I would attend a 2hr lecture 2x a week on the stuff you talk about, gladly. Thanks for all the work you put in. It puts my childhood, and the theory classes I'm taking right now in context, and it's very satisfying. Keep up the good work!
Are you planning on doing a video on Animal Crossing? I'd love to know how they make the music at 1 AM feel like night time vs how they make the music at 7 AM feel like morning. And how they change up the theme just slightly to add in a feel of having rain or snow fall, or in New Leaf how they make it sound like you're asleep with the music in Dream Towns. And that wouldn't even be touching on any other music from the series. With Animal Crossing there's a lot of music to choose from and I'd love to hear you explain it.
Having no musical background whatsoever, I rarely have any idea what you're talking about but the way you explain everything is so enthralling. Thanks for doing what you do since I first found your channel through your Castlevania video.
I believe he has a couple videos explaining the 'basics', which might help you there. I forget their titles, but if you scroll through the uploads, you'll see the blue thumbnails. Or maybe he has a playlist of them.
I love this game. Chromaticism is the “key” to unlock thinking outside the “key” and this game does so much right in this field. I need to transcribe this soundtrack
what's the difference between "heavy" chromatism (non approach notes) and borrowing something from another scale ? For example in the final "good night mario" song in this vidéo , you could say that the composer is borrowing the final chord from A major or modulating/resolving to A major ?
TheOrangepeak Borrowed notes have to be related to a mode in the original key somehow. In the case of Nighty night, Mario, raising the C to a C# changes the tonic, which then changes the key. It could be argued that it’s a modulation to A Major, but it’s too short of a passage to tell
cool thanks :)! by thinking of a parallel C scale that fit this chord, I came across a cool scale that doesn't seems to have a name, it's basically a ionian #5 with a ♭2 ; I know it sounds weird but I find it awesome ^^ try it, it sounds really nice :D ..and if someone know his name I would be glad :p
mrmarvel07, part of it is definitely chromatic: at the very start, there's a run that goes up and down between the sharp 5, natural 5, and flat 5, in a jagged rhythm. I think the organ part following the chromatic runs has some chromaticism in it too, but it's more subtle (and also really fast), and I haven't sat down to transcribe it.
Only the second half of the video is about harmonic chromaticism. The first half is about melodic chromaticism, and the melodic line in Doopliss's Theme definitely emphasizes the chromatic notes, leading it to feel a bit quirky and circusy.
_Soooooooooo...._ _Uhhhhhhhh...._ Ya gonna do a vid on *super* paper mario?... I don't really know anything 'bout music even tho I listen to like 20.000+ songs and video game tracks all the time lol, But super paper mario was the most memorable ost I've ever heard! Ever since I've played it I've never forgotten those tracks, The way the music sounds when you enter a new world and it draws itself out "fosters home for imaginary friends" style! The weird and crazy themes in each dimension you explore! Theres gotta be SOMETHING you can talk about it!
Yeah, the music in Super Paper Mario is insane. The chord progressions, bass lines and time signatures are all over the place. I've wanted him to do this for a while.
7:54 Love it... Reminds me of when you're on the cusp of sleep, and you're reminiscing on your day, when suddenly your brain drifts into a dreamy state and suddenly you're floating on a cloud high up above the world
Oh man please make this happen! Maybe some Tallon IV analysis or maybe even... planet Phaaze! Well really anything from Metroid would be really cool to see analyzed! :D
You have made my night! You combined two of my favorite things! Paper Mario TTYD & music theory! This was so awesome to hear! :) I've always wondered about the chromaticism in Rogueport, in terms of function. Another amazing job!
Weird. This is the EXACT topic I was hoping for. I just played thru Paper Mario 2 again the other week (for like the 5th time in my life), and I was thinking, I would dig an 8-Bit Music Theory video on the goofy feel to the tracks in this game. It's like I used telepathy to make this video happen.
Paper Mario TTYD was not only my first mario game, but the first video game I beat myself, so it means so much to me. This video was informative and a lovely dose of nostalgia, as well as teaching me why I still occasionally remember the music over 10-15 years later. Thank you so much
I’ve always loved the music in the game! One of my favorite songs was actually only briefly in the game. It only occurred during dusk on the train to Poshley Heights. It was so soothing to listen to.
Thank you for these videos! I’m a music major in college and these tie in so well with my theory classes. They help me learn while also maintaining the relevancy of using real examples I’ve been listening to my whole life. You are a blessing, hope you never stop
Super Paper Mario is good in it’s own right, but the first two games are true masterpieces, especially The Thousand Year Door. It’s just a joy to play through.
Just want to say I LOVE your channel. There's nothing else like it! Video game music so brilliant and daringly original, and you really drive that meta-point home!
I'm sad I never played TTYD since I don't have a GameCube, I did play the original Paper Mario and the same concepts do apply in the OST of that game. That's why it's so good! By the way, have you thought about making a video about Paper Mario: The Origami King? One thing I noticed from the soundtrack to the newest Paper Mario game is the number of ways the main theme is rearranged. There's also a few leitmotifs from this main theme that have been widely used: D#-C#-B-F#-B (32151) and B-F#-C#-B-F#-C#-B (1521521). King Olly also has a leitmotif/theme that is very chromatic. I hear them very often. It would be really cool to see you expand on that. I love your videos, keep it up!
6:48 so we're just not going to talk about those sexy, sexy tuplets? As punishment I shall expect a full report on higher tuplet usage in videogames on my desk this time two weeks from now.
This is great! Ive been working on writing some fan music for Paper Mario, but now I have to add a ton more! Thanks for telling me about all this! Im trying to make it sound as true to the series as I can.
I have a music theory class this semester, and honestly watching these videos with music I’m familiar with helps me understand a lot. These videos are so wonderful!
I am so amazed by your videos the pure quality of editing and also the depth of your understanding towards music are just top class. Its easy to understand and just makes fun to watch thank you so much for your greate work all the time.
I randomly stumbled upon this video. I would have never thought someone would make a video analyzing music in one of my favorite childhood video games. As I'm also taking Music Theory classes, this video really enhanced my understanding of musical progressions and possible effects. Thanks a lot, and take care!
This is my favorite UA-cam channel covering my favorite game of all time. Today is a good day, and I will likely watch this video for the rest of my life, even while I write music. Amazing.
It's interesting how rough and abrasive minor and even some major seconds can sound yet when put in context like using them chromatically they create such unique melodies. Great video!
I keep hearing youtubers using pmtyd music in their backgrounds and it's always so trippy to be like wait I recognize that... I think... and like it has that such unique sound that it's hard to recognize It as anything else
Your videos have been such a fantastic source of learning and inspiration for me to pursue music further than I have up until now. Thanks for all the great content you produce and keep up the excellent work!
I know next to nothing about music theory but the way your videos are presented somehow really manage to hold my attention. Great job, can‘t wait for the next one. Also TTYD is just an amazing game overall!
you should really consider doing a basics of music theory series for beginners utilizing video game music as examples. i'd really like to know what you're talking about because im really interested :)
I was wondering for months why one of the songs I was practicing sounded so good with almost all the notes out of scale. Thanks, I can now sleep soundly.
Just wanted to drop by and say that you're my absolute favorite channel on UA-cam and you've taught me a lot about music and your content has helped me a lot when I'm writing my own music. Keep doing what you're doing!
This channel is the bomb! I especially love how every idea is clearly illustrated with examples instead of being left as some abstract idea. Plus, video games music rocks!
I started taking a music theory class this year, and your videos not only are super interesting, but really have been helping me connect what i study to music in the games i play. Its super cool and i thank you for that! :) (also you might find some beautiful examples of music in the shadow of the colossus soundtrack)((((maybe video worthy who knows hhaahahahah))))
1. Could you look at the original 2 earthworm jim games? Theres some really good funky atmospheric music in there! 2. Secret of Mana! 3. Love your series, big fan keep em comin!
It didn't occur immediately to me, but the concept of using chromatic neighbor tones goes way back! One of the most famous examples I can think of is by R Strauss in the Till Eulenspiegel horn call
I'm about to start making a soundtrack for a game I'd like to create one day, but I have so little formal musical training. I'm almost all self taught. This video both overwhelms and inspires me because watching it really makes me realize just how little I understand of music theory, but I'm going to watch the rest of your videos so I can hope to understand how game composers make their magic!
Can you talk about the music of Golden Sun? Specifically, how it manages to sound so grand and epic coming out of a GBA. There are a lot of Golden Sun videos coming out recently (I think Smash lit a fire under everyone's butts about Isaac's chances of getting in), so it's not a bad time for it.
Decided on a whim today to listen to some TTYD music while doing chores (if you gotta adult, might as well make it enjoyable). This video was posted while I was listening. 🤩 Thank you for this! 💛
Though i have no idea what most of these mean, im interested still in the way you talk about it, just so magical and full of wonder! You earned a sub from me man
Your videos are fantastic! I'd love to see you do something on Metroid music, lots of interesting melodies and crazy atmospheric pieces, as well as some very unsettling use of harmony. Metroid always had a way of making me feel isolated and lost. That game without it's sound track wouldn't be nearly as effective!
Hey dude. Do you think it would be possible to do a video on how to create strong melodies, using a specific game as an example. It would really help for my composition as my melodies often range from really good to meh to not so great. I love your videos so it would be really cool if you could do that. Thanks.
I really appreciate A. the effort put into the content here, with all the annotations of the sheet music, and B. the content itself. This is a detailed and expert analysis!
Love this video! Thousand-Year Door has a fantastic soundtrack, but you don't really hear a lot of people talk about it. Its not often brought up in the conversation about great video game music, so thank you for bringing some attention to this musical gem!
this is one of my favorite games of all time with some of my favorite music in games period. Thanks so much for helping me understand and appreciate it more.
4:34 I LOVE THE END OF CHAPTER FANFARE!!! I feel it isn’t JUST “circus-y,” but has a strange elegance and grandeur to it. Oh wait, that could actually perfectly describe an old-timey circus.
This was a really good explainer of music theory. I've always had trouble understanding wtf chord progression is but seeing the context for how they affect a mood in a clear way really helps.
I've always really appreciated this soundtrack, though I've never put much thought into what gives it its character - really interesting approach to explaining these ideas!
Okay, great video, as always, and great game, but I kinda missed the acknowlegdement, at least as how I personally feel about this soundtrack, of one certain aspect, which is the epicness, brought in some modal aspects in the harmonic layer. For example, in Poshley Heights, of course there's that chromatic descent in the melody at that moment, but the harmonic layer also throws at you that mixolydian feeling interchange with that Eb chord, which makes it, to me, feel kinda exciting, epic, even emotional (my language is portuguese, so it's reeally hard to translate this particular feeling...). Even that "circus music" wouldn't be found in that typical, kitsch circus, with that modal interchange feeling chord progression; typical circus music is way more tonal, harmonically, at least in my perception; and that end of chapter theme - I'm just gonna say it - it gets to my feelings, and I don't think it's just nostalgia. Rogueport, also, feels to me more like an exotic sounding scale than a chromatic melody, which matches a lot with that place in the game. But anyways, I think that's what makes ttyd sound as it sounds; the quirky chromatic melodies mixed with that epic, exciting modal interchange harmony. To me, Paper Mario sounds beautiful before it sounds goofy, but maybe it's just the kid in my past talking. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The Mario Mail song reminds me of some of the music in Animal Crossing. It would be neat to see a video about the music from that game and maybe how it is used to add ambiance and tone to such a unique game!
You should do the world themes in Pacman World 2 and talk about their Timbral variations from level to level (Its d o p e). That game's music is so underrated. Other cool game music to consider: Kirby's Air Ride (Its just lit) Shadow of the Colossus (There are some cool transitions in the boss fights when you engage the Colossi) I don't think you've done Super Mario Galaxy (or odyssey) but those seem like they have a bit to unpack I wish you talked about Boggly Woods' area theme too, those 4ths got me screaming
Chromaticism. The same thing that makes death metal bands sound brutally heavy is what makes Mario music sound adorably derpy.
Don't mind me, just here to inform you that what you just said is one of the greatest comments I've ever seen.
Matt does things Thank you, I am well versed in both death metal and Mario music. And derpyness.
*derpitude
Paper Derpy
Yeah well the death metal bands use it more in a minor and diminished context but basically its true
I would attend a 2hr lecture 2x a week on the stuff you talk about, gladly. Thanks for all the work you put in. It puts my childhood, and the theory classes I'm taking right now in context, and it's very satisfying. Keep up the good work!
Travis Strong ask your theory professor to go over the music you like!! They would love that opportunity. Have the class vote for weekly analysis!
Saaaame!
Hear you there. I've learned more about music from this channel than I did my entire middle- and high-school years.
Yes. He is right on point. Internet is amazing.
Same here!
Thousand Year Door remake confirmed!! Would love to see a follow up to this video
Some sort of comparison analysis video once the game releases would be awesome!!!
I am a simple person.
I see Paper Mario, I click.
Thank you for a TTYD video, one of my favorite video games and OSTs too!
If you want to see a gameplay wise quite terrible but comedy wise pretty good playthrough,
watch the GameGrumps'.
Aren't you the person who's always commenting on siivagunner videos
I would watch a youtuber who just analyzes music theory from Paper Mario games
Emm Bee Sea maki nishikino pfp. i see you are also a man culture.
It’s the best paper Mario imo

This would make an awesome topic. Definitely second this!
I third this. I've been wanting a video on that for a while.
Fourth...ed? I fourthed this!
fifthed!!
Sixthed? I'm not sure we can use actual words anymore for this.
Having no musical background whatsoever, I rarely have any idea what you're talking about but the way you explain everything is so enthralling. Thanks for doing what you do since I first found your channel through your Castlevania video.

TheOrangepeak well the Phrygian Dominant mode has a flat 2 and flat 6 if that’s what you mean?
Can you team up sith Stryder7x to see if chromaticism can crash the game? Apparently everything else does!
They can't team up, Teaming up crashes Paper Mario!
Wait, does Paper Mario crash a lot or something?
The Avenging Artist look up Stryder7x on youtube, his whole channel is documenting crashes and glitches for paper mario
Funny games Entertain
Except it’s so true you can’t claim sarcasm.
I knew Stryder7x was a sith
I’m so surprised you didn’t talk about Dooplis’s battle music. It is by far the most obviously chromatic piece in the game and it’s so effective
Madeloon R it’s not chromatic tho... unless I’m stupid
mrmarvel07, part of it is definitely chromatic: at the very start, there's a run that goes up and down between the sharp 5, natural 5, and flat 5, in a jagged rhythm. I think the organ part following the chromatic runs has some chromaticism in it too, but it's more subtle (and also really fast), and I haven't sat down to transcribe it.
There are a ton of chromatic notes/scales in that theme, yes, but not harmonic chromaticism in the same way he’s describing in the video.
Only the second half of the video is about harmonic chromaticism. The first half is about melodic chromaticism, and the melodic line in Doopliss's Theme definitely emphasizes the chromatic notes, leading it to feel a bit quirky and circusy.
It might be to avoid spoilers. Giving away the name would sorta ruin the point of a section of the game
6:49 those 5-tuplets and 7-tuplets sound very cool with their "just *slightly* out of time" effect :O
Could you talk about repetitive music that doesn't get boring from the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series?
If you mean things like the entire soundtrack of Time/Darkness/Sky being based around just a few motifs, then I wholeheartedly agree.
Love this idea!
YES! I would love to see a video done on the music in the PMD series.
Ooooh I need to see this too
Yes! Made by a genius! Been playing the games for over a decade! Absolutely flawless!
_Soooooooooo...._

Yeah, the music in Super Paper Mario is insane. The chord progressions, bass lines and time signatures are all over the place. I've wanted him to do this for a while.

The wait is worth it.
You have made my night! You combined two of my favorite things! Paper Mario TTYD & music theory! This was so awesome to hear! :) I've always wondered about the chromaticism in Rogueport, in terms of function. Another amazing job!

Never played this game but man the music has such consistency with Super Paper Mario. Would love to see a video on that game!
If you enjoy RPG, I strongly suggest you to play the first two Paper Mario! They are fantastic!
Super Paper Mario is good in it’s own right, but the first two games are true masterpieces, especially The Thousand Year Door. It’s just a joy to play through.
Rogueport has the best theme I’ve ever heard.
I am so attached to it that I even left my gamecube on just to hear it for a while as a kid.
Just want to say I LOVE your channel. There's nothing else like it! Video game music so brilliant and daringly original, and you really drive that meta-point home!
THANK YOU!! I love this game’s music, and I noticed this, but didn’t really know what it was called, or how to describe it

I’ve been waiting so long for a new video! They are so much fun to watch
Man, I just have to say that I absolutely love love LOVE this channel! Greeaat work!
TYD is a sleeper BANGER. I feel like almost none of my friends played it - but it will always be one of my favorites. Great vid! Love the channel.

+Daniel Strangers - Possibly the 'What Makes A Good Melody - Earthbound's Snowman Theme'. Don't know if that helps you out, but here you go.
"Analysing Christmassy Melodies for Christmas" and "How Melody Expresses Harmony in Cave Story" might help you as well.

love our videos! keep up the good work. these videos have defiantly have helped me get a better understanding of how music works
I'm so impressed with the amount of work that you put into this video..I learned a a lot and had fun doing it, thank you!!
Man I could watch you talk about this entire game’s OST lol. Great video!!
I wanna see OG Metroid Prime first. But I wanna see both!
thanks for continuing to be my favourite channel on youtube
This was a really good explainer of music theory. I've always had trouble understanding wtf chord progression is but seeing the context for how they affect a mood in a clear way really helps.
Music theory and Video Games, I love your videos!!
6:43 this is beautiful, and I find the rhythm confusing to look at but when I heard it, it's so beautiful!
TTYD is one of my favorite games of all time and only you could do it justice, I'm so excited for this video!
Beautiful Game, Beautiful Music, Beautifully constructed video. I look forward to watching your content.
5:38 that seems almost more like the composer really wanted to use to use the dorian #4 sound, I've always love that mode !
I always am excited to see a video from you. Keep it up man
I've always really appreciated this soundtrack, though I've never put much thought into what gives it its character - really interesting approach to explaining these ideas!
I SPY THAT MAGITEK ARMOUR BOOOOOOOOOOOY
Game Score Fanfare Oh hey, do a collab with this guy.
I fucking love your channel. I wanna compose game music so bad.
When I started watching Slice of Life Anime I quickly began feeling like a lot of the Music in those shows reminded me of Paper Mario music.
Love the Hindemith at the beginning!
I really love the music style in TTYD and Super Paper Mario
The Mario Mail song reminds me of some of the music in Animal Crossing. It would be neat to see a video about the music from that game and maybe how it is used to add ambiance and tone to such a unique game!
I feel like you could make an entire mini-series on the music of Paper Mario Ttyd alone, there's just so much magic in the music
You should do the world themes in Pacman World 2 and talk about their Timbral variations from level to level (Its d o p e). That game's music is so underrated.
Other cool game music to consider:
Kirby's Air Ride (Its just lit)
Shadow of the Colossus (There are some cool transitions in the boss fights when you engage the Colossi)
I don't think you've done Super Mario Galaxy (or odyssey) but those seem like they have a bit to unpack
I wish you talked about Boggly Woods' area theme too, those 4ths got me screaming
6:40 - 7:20
Just noting that time interval because it's fucking beautiful
Dude, I still hum the nighty night mario tune before I go to bed every single night. it ends my day and gives me a sense the day is over
