  • So I've really been wanting to experiment with aquaponic systems and start growing my own fresh vegetables and herbs along with fish. I plan to expand into more involved and larger systems in the future, but I thought it best to start small. I'm a novice at this, so I'm sure I'll make plenty of mistakes along the way, but I want to learn and figure this out.

    Hi! I see that it's been 4 years since you posted this video. Just wanted to say thanks! The styrofoam idea was very helpful. I thought the effort made for your aquaponics tank was admirable. Yes, you did not know everything about everything. The important part was you most likely learnt some things by doing. Sometimes the best way to learn is trial and error. I'm going to take your idea and adapt it for my fish tank. I will likely have to experiment to get an efficient setup. I look forward to the process. Thanks again!

    My cousin did almost the same thing only he used the small round terracotta pots. At first he was afraid the pots would fall apart but they actually held up. Less plastic around your food supply (if growing food) the better. He’s starting another tank but this time he’s using glass bottles with holes for better water/nutrient circulation. 👍🏼👍🏼⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    An easier way to sprout avocado seeds, I've found, is putting them in a compost bin a few inches down from the surface. Those are the only ones I've been able to seed, and honestly they were accidental grows because it was a compost bin. From that same bin I got broccoli and squash. They all just started growing on their own.

    I like that! That’s a great idea.I never thought of the heat gun to heat the can to melt the foam turns out so nice looking eliminating the jagged edges.i do use solo cups when planting seeds in the spring and generally one big pack last me several years of reusing and I found if you have a long sharp/new drill bit like 1/8 or 1/4 you can leave them solo cups all together in the stack just like they come in the bags and drill them all at once and cracking rarely happens unless I rush during drilling it’s much faster than doing them individually,I use to do them one at a time and me planting lots of seeds every year I had figure out a better way lol
    I can’t wait to try exactly what you did on this video-awesome job! 👍

      It doesn’t work. You can’t just DIY with living animals, they have specific care requirements and can’t live like this. They will starve or get sick. This isn’t enough space for goldfish. You need to do a lot of research before getting any animal.

    I used a ten gallon aquarium with a bell syphon to a grow bed using flagstone which is pH neutral. I never have to clean my fish tank because of the ebb and flow of the aquarium water in the grow bed. I would anticipate alot of solid fish waste accumulation in your aquarium. I don't have any stones in the aquarium which allows the pump to suck up all the fish waste. I found that more than 2 fish in an aquarium that size will create a high amonia environment thus killing off your fish unless you change the water frequently which is alot of extra work.

      If you put an aquatic plant in the tank, it will take in the ammonia and nitrogen and you never will have to change the water. Although there was a ton of poop hidden at the bottom, I didn't change my tank water for nearly a year with no fish dying, I had to add water occasionally due to evaporation but that all.

    This is good first try for experimenting and if you planned to do this seriously I would suggest some research on the whole subject as is this is unsustainable. Fish and plants are a bit more complicated than this system can support. Learn how the plants and fish transfer and cycle. This is close but not complete. Good luck on your journey!

    With the floating raft maybe use a pan of sorts that you can poke very small holes in the bottom than fill that with pumas rocks. The pumas will filter the water and you dint have to put it in the tank as you can pump the tank water up. This way it is a super efficient and self sustaining system for the tank and water.

    If you put a small pump in there that pumps the fish waste out into another container filled with lava rocks and sponges then have it flow back in at the opposite end of the tank your plants and your fish will do a lot better oh and put your air bubblers above the pump it will create a poll that brings all the fish waste to the pump... I have three set up and I use that method is working out great also I do not put gravel so the fish waste will flow across the bottom a lot easier

    Bubbling DOESN'T REMOVE chloramine, it only removes chlorine. Many many water companies use both chemicals, so if you are going to try to bubble out any chemicals then you should call your water company and ask if they add chloramine.

    • @MRTN13
      @MRTN13 7 років тому +2

      It also removes the oxygen from the water, which may choke the fish eventually. Basic rule: too much water movement = more gas release.

    • @nobrainsnoheadache2434
      @nobrainsnoheadache2434 6 років тому +1

      chlorine dissipates naturally fairly quickly, the easiest low tech way to make it go away is slosh water back and forth between twp buckets a dozen times, chloramine lasts much longer and is widely used in North America, the safest and most effective way to get rid of it is with a water conditioner, it works instantly and is safe for your fish. Where I live the water the water can actually turn green in the spring, and it can smell heavily of chlorine, it's also very hard so water conditioner is pretty much a no brainer

    If you're gonna stick with the goldfish make sure they have 10 gallons per. Goldfish have crazy amonia and get about a 6-12inches long. It doesn't have to be an aquarium you could buy a large Tote or livestock watering trough. Super inexpensive. Costs like 40$ max and would make the fish a lot happier.

    Good simple setup but it has issues.
    The fish choice was not ideal. Try white cloud minnows or maybe guppies. Hopefully thats a Bristlenose Pleco, if so he should be fine but they need extra food as the algae in the tank will never be enough for him. I think thats more work than its worth and the goldfish grow far too big for a small tank like that.
    I would have also left the top more open as the water won't have enough surface area with the polystyrene the way it is. Why not use some Acrylic and have it as a lid on the tank with the 3" hole for the cups? You also need a better filtration system as the detritus will build up and the pleco needs some driftwood.

      Dr. Arun S Son my fish did fine with the plants that I added. Try and choose a type of fish that doesn't eat the roots of your plants. I will say the plants I started as seeds or Sprouts in the system did better than the fully established plants that were transplanted from soil. Throwing some what mature plants into a system that is brand new you kind of deprived the mature plants from adequate nutrients at first. Small plants starting as Sprouts or seeds don't require that much nutrients and can grow with the fish. That's just some advice from my experience so far.

    Idea is good. But some improvement may be needed. Plants can only take the inorganic material through the roots. The aquarium tank will need microorganism to decompose the fish waste before the plants to take up. The fish need the gentle flow current rather than in the constant bubbling condition.

    Plants will absorb fish waste, but it must be converted into nitrates by bacteria. This tanks needs a filter for the bacteria to grow on which converts ammonia to nitrites, then to nitrates. It also should be set up without fish for at least a week or two before fish are added to grow the bacteria and prevent toxic ammonia buildup

      invented aquaponics
      try Proutklarton Surviving Instruction Plan ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got great success with it.

    I don't know much about aquaponics, but the tank looks a little too small for those fish. Goldfish can live for about 15 years, and small tanks might stunt their growths.
    I recommend a betta or maybe guppies.

    Root rot if there is no water cycle? You need a siphon?
    Looks pretty close though to me does it work well or high maintenance? This is more of a hybrid hydro/aquaponics because you are adding some chemicals/ minerals?

    Hi I have a very important question I’ve been looking all over the internet for. I am going to start my own aquaponics cannabis grow. Can I put pond care or a water purifier into my water without damaging my plant?

      You can and you should. Bubbling water or letting it sit does get rid of chlorine but not chloramines.

    You have to de chlorinate the water with a dechlorinater just using bubbles will do nothing

    You people act like there aren't thousands of fish at Walmart and Petco that are going to be thrown into the garbage this morning. Get over yourselves. The point of aquaponics is the fish clean the water and consumer the flakes tht come off from the roots of these plants. It's a perfectly adequate amount of food and is nearly identical to he fish food you would feed them at the store. Animal rights is a good thing, but this is a fucking fish that they literally sell on store shelves at Walmart. It's not a puppy or a cat. They stuff 20,000 chickens into a crowded room and McDonald's and KFC execute literally millions of them every day. Shut the hell up and let him do his experiment.

      How do the fish "clean" the water, exactly? Seems to me there's a fundamental assumption in error, here . . . the fish dirty the water, my friend, by excreting waste in to it, the same kinds you have. Of course, this will never "clean" anything. The plants, on the other hand, actually do clean the water, by removing nitrates and other waste from the water so they can grow better. They do not, however. have flakes coming off them that the dish eat. They're roots, bruh. Not fish food, no flakes here. The fish need a nice clean environment with regular water changes (and food, and plants/rocks/wood to hide in), and they can't clean the water, that's your job. And yes, it is a puppy or a cat - it's a living thing and deserves your respect - fish are beautiful and an aquarium can bring peace and relaxation, we're all God's creatures, none better than any other :)

      The fish release various chemicals, which can be broken up by protozoa and bacteria into other chemicals which are essential to plants. Also the aquaponics is primary a fish system, the concept was designed to function as fish farms (for edible fish) without waste being poured into oceans and lakes.

    Get some plants or something inside the tank so that the fish feel safer. The better those fish are cared for, the more they will eat and help your plants. A little bit of driftwood should be in there too because the plecostomus needs to rasp on it for fiber.

    I’ve kept fish for years and instead if having a regular goldfish pond I was going to make a aquaponics System. Mine would be a lot larger then is but similar design. But my fish would have filtration and I’m looking at something about 700 gallons. The only thing I need to figure out is how I’m going to keep the fish away from the roots because they will munch on them

    • @fabjanee
      @fabjanee 4 роки тому

      Lillian Beck yes. They do. Mine is in a pond with bigger koi fish. They surely get my plant’s roots done in few days. I still don’t know what to do hhaha

    Nice job. Does the tank need a filter. Or maybe the plants filter it? Just curious if it's better or worse or not even needed

    Don't u have to worry about algae growth as sunlight can pass through glass plus are you gonna add nutrients for plants

    • @jedirebel9735
      @jedirebel9735 4 роки тому

      The fish are what give the plants nutrients. As far as algae growth, you could get aquarium snails. They work the absolute best and keep my tanks clean. Nerite snails don't eat the aquarium plants, so I doubt they'd eat these either

    What kind of substrate you use for the plants

  • @Marvinthecoinhunter
    @Marvinthecoinhunter 7 років тому +1

    Might work at the start but overtime the roots will be exposed to the fish solids. Without a filter the junk sort of sticks to the roots and kills plants

    • @wfrederick2501
      @wfrederick2501  7 років тому

      Yes we live and learn. Whether it was this or the goldfish eating roots some plants did not do well or at least did well for a couple of months and then not so much. I think the roots being eaten was not helping once they started growing beyond the cups. I am sold on the need for filtration. I made a simple bottle filter to clean the tank after 6 months of just letting it go and only adding water to replace evaporation.

    remove those pebble and remove one of those bubbles. you are putting gold fish and pleco which are known for pooping a lot it would cause amonia spike to your fish since you dont have any filtration system that would break amonia to nitrates

    There are many factors in learning home aquaponics. One place I discovered that succeeds in merging these is the Keiths Ponics Site (google it if you're interested) definately the best course that I have ever seen. Check out this amazing resource.

    I believe that works just fine! Yes please do an update on your project. Would like to see the progress! Btw you don't need the toothpicks if you have gravel on the avocado! The reason why people use toothpicks bcuz they use just water instead of gravel. and toothpicks helps it not sink into the bottom. but being you got gravel which supporting it above the water. So you no longer need it anymore!

    • @wfrederick2501
      @wfrederick2501  7 років тому +1

      WuPiDu the reason I use the toothpicks and the avocados was because they were initially started just suspended in a cup of water and then I added the clay Pebbles around them after transferring them to one of my homemade net pots. I just left the toothpicks in.

    If you are trying to go for a heat tolerant fish, gold fish are not the way to go, they need cooler waters. You could go with guppies or platies. They are small and most live bears produce a lot of waste...
