As a Californian that moved to Texas, one of the first observations I made was that you could count more Texas flags displayed in Texas in a DAY than you would count California flags displayed in California in a month. Just drive around any city in California for an hour and count the displayed state flags; then drive around any city in Texas and count the displayed state flags. No comparison.

The homeless epidemic, the rude people, the Subaru and Prius drivers and our politicians. Visiting Charleston, I was in awe of a supposedly poor state having so few homeless. On the other I have found southern California people to be alert and aware.i think alot of people are getting California's mixed up with Hollywood. Southern Calfornia is too big to be corrupt. (There is corrupt people but lets say Orange County has about three or four courthouses and jails
Now I would say either move to a extra large city or a small town. Denver to me is I in the middle actually quite small compared to California a city the size of Denver I stay away from. They are just small enough for corruption. to set in at or near the top. Every biz knows the other biz, etc.
      small town a few thousand
people (check the crime rate) there should be very little to none except some domestic violence. Word of mouth is good. Normally if your going to move to a small tow.

As someone who was born in Kentucky, I have to agree with putting it on this list. I love my home state and I think most people from here understand the downsides to being here.
The Eastern part has the beauty of the Appalachian mountains similar to WV that cascade down to rolling hills across the rest of the state.
There’s a lot of rich culture from horse racing, to college sports (which, personally, I disdain), to bourbon, coal mining, etc.
And despite people’s perception of the state, the people of KY (similar to WV) work very hard for what they have and are very proud of who they are.

It's just the coast that's built up. I have traveled everywhere in the State from San Diego to Redding and it is an amazing State despite what people say about the forest fires (which have been really bad). So I still love California and I don't care if people move to Arizona and Texas. Fine with me. 80% of the population lives East of the Mississippi River. So we've got some wild, wide-open spaces in northern California. Mt. Shasta is just down the road from me.

Gooood evening Briggs! I'm a lifelong resident of West Virginia. And I'm chiming in to tell ya that the electric bill(especially during the Winter), are NOT dirt cheap. Actually quite expensive. Appalachian Power tacked on a cost recovery fee from storms we had YEARS ago. No telling how much they've made from that.
Also, the moment you cross over into Virginia, gasoline is
.25 to .40 cents cheaper per gallon.
We also have that pesky personal property taxes we pay on everything from vehicles to ATV'S, even sheep and goats are on the ticket. Not kidding, check it if you don't believe me.

Yeah, y'all often get colder in the winter than most of the West. I used to live in San Diego (now Seattle). I once went to New Orleans in the winter (I know it's not in GA, but doesn't it have a similar climate to South GA?) and was surprised at how cold it was, especially at night. Plus I noticed they have those "bridge freezes before road" signs; in CA you only see similar signs in the mountains or far north. In San Diego (which is at about the latitude of Macon), they occasionally get frost in the winter but not full-on icing.

Wow. I've lived in four of these: KY, TN, GA, IN. For Georgia, you're on target. Atlanta was cool in my 20s but tried my patience by my late 30s. Weather is great, if you don't mind hot weather, which I do not. Traffic is bad. People are pretty laid back in most areas. As for Indiana, agreed. It's a great place to raise your kids. Indy is a bigger minor city if that makes sense but there is a lot of crime and there really isn't much to do that other cities don't have. Spring, Fall, and Summer are great but Winter sucks-cold and gloomy for about four months. The weird thing in Indiana is that it seems like people are on the defensive from the "get-go." Very little sense of humor and people are quick to confront you if the believe for a nano-second that you may be getting ahead of them. Example, they won't let you in to exit from the highway....they speed up to stop you. TN is similar to Kentucky, except it's Volunteers football instead of KY basketball. TN was ok but it seemed disorganized and the schools sucked. That was high school in the 80s for me at least. Kentucky was pretty but economically depressed and not many job opportunities in certain parts of the state. Good video!

I'm in the middle, there's definitely things I dislike but that's everywhere and I'm fine with my state as it does have alot to offer. It also depends where in the state you live I guess as well. And yes, Jersey Shore is a total embarrassment and wish we were not associated with it at all, lol.

I lost count on how many people from other parts of the country would ask me if I watched the jersey shore once they found out I was from Jersey. Only thing I miss about Jersey is not having to pump my own gas (husband does that now since I'm still clueless and have no interest in learning), the pizza and the diners.
Also think it's funny that so many people think NJ is either the shore or the city, and it's neither and yet it's both. Depends on what part of the state you live in. I lived in north west part of Passaic county. so I was neither.

It's really the best of everything depending on your liking within a relatively short distance. The only downsides for me are obviously property taxes and high cost of everything, and definitely winters because I hate the cold. Other than that I really don't have that many more major complaints. I'm sure if I lived in certain cities or northern areas it might be a different story though...

Didn't mind the winter too much, but I'm one of those nut cases that goes out in the snow with no shoes and in shorts. And yes, it's definitely warmer down here, aka OMG I've entered the gates of hell, but we have central AC in the house, so that helps.
My house in Jersey is one of the cheapest re property taxes (8k a year whereas a lot of my neighbors are at 10 to 12k), and I guess when you compare it to towns closer to NYC that I'm on the low side. Down where I am now, my current property taxes is 1k a year on a much bigger yard.
The fun part about meeting people from other parts of Jersey is, we can start an argument with 2 words. Taylor Ham :D we can also always find where we are in the state by going to a diner, and looking these same 2 words in the menu

If I disassemble my car I MAY be able to fit most of it in the shed I have. he paid about 1,500 a year. I then compared his house to the one my former mother in law owns. same size house, but hers has a yard you can fit about 3 cars. She pays 13k a year in taxes.
One thing I did have to teach hubby was how to speak Jersian. so here's how a typical conversation went at first:

      Him: how did you know

Bet when you say you're going to the city, you're referring to Philly, Not Manhattan. And yes, I knew you'd say pork roll :D After all that's how we determine who lives in south Jersey
At the risk of turning this into a small book, my husband learned the hard way never to ask the best way to get to the city. we gave him a 5 minute speech on the many choices. I love Georgia. I settled here after living all over the world. It has a dynamic and growing economy, a nice balance between rural and urban living, a decent climate and is close to a lot of great stuff.
Atlanta is the Capitol of the South. With the world's busiest airport, three highways and a ton of rail lines, it lives up to its former name; Terminus. It's said that when you die, you'll have a layover in Atlanta on your way to heaven and hell. All this travel means Atlanta has a lot of money moving through it. The third busiest port in the US is over in Savanah, which adds to the goods and people wandering though the state. So again, there's money to be had here. Manufacturers that used to be staples of the Rust Belt are settling in Georgia. Tech is booming because of this. Georgia is a great place to be if you're an entrepreneur.
Georgia has history like very few other states. It's a founding colony. It has some of the oldest remains of prehistoric man with the Indian Mounds. It was explored by the early Conquistadors. It was named after King George. Key Revolutionary War battles were fought here. The first American gold rush happened here. Sherman’s March to the Sea and a ton of Civil War history happened here. The Civil Rights movement, Antebellum south, Jim Crow, Jimmy Carter, FDR and such more happened here.
Our cities and towns are beautiful. Savanah is featured in a number of books. It's like New Orleans, minus the stench of piss and vomit and less opportunities to be robbed. Cities with much of their original buildings still in tact and in use as well as the Atlanta metro region. I personally love the towns around the Appalachian area the most, but those swamp towns down south are great too.
Georgia is a nature lovers paradise. We have exceptional beaches along the Atlantic coast. We have the Okafanokee and Big Cyprus Swamps. The beginning of the Appalachian Trail, huge gorges and massive water falls like Tallulah Gorge. White water on the Okoi River and the Chattahoochee. Fall foliage change is on par with anyplace else in America. Exceptional hunting and fishing, and some of the best camping in America. We have 3.5 seasons!
We are close to stuff. Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and both Carolinas share a border with Georgia. This means skiing and tropical paradises are equally accessible. The Gulf Shore Islands and beaches along the North Coast (Red Neck Riviera) are all right there. Skiing in North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Alabama (yes, is said Alabama, look it up) are all less than a days drive. Chattanooga, Charlotte, Charleston, Jacksonville, Tampa and Orlando are all within a days drive or less as well. Really, if you start in Atlanta, and draw a ring at 300 miles, you have access to a lot of the East side of America. The other three states can't compare in this respect.
Georgia is pretty cheap. Florida has a slightly lower cost of living, but you sacrifice for it. Arizona and Texas are on par. But Georgia has better roads, there are a few months in spring and fall when the AC isn't running. There are rarely droughts. And with the exception of the Atlantic coast, no hurricanes. You get good bang for your buck, and it's a little easier to travel because of reasons mentioned earlier.
Georgia has great food. Our Bar-B-Q is the best. It's a nice hybrid of thr Carolina style thin and Tennessee thick. But, it leans a little Texan in slow smoking style. Georgia is vastly under rated in terms of Bar-B-Q. We also have excellent sea food. We've borrowed from South Carolina and Florida when it comes to how we do things. Bakes and boils are both common. We added Brunswick stew to the mess, sweetened up the tea and added muscadine wine and peach cobbler to the menu. And we have some damn fine alcoholic beverages brewed, vinted and distilled.
Georgia has a high caliber arts scene. It's the hone to some of country music's biggest acts. We have a specific alt-rock vibe best shown by REM and The B-52s. Hip Hop and rap legends like Ludacris and Outcast call Georgia home. Black artists and writers seem to almost exclusively settle here. We are the new Hollywood with tons of television and movie productions coming out of the state.
We are the home of College Football. Alabama plays games in Atlanta. We usually have a team.or two in the hunt for the National Championship. The SEC championship is routinely played in Atlanta. We also have professional sports. The NBA, NFL MLB and MLS all have teams in Atlanta. We have some of the world's best golf courses (Augusta National), we hosted an Olympics. We routinely host Super Bowls (53 will be here). Whitewater, rock climbing, mountain and road biking, SCUBA diving, and just about any other sport you can think of that happens out doors can be played year round.
Finally, the people. Southern charm and hospitality are alive and well down here. Beautiful southern accents that breeze through your ears speak in a genuinely delighted tones saying the nicest things. They will help you. They will not judge you. You can be anyone from anywhere who is anything in Georgia. The three most commonly spoken languages in Georgia are English, Spanish and Korean. Korean. It is one of thr few places in the world, much less the US, where black people are just as affluent as white people. It's a place where Republicans and Democrats still get along. Odds are your heart will be blessed a time or two. What better way to be insulted?

I actually haven't been through ATL Airport yet, but I have passed through its northern rival ORD (Chicago O'Hare) quite a lot. I've heard some surveys claiming Illinois is the state with the least state pride; maybe Briggs will do that one next.
