried this and it's great for racking up a LOT of points, but it didn't get me cool mode unfortunately. So I combined it with the video's strategy of . X . X . X . X etc (hitting on the backbeats) by rapping something like this: XX . XX . XX . . X . X . X -- it gave me cool mode instantly! Recommend trying that if anyone's struggling on this song
So it seems that the more of the teacher's notes you hit, the higher your adherence (blue meter) score, and the more back beats you hit, the higher your flow (purple meter) score. But does anyone know what increases the originality (orange meter) score?
Can you do a video like this but for PTR 1? I tried a lot of ways that could possibly work but I always keep getting the "almost cools" and then end up going back to good
Well, there IS a way to get the "Black Hat" difficulty. Something about holding the Right Stic button down and pulling it back at the same time? It doesn't give you the hat, though...
Zashxq it is more than just that, true, this guide is old, I should get around and make a new, more accurate one posesix figured out pretty accurately how the actual grading system works and grants points
Have watched multiple videos of people doing this but when i do it it just goes negative the entire time so either its been patched or just plain BS 🤣🤣
So basically avoid the stars notes? been trying to get to cool mode. There are times i did enter it, but then lost it.😒 Honestly PaRappa the Rapper is my very favorite childhood game, but at the same time ( no offense to anyone) the cool mode mechanics in this game is poorly design.
So today I was playing stage 3 and I (kinda accidentally but not really) got cool mode near the end and ended the song with it, but then I went to save and accidentaly loaded the old file instead FML, at least I have the replay but still
Thank you so much. I just got the game but I dunno the controls for PlayStation and I binded it to my keyboard with an emulator. I failed the first stage. I need to get cool mode.
Pressing the buttons slightly late grants you more score than hitting the buttons right on time.
Syncopation is hard, man.
Thats how you groove baby. Hit the 2s and 4s hit the back beats, get some dotted eights in there
Kinda figured that out while playing this
Omg BAHN IM A BIG FAN! WHENS YOUR NEXT PARAPPA 2 STREAM?
Well yea because this game for some reason, hates buttons that you hit early
I like how the game never really explains this, i spent days trying to get cool on these levels back in the day

Now why I also mention the word "sets" is because, if you haven't beaten/seen PTR2 to it's fullest, there is actually 3 other sets of the same level, just now with a new hat and added difficulty (Which IS why I mention random colors way back up at the R3 method!)
actually your wrong about stage 8 i did it with red hat and i got it done easily
Well, as I said, you can get cool mode in your own way, similar to how I get my own strict Chop Chop Master Onion when it comes to cool mode.
hey when your doing hair scare just multiply the first and last word

Ya strategy isn' working for me so for me YOUR'E LYING!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!!
I finished the entire game never knowing that I can do anything other than repeating exactly what the teacher is doing without repeating any notes
Awesome video! Thank you for uploading bud. I've been struggling with this level for a while!
ES RE ESTRESANTE CUANDO ESTAS APUNTO DE SACAR EL COOL Y EN LA SIGUIENTE LINEA TE BAJAN LA BARRITA. O PEOR, CUANDO ESTAS EN EL COOL Y A LO ÚLTIMO FALLAS AAAAA
Oh you’ve answered so many of my questions about this game thank you THANK UOU!!!
1/3 as strong beats are for classical/church straight rhythm. 2/4 is very indicative of jazz rock, pop, and syncopated feel.
This really helped me, now i got cool on every level!
Stage 3 cool mode pisses me off because you have to freestyle at a certain tempo, and i screwed up because the game thinks I'm freestyling too slowly.
i spent hours trying to get cool mode in stage 7. if anyone still can't get cool mode try slowing the game down!! shift and tab in pcsx2. way easier to hit the backbeats when it's slower
Thanks! Guess what? I took your advice and cleared all 8 stages of PaRappa the Rapper 2 on Cool Mode, thanks to you!✌️😃
This is the only one I haven't completed cool mode on. Yellow hat ;-; it looks so easy but when I'm almost at cool I fail the next line and go back to good :')
Even trying to do what this video says, it's still damn hard to try to even get halfway to cool...
fr
ODDmLan, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO F###### GET COOL FOR A MONTH NOW, AND I ALMOST BROKE MY CONTROLLER! ok let's tone this down, but srsly, I have been trying for so long now, and many other sites either show me misleading info or they are full with s###. So thank you for making this :) And i also feel like frickin' ELON MUSK DEVELOPED THE COOL CONCEPT HOLY SH-
A S C E N D
This take me 10 tries to go, but i finally did it! Thanks
Damn :(
I have no idea what you're talking about
I've got as much rhythm as that chair
What happened to me was a tragedy
But I don't have to be a rap god
Look, I got a sweet deal going on here
I got all the records that I can play
All these sweet old labels
And this hat from the 00’s
What more could a rapper need?
Besides, I ain't got rhythm
No, I ain't got rhythm
I said I ain't got rhythm
I ain't got rhythm
3:12 *MMMMMMMMMMMM sigh*
The best part was the slowed down footage. Drunk and Funky!
I accidentally got a Cool at the very end of Guru Ant's song so it counted as a Cool completion lmao
This was so genius...
Even though I didn't understand anything he said.
When trying to use buttons like in max difficulty, i still achieved cool mode in toasty buns
This feels really helpful but no matter how much I try it just won’t work and it’s really discouraging :/
I just got cool mode today on Stage 3 (aka BIG aka my favorite stage)
Unfortunately I failed it DX hopefully I can do it again sometime
This helped!
same
GreenWithEnvy
I did make it with cool mode on stage 3 with the golden hat.
¡Oh gracias!
Ahora me es mas facil tener cool mode en PaRappa the Rapper 2 ^-^
Thanks!
I just finished stage 1 and 2 in cool mode
You are the lord. You have the fame.
helpful. thanks for putting the time in to explain this.
thanks again
3:11 speed up max so it is normal
Weiner
make a video to explain how to keep cool mode pls
If the blue meter is adherence to the teacher and the orange is originality, what is the pink meter?
flow
i subscribed! :)
This does kind of explain, because I got 223+, and almost got to Cool, but then I get +227 and I went back to Good. 2:12
i guess it was luck i got cool mode in stage 3
Step 1: freestyle that bi-
so basically you turn the songs into ska jams
So it seems that the more of the teacher's notes you hit, the higher your adherence (blue meter) score, and the more back beats you hit, the higher your flow (purple meter) score.
But does anyone know what increases the originality (orange meter) score?
Make a longer verse than the teacher that sounds good
question: how to get that adherence
Essentially, hit the notes the teacher says. Dunno why it strays away from it...
holmrekR just hit the teachers notes
I can't seem to get cool mode! i try my hardest to do a backbeat and i'm really bad at it! ;_____________;
i think you can tell that you are doing it right if the charting changes overtime.
I got Cool Mode on Stage 8’s max difficulty somehow, and I managed to beat it. dafuq
Can you do a video like this but for PTR 1? I tried a lot of ways that could possibly work but I always keep getting the "almost cools" and then end up going back to good
I'd Imagine How Hard It Is To Get Cool With Black Hat
Well, there IS a way to get the "Black Hat" difficulty. Something about holding the Right Stic button down and pulling it back at the same time? It doesn't give you the hat, though...
DJ Oshawott Yes I Saw A Vid About It
Thanks! It works!
Does this work with the other coloured hats? (Mainly the yellow hat because just completing the level is hard)
i think it's more than just a check to see how many offbeats you hit, tbh
Zashxq it is more than just that, true, this guide is old, I should get around and make a new, more accurate one
posesix figured out pretty accurately how the actual grading system works and grants points
Have watched multiple videos of people doing this but when i do it it just goes negative the entire time so either its been patched or just plain BS 🤣🤣
didn't work :/ i did what you said but in stage 3 and all i got is :
Bad mode.
This is Work Thx Man
So basically avoid the stars notes? been trying to get to cool mode. There are times i did enter it, but then lost it.😒 Honestly PaRappa the Rapper is my very favorite childhood game, but at the same time ( no offense to anyone) the cool mode mechanics in this game is poorly design.
How To Make A YTP
its sorta hard to get used to
So today I was playing stage 3 and I (kinda accidentally but not really) got cool mode near the end and ended the song with it, but then I went to save and accidentaly loaded the old file instead
FML, at least I have the replay but still
Thank you so much!
I managed to get cool mode on the demo disk, does that count?
I don't understand I did the same but it still doesn't do the same
Actually to get cool mode you just have to double the amount the teacher tells you.
Edit:This only works for PaRappa the Rapper 1.
What the video does not explain is how to get the blue bar but I can tell you get it by hitting some main beats as well
You actually want to fail the blue bar
learned so much here
GOD SOUND
I still can't get it even with this (levels 6 and after)
Thanks for guide now i have 7103 score in 1 stage tysm
Oh, you still play PaRappa! Same here! I also watched this yesterday I just didn’t comment.
now parappa the rapper is on ps4
Tried this method many times and it doesn't work
i thought the yellow crosses were stars
I was playing guru ant and rewatched the replay and didn't even relize I almost got cool ;-;
Rip me
You never taught me how to stay on cool :(
This why Parappa 2 better than Parappa 1
Thank you so much. I just got the game but I dunno the controls for PlayStation and I binded it to my keyboard with an emulator.
I failed the first stage. I need to get cool mode.
*in your face old as whole*
wut XD
Thank you!
No matter what I do, I still won't be able to get Cool.
Cool job
awesome video but dang this is way too complicated for a simple freestyle mode
