- An "upgrade" of the rides between Crater/Boiler Island and Jungle Island in Riven: The Sequel to Myst using several machine-learning methods to de-artifact, interpolate, and upscale. The full-screen videos start at 2:50.
The game came out in 1997, I look forward to being outdone by the upcoming remake!

Also left this in another video.
After all these years, I JUST noticed an inconsistency. Look at the track that's between the water tube, and the cave entrance of Book Assembly Island. On the way to said island, the track has two support columns, and on the way to Jungle Island, there's only one column!
Correct! Just noticed this too, after so many years of enjoying these rides. This exists also in the original game. Strange, given the fact that the developers had created an entire world in 3d (islands, rides, etc) and then rendered it in specific points, so it would be logical for this mistake to not have happened.
Great catch.
@@SoulstormGRperhaps I could speculate that maybe it was an early design or early render because I notice a cut which makes the ai movement jarry. And also they used morphing software perhaps it was hardware or software limitation at the time like 5cds or 1dvd
The frame rate is a vast improvement on its own.
In my opinion, the low resolution hides some of the technological limitations of the time. The AI makes the flaws a bit too visible.
Riven often looks picture perfect, but then it’s a picture taken with a 2 megapixel cameraphone. But this way it actually feels and looks more realistic, just low resolution realistic… am I making sense?
Absolutely right, for instance you can see when textures have been tiled a lot more clearly than in the original. It's a bit like playing a game that was designed for CRT on a modern emulator - it looks more primitive now than it actually looked on that hardware.
@@DatedDiskDispatch I recently bought the game on steam and while the resolution is absolutely horrifying, the lighting is amazing.. every panorama actually looks real.
@@DatedDiskDispatchtotally agreed, at least some people get it.
@@TheDerpingDutchman ScummVM supports it, you can add a scanline filter and make it look like it did in the 90s in those glorious CRT monitors. The scanlines make the game look so much sharper and they hide the low res aspect of the images.
This is fantastic. I love riven. I just replayed it a couple of days ago. Just as good as I remember. Resolution not so much.
Check out the remake ^^
@@DeltaNovum i have its great
@@TheCrackFox awesome! How did you like it? I should be sleeping, but I'm downloading it right now and I have my VR headset charging. Now here's hoping that my system can somewhat run it in VR. Otherwise I'll be glad to play it on my very old CRT or old Plasma tv, which still look fantastic. Can't wait to try it out!
@@DeltaNovum the graphics are good. They changed the puzzles a little. Added some new ones. I'm on the fence about the cgi characters though
Is there any way we can get these enhanced videos into the game?
There have been a couple efforts to make a playable upscaled version but I'd say best thing to do at this point is wait for the remake - coming this year! It'll be far better than this.
@@DatedDiskDispatch from what I’ve seen of the remake it actually doesn’t look as convincing despite the much higher fidelity graphics. Looking forward to it though
@@DatedDiskDispatch The remake is going to be a very different thing though - they've made changes to the game and added new stuff, plus characters are now full 3D models. I'd rather have an upscaled remaster as a separate thing.
@@ImVeryOriginal yep the models killed the remake. would rather just hear a voice than see crappy figures in an otherwise beautiful rendition of riven.
